San Diego Miramar College Marches in
MLK Parade
Classified staff, faculty and students were among the 50
volunteers who took part in the 2015 Martin Luther King,
Jr. Parade on Sunday, January 18 in downtown San Diego.
Our float was a big hit for onlookers as we marched down
Harbor Drive and ended near Sea Port Village. “Under the

leadership of Dean Jacobson, assisted by Ms. Middleton
and the ASC’s engagement, Miramar’s float was a highlight
of the MLK parade,” said President Hsieh. “I would like to
thank those classified staff, faculty, and managers who joined
students to be part of the parade. You all represented
the College well.” Those representing Miramar College
wore shirts with the slogan “Have Things Really Changed?”
They also held up “I Can’t Breath” signs and some walked
wearing hoodies. The San Diego Community College
District took part, along with board members, all 3 colleges
and Continuing Education.
KUSI-TV Visits Campus
A KUSI-TV delegation, led by Sports Director Paul Rudy,
toured Miramar College on January 6. Joining Rudy were
local sales manager Jim Baker and account executive Ed
Freel. The trio was extended a tour led by Brett Bell, vice
president of Business Services and President Hsieh. The
hour long tour featured a visit to the gym to watch the
newly formed men’s volleyball team practice. Miramar
College is exploring ways to build a partnership with
KUSI-TV to better promote the College, our students,
and our mission. The folks from KUSI-TV are longtime San
Diegans who remember what Miramar College looked like
before its recent transformation and they marveled at how
wonderful the campus looks.

January 29 at 2pm. Their first official match will take place
on Saturday, January 31, as part of a tournament at Palomar
College. The first home match is scheduled for Friday,

American Idol auditions a few months back. In addition, on
MLK Day, NBC 7’s Derek Togerson visited campus to shoot
a feature on the men’s volleyball program. Check your
Miramar email for an update on when NBC 7 and CBS 8
plan to run their features.

Classified Staff Development Week
Just prior to the start of the new semester, Miramar College
held Classified Staff Development Week with an emphasis
on health. The Happy Heart Challenge took place on
January 13 and was intended to make Miramar College
one of the first colleges to have all of its employees fully
trained in CPR and AED. Those who attended were taught
how to use the Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
which can be found around campus. On January 14, Terhea
Williams, Miramar College instructional lab technician, led
a discussion on seafood products and their labeling. On
January 15, a four hour health and fitness expo was held
in K-107. Several outside vendors were present to answer
questions on everything from health benefits to personal
training.
