2013 Fall Season Program/Newsletter
The 2013/2014 North Bay Film season marks 23 years that the Club has been operating in
North Bay. Thanks to all of you who have continued to support North Bay Film over the
years.
This year marks another transitional year for the Club, with the departure of Derek Serafini
and Beth Pentney, two of the key administrators of the Club over the last few years. Dan
Boulanger and Rob Ogleston, both recent administrators with the Club, have stepped up to
run the club this season with the aid of several new volunteers – Lieann Koivukoski, Ursula
Larsh and Kristin Lucas.
As always, our films will continue to screen in theatre 7 at Galaxy Cinemas at 7:30, starting
on September 25th. We can’t wait to see you there!
Derek and Beth’s Departure
Derek and I have had the great pleasure of being a part of north bay film for the last three
years as administrators. We are on our way east, to Nova Scotia in the fall. We wanted to
say goodbye to all the members and patrons of north bay film, and our thanks for being a
committed and enthusiastic crowd. You have made it a joy to be a part of such a strong
community of film lovers. To carry on the tradition that Tom and Claire began when they
retired the club to us, in establishing north bay film awards at both Nipissing and Canadore,
Derek and I have chosen to make charitable donations to two local charities on behalf of
north bay film. One thousand dollars will be donated to the Amelia Rising Sexual Assault
Centre and also to The Alzheimer's Society of North Bay. All the best in the years to come
and thanks to those dedicated volunteers who are carrying on the work of the club. – Beth
Pentney.
Fall Season – 2013
September 25th – Before Midnight
This critically acclaimed finale to the 20 year
trilogy will be an excellent start to the
season.
The film is co-written by both of the lead
actors, who have gotten to know their
characters incredibly well over the years.
The 2nd film of the trilogy – Before Sunset
– was one of the last films shown by Tom
Hanrahan and Claire Powers in their last
season of running north bay film.
October 17th – 7 pm - Macbeth
Please note: Our 2nd date is not a film, but a
theatre broadcast of Macbeth hosted by
Galaxy cinemas – which starts a 7pm.
October 23rd –Much Ado
About Nothing
To continue with the ‘Shakespeare’ Theme
for October, we will be featuring this black
and white adaptation by Joss Whedon.
It is sure to surprise and entertain, and
should be a fun event close to Hallow ‘een
and to celebrate our Shakespearian
theme.
Films & Events
October 30th – Fruitvale Station
The purportedly true story of Oscar Grant III, a
22-year-old Bay Area resident, who crosses paths
with friends, enemies, family, and strangers on
the last day of 2008.
This critically acclaimed film has some particularly
resonant themes, with the recent shooting of
Sammy Yatim this summer by a police officer in
Toronto.
November 13th – Blue Jasmine
To close our fall season, we will feature the
newest film by Woody Allen, who returns to
American shores, to critical acclaim, with his
latest film, Blue Jasmine.
Several of Allen’s films have been brought by
north bay film in the past, including Midnight in
Paris, and Whatever Works.
Blue Jasmine follows a high-society New York
housewife who is forced to deal with the
economic and emotional consequences of her
husband’s crooked financial dealings.
