Wilson Middle School celebrates centennial
Alumni invited to join current parents and students marking 100 years
GLENDALE, CA -- Woodrow Wilson Middle School is inviting its alumni and members of the
community to join with current faculty and school families in celebrating 100 years serving Glendale
students, with an Open House on Saturday, October 22, Noon to 3 p.m. The event is free of charge.
The Centennial celebration will include a hot dog BBQ, activities and tours of the present school. The
historical perspective will be presented in “Wilson at 100,” a 17-minute video presentation by local
filmmaker Jeff Blyth. Copies of the “Wilson at 100” DVD, and Wilson Centennial t-shirts, will be
available for sale as well. Videos can be ordered through the school website: www.wilsonknights.org
The school today known as Woodrow Wilson Middle School began in 1911 as the Third Street
Intermediate School, located at the corner of today’s Wilson and Kenwood intersection, the present site
of the Glendale Unified School District Administration building. The school in 1911 had an average
daily attendance of 749 students.
According to “A History of Glendale Public Schools,” by Charles B. Lynch, the Woodrow Wilson
name became attached to the school in 1926, two years after the death of Wilson, the 28th President of
the United States (1913-1921) and 1919 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
“We’re very proud of our legacy, and of the dynamic school we have today,” said Principal Rich Lucas.
“We look forward to sharing our celebration with our community that gives us such great support.”
The present Woodrow Wilson Middle School at 1221 Monterey Road, was built in 1955. In 2011, the
school has an enrolment of 1,359 students.
