Issue 10 – Friday 18th November 2016
Dear Parents and Carers,
Our first Open Working Day was a huge success and I’d like to thank everyone who managed
to pop in during the day. The children really enjoy these days and they like to show you
how hard they work at Stanion. I received some lovely comments about the day and I know
you all appreciate the opportunity to come in and see us in action. We operate an open
door policy at Stanion and we look forward to the next day in March. I have already
arranged for the Online Safety advisor for Northamptonshire to visit on this day and talk
with you and the children about the issues concerning this important topic.
Children in Need
The children look wonderful in their pyjamas and we really appreciate you all supporting
this wonderful cause. We will count up all the donations and let you know how much
money we raised next week.
Remembrance Collection
Thank you also for your generosity during the Poppy Appeal. We
were inundated with requests for bracelets, snap bands and stickers.
The Royal British Legion collected all the money and we will let you
know when they tell us how much we raised.

Class News
Kestrel Class continue to think about their five senses. This week we have been thinking
about our sense of hearing, using the story ‘Polar Bear, Polar Bear’ as the basis for our
writing, making lists of the sounds we could hear inside and outside.
In maths we have been comparing lengths and heights and using appropriate mathematical
language to describe our observations. We continue to practice counting forwards and
backwards and thinking of numbers that are one more or one less than a given number.
In phonics this week we have learnt the letter sounds r, j and v. And then sounding out and
blending the sounds to read words. We have also started to use our phonic knowledge in
our writing, listening to the sounds in words and writing them.
For our science this week we made cup phones. The children were surprised at how well
they worked. I hope you’re having fun with them at home.
In RE this week the children listened to the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand. They
then used their knowledge of the story to draw pictures. They have also made prayer flags
to decorate the new prayer space in the library.
Thank you to all the parents/grandparents who were able to join us for Open Working Day.
Kestrel Class would like to invite you all to come and make Christmas decorations with us
on Thursday 15th December. Come for as long as you can at any time during the day. We
look forward to seeing you.
In Literacy this week Falcon Class have been writing our own innovated stories based on the
sandcastle. Lots of the children were able to write their own sentences with punctuation
and different sentence starters. In Maths this week we have been thinking about reasoning
and we had a go at giving silly answers to a range of problems. We also finished off our
work on measurement and went on to think about finding fractions of shapes. We
continued to build our graphs to chart the rainfall throughout the month of November and
practised making simple observations over time. In RE this week we designed a picture for
our stained glass window and our own prayer flags. We thought about making sure that we
had included some of the liturgical colours and discussed their meanings and importance to
us.
This week in Red Kite class, we have been working on telling the time. We have been
generalising rules to help us tell the time using the twelve hour and the twenty four hour
clock. We have also been reading the minutes past and the minutes to the hour. In Literacy,
we have been finishing our Egyptian Cinderella story and using similes and noun phrases to
create interest. In Art, we have begun to investigate the art of Salvador Dali and surrealism.
We have looked at different pieces of work and discussed what our opinion is and what we
think surrealism is. In PE, we have continued our work on making our own dance and we
have been working on our footwork during games. We have enjoyed RE this week, looking
at the parable of Jesus calming the storm and creating some art work to represent this.
In Golden Eagle class this week in Literacy we have finished our planning to write a narrative
story of Rose Blanche and began to write a paragraph describing a scene from the story
using personification and repetition. In Maths we have been converting units of length,
mass and capacity and reading scales converting between measurements and completing
word problems by converting units of measures. Finally on our open day, on Wednesday, we
enjoyed our investigation on finding patterns within Pascal Triangles and there were lots of
interesting mathematical facts to be found. In our science work we have examined how the
moon was formed and identified craters, valleys and seas on the moon’s surface. In our
topic work we have used a ration book to calculate and work out what items of clothing we
could purchase to last through the war. In our RE work we shared and discussed our
puzzling questions that we had about the Gurdwara, the Sikhs place of worship.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend.
Mr Jones
