Why the Sufficiency Economy
Philosophy is needed to
integrate into curriculums?
The Sufficiency Economy is
an approach to life and
conduct which is applicable at
every level from the individual
through the family and
community to management
and development of the
nation.
All members of the nation –
especially students and people in
educational institutions - need to
develop their commitment to the
importance of knowledge,
integrity, and honesty, and to
conduct their lives with
perseverance, toleration, and
wisdom.
The Sufficiency Economy
Philosophy provides guidance
on appropriate conduct
covering numerous aspects of
life.
Moderation, reasonableness,
and self-immunity as a guiding
principle for decision making.
Mindset that should be nature
since the young age.
The Sufficiency Economy is a
philosophy bestowed by His
Majesty the King to his
subjects through royal
remarks on many occasions
over the past three decades.
His Majesty has been talking about
sufficiency economy since early
1970s.
It is concept that come from his
extensive experience after visiting one
village after another village and see
what works and what does not work.
In 1997, after the crisis, His Majesty
began to use the term “Sufficiency
Economy”.
The philosophy points the way
for recovery that will lead to a
more resilient and sustainable
economy, better able to meet
the challenges arising from
globalization and other
changes.
This applies to conduct
starting from the level of the
families, communities, as well
as the level of nation in
development and
administration so as to
modernize in line with the
forces of globalization.
The Integration of Sufficiency
Economy into the HCU
Curriculums
HCU realizes that knowledge of the
“Sufficiency Economy” is essential for
students.
Therefore, a bachelor course “Life
and Sufficiency Economy” has been
added to all Faculties’ curriculums and
has become an important part of
student development plans.
One of the important aims of
HCU’s educational policies is to
teach students to learn how to
create a good balance in their life,
to learn how to stand on their own
feet with the components of the
Sufficiency Economy: moderation,
reasonableness and self-immunity.
HCU has integrated and
strengthened management
policy by putting the
Sufficiency Economy
Philosophy into all faculties’
curriculums since 2006.
HCU offers academic activities
related to the learning of the
Philosophy of Sufficiency
Economy, including a bachelor
level course (GE1112) Life and
Sufficiency Economy; training
programmes, seminars and public
lectures in Sufficiency Economy;
and public relations and
networking with other institutions.
GE1112 ชีวิตกับเศรษฐกิจพอเพียง 2 (2/2-0-0)
(Life and Sufficiency Economy)
The 2-credit subject “Life and
Sufficiency Economy” is to be
a core course in the General
Education Category of every
Faculty's Curriculum.
All 1st year students have to
study this course as one of the
GE core courses.
The philosophy can be
used as a guiding principle.
Under the Sufficiency
Economy, all things have to
be done in moderation.
Course Objective:
According to the curriculum and
methodology, students are taught:- to realize and understand the
philosophy of the Sufficiency
Economy;
- to apply the philosophy to their life;

- to help students enhance their
resiliency and increase their
immunity;
- to apply the Sufficiency Economy
to agricultural and industrial or
business sectors, as these are also
included in the curriculums;

Movement;
- to be a part of the expansion and the
movement of the philosophy;
- to teach students to create a good
balance in their life, and how to
stand by themselves;

Economy Approach to Sustainable
Development through His Majesty
the King’s Royal projects as well as
the case studies in sufficient
communities, which provide guidance
on appropriate conduct covering
numerous aspects of life.
At the same time, students are
taught to "acquire knowledge to
serve society" (the HCU’s motto),
with the ability to cope
appropriately with critical
challenges arising from extensive
and rapid socioeconomic,
environmental, and cultural
changes in the world.

Students are also introduced the Common
Misconception Concerning S.E.P.
- Sufficiency Economy is about
self-sufficiency
- Sufficiency Economy is anti-globalization
and leads to the closing up of the
economy.
- Sufficiency Economy is only applicable in
agricultural sector and rural areas.
2. Teaching and Learning
Activities / Group Discussions
- Students are assigned to study and
analyze the case studies (from VCDs)
about the Application of Sufficiency
Economy Philosophy.
Teaching and Learning Activities
Students are also introduced to the
Sufficiency Economy Philosophy
through the Royal Projects and Case
studies in sufficient communities or
villages. They will study the application
of the Sufficiency Economy in relation
to the national economy, and the
protection of the natural and
environment.
3. Term Projects
Students are also assigned to do
both individual and group term
projects based on their
understanding and application of
the Sufficiency Economy
Philosophy to their life.
One example of the individual
project is a personal incomes and
expenses account project, a
project in which students arrange a
daily schedule in order to analyze
personal money and time spending
under the Sufficiency Economy
Philosophy.
4. The S.E.P. Movement Projects.
students also undertake the projects
and activities as part of the
Sufficiency Economy Philosophy
Movement, in order to publicize and
cultivate the philosophy among
students on the campus.

HCU offers academic activities

Philosophy of Sufficiency Economy,

Aiming for balance and sustainable

Sufficiency Economy Philosophy.
It’s obvious that people who spend
their lives living with the
Sufficiency Economy
Philosophy will always seek
knowledge, and try to be
honest, faithful, patient,
persistent and have strong
ethics.
This is to train them to be
people with strong principles
who have knowledge, wisdom
