NHS Raises Money for Local Families
The National Honor Society held a dodge
ball tournament on November 19-21. The
tournament took place during homeroom
periods. Teams had to pay $1.00 per member to play. Students could pay .50 to
watch. Students contributed $122.00 over
the three day period. This money was given to two RHS families to help buy food
over the Thanksgiving Holiday. Thanks to
all who participated.
Samantha Woodard Named Teacher of the Month
Rockville Junior-Senior High School's
Teacher of the Month for December is Mrs.
Samantha Woodard. Mrs. Woodard is a language arts teacher at Rockville. She is married to Nathan (8 years), and her children
include Nate (5) in kindergarten and Amelia
(3) in preschool. Mrs. Woodard is a homegrown product as she graduated from Rockville in 1997.
Mrs. Woodard attended St. Mary-of-theWoods College for her freshman year, then
transferred to Indiana State University
where she graduated in December of
2001. While in college, she won several
English scholarships within the department
at ISU.
Mrs. Woodard credits former Rox teachers
Mr. Cowan and Mrs. Lohrmann for her love
of language arts along with current teacher
Mr. Kyle for his love of Shakespeare! Her
favorite class to teach is AP Literature and
Composition because she has the most freedom to be creative.
Not only is Mrs. Woodard a valued member
of the RHS family, but she is also a part of
the state-wide committee that oversees the
English ECA test for sophomores. She has
served as both a grading quality control
chair, making sure that all ECA writings are
graded in a fair and consistent manner
across the state, and as question bank monitor, checking for appropriateness and editing wording as needed to clarify questions
and answers on the actual test given to students state-wide. She has also served in
those same roles in the past with the ISTEP
test for grade 8.
Samantha's hopes for the future are to add to
her teaching license so she can try out teaching some new classes at some point. Long
term plans may include possibly getting into
school administration before retiring in Italy.
Ironically every school where Mrs. Woodard
attended or taught has had a strange mascot
including the following: Rox, Pomeroys, Sycamores, and Sparkplugs. She also started her
first teaching job before she even graduated
from college. Her favorite pastime includes a
"slight" obsession with college basketball.
March is a wonderful month for her!
Principal Mahurin stated, "Rockville is incredible fortunate to have a teacher of the
caliber of Samantha Woodard. Winning this
award is a no-brainer for her. She's just very,
very good for our kids."

Volleyball Season Wrap-Up
The 2013 Lady Rox volleyball team finished the
season with an overall record of 12-20, losing in
the Sectional semi-finals to Lafayette Central
Catholic, who will be playing in the 1A State Finals for the fourth time in the past 7 years. Both
the Varsity and JV teams won the Banks of the

The Lady Rox will lose just one senior to graduation--DonaMarie Kelley, who led the team in
blocks the past 2 seasons and was selected AllWRC this year and was Honorable Mention as a
Junior. With a plethora of returning talent and
experience (including 2013 All-WRC Meagan
White and Honorable Mention Matty Tinkle), the
2014 Lady Rox should not only improve on their
2013 campaign, but are poised to compete for a
conference championship and make a deep
playoff run.
Field Trip to Indianapolis Museum of Art
On November 14th, Rockville Jr. Sr. High School art
students spent the day at
the Indianapolis Museum
of Art. Twelve students

Henri Matisse. Students were led through
the paintings and sculptures created by Matisse by a docent who described his life and
work. Students have been learning about
different artists, one of whom was Matisse.
Students commented that seeing his work
in person was so inspiring and brought the
artist to life.
Students who participated were: McKayla
Billings, Meghan Bullington, Brandon
Cooper, Sam Donahue, Bailey Hayes, Zabrina Hinkle, Anna Lee, Trinity McFall,
Reagan Ruark, Tatjana Schroeder, John
