Youth Worker
Liverpool Migrant Resource Centre is seeking to employ a Youth Worker.
The Youth Worker will support newly arrived migrant and refugee young people, building capacity
and promoting positive changes among those who may be facing barriers to settlement and
participation in local life.
This role will be at equivalent SCHADS level 4, with salary sacrifice options available. This role is
to 30 June 2018 with possibility of extension.

Employment Procedure
At the Liverpool Migrant Resource Centre, staff is employed under an Equal Employment
Opportunity policy. All applicants are assessed under the same criteria and via the same process.
An employment subcommittee will convene and follow the following process:
1. Cull the applications according to the identified selection criteria. Applicants will not be
interviewed if they do not meet the essential criteria. Depending on the number and quality
of applicants, the desirable criteria may be considered. In cases of an extremely large
number of applicants meeting the desirable and essential criteria, the panel will select the
applicant who meet the criteria best.
2. Applicant selected will be interviewed. All selected applicants will be asked the same
questions.
3. Depending on the position, each candidate may be asked to participate in a short test
assessing specific criteria (for example–a typing test, writing skills or computer skills).
4. Referees of the best applicant/s will be contacted
5. Employment panel will identify successful candidate and conditions of offer of employment
(i.e. wages, probation period)
6. Convener of the panel will make an offer of employment to the successful candidate, initially
by phone and subsequently in writing
7. Unsuccessful candidates will be informed in writing.
Selection Criteria

Essential criteria
Qualifications in a relevant field such as youth work, community development, community services
or social work; at minimum Cert IV in community services or equivalent.
Demonstrated knowledge, skills and experience in youth work and casework delivery.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with young people, including young people from
diverse language, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Understanding of social and settlement issues affecting refugee and CALD young people and their
families living in South Western Sydney.
Strong administrative, organisational and time management skills.
Demonstrated computer skills alongside skill and experience in utilising electronic databases.
Desirable criteria
Experience in developing, organising and facilitating group based projects and activities.
Experience working with young people who are “at risk” and / or have experienced trauma.
Experience in report writing.
The successful applicant will be subject to having cleared a Working With Children Check and

The Role of the LMRC
The LMRC works with refugees and migrants, including second generations, where their social
conditions render them disadvantaged, and to help them take part in their local community life.
The centre has a strong ethics base and is committed to working to ensure that capacity is built
with individuals, families and communities.
The LMRC works with individual clients by providing direct assistance on problems and
challenges that are barriers to full participation in the local community. The LMRC also assists
community and groups with support, assisting them to build capacity and manage their own
affairs.
The LMRC supports communities by representing their needs to planning bodies, nongovernment organisations (NGOs) and services, though its involvement in networks such as the
Migrant Interagency Network, Families and Children Network and Youth Network, and by
making comment on policies and programs as these affect the LMRC’s constituents.

The LMRC is a community based non-profit organisation established to actively and directly
relieve the situation of immigrants and refugees whose social condition renders them
disadvantaged.

Position Purpose
The Youth Worker’s role is to support recently arrived young people to be able to participate in
the local community. This role will undertake a range of services and activities that support the
organisation’s strategic objectives. The role will be responsible for the day to day implementation
of the organisation’s youth related activities, but will seek strategic direction and advice in the
process of implementing activities. The position will undertake, but is not limited to, the following
activities:
1. Providing information and referral services to recently arrived youth settling in the
Liverpool LGA and its surrounds, including casework services
2. Coordination of a Homework Support service to young people
3. Delivering outreach programs in partnership with other organisations such as local high
schools
4. Supporting projects for recently arrived young people in the Liverpool LGA
5. Supporting the team in identifying and developing complementary services and in
addressing service gaps
6. Undertaking, in conjunction with other team members, other activities consistent to the
strategic plan and as directed.
