September 25 2015 - Staffordshire and Stoke-On

Edition 339
25th September 2015
I was delighted to be able to welcome about 100 staff,
patients, service users and partners to our Annual
General Meeting on Thursday. It was great to see so
many services on display and staff informing our
communities of all the great things we do to keep people
safe and independent at home.
achievement at
Tunstall though
is that they have
delivered
improvements and changes in their own work while
supporting other teams.
We heard a wonderful story of care from our paediatric
Hospital@Home service and were able to screen our
new corporate film. Look out for a full write up and
pictures in next week’s The Word.
David and I were impressed at how integration is
working and the interaction between our health and
social care professionals to ensure we provide the best
outcomes for our service users and were pleased to hear
positive feedback about recruitment processes.
As you all know I have made a personal commitment to
regularly visit staff and teams and I am pleased that our
new interim Chairman David Pearson has been doing the
same this week. It was great to take a call from him
following a visit to three of our community hospitals.
David fed back that his visits to Haywood and Bradwell
Hospitals were very positive and he was impressed with
the staff he spoke to.
In the NHS Five Year Forward View, Simon Stevens, NHS
Chief Executive appeals to staff to lead by example and
this week I met with one of our nurses who is doing
exactly that. She will be embarking on a mission to lose
half her body weight in an attempt to highlight the need
to eat well and benefits being fit and healthy can bring.
Good Luck!
At Cheadle Hospital David acknowledged the “staggering
cleanliness” of the wards and reflected how high morale
was from staff and the ward manager despite the
uncertainty they have faced during recent months while
discussions are ongoing with CCGs and University
Hospital of North Midlands with regards to the step
down model of care.
Finally, this week we have launched a couple of schemes
to support staff in their personal and learning
development. On Tuesday the first cohort of the
Implementing Change – Ideas into Action – began a
programme of learning new service improvement skills.
We look forward to hearing about their progress over
the next six weeks.
I was able to accompany David on a visit with an
integrated health and social care team in Tunstall and it
was evident to see the tremendous work progress staff
have made through strong leadership from their
managers and from their team buddy. The biggest
We have also launched our new coaching network and
there are now 40 qualified coaches across the Trust
willing and able to support staff. If you would like to find
out more please see the intranet.

Confirmation from a Third Party
If you manage nurses or midwives you will need to understand how NMC Revalidation will affect you
Revalidation is the new process by which nurses and midwives will re-register with their
professional body – the NMC. The new process will come in to force from April 2016 and all
nurses and midwives whose registration expires after that time will be required to follow the
new process.
In this new process nurses and midwives will need to obtain ‘3rd party confirmation’ before
they can re-register. The NMC suggest that the best person to act as a 3rd party confirmer is
the person’s line manager and this person does not have to be a NMC registrant.
The 3rd party confirmer is not deciding whether a nurse or midwife will remain revalidated or
will remain on the register; that is the NMC’s role. The 3rd party confirmer is confirming that
the registrant has met the Revalidation requirements:
Practice hours
CPD
Practice feedback
Reflection & discussion
Health & character
Professional indemnity
3rd party confirmers will need to complete the NMC’s documentation as evidence that these
standards have been met and training will be made available to people who may act in this role
in the near future. In the meantime managers should talk to their staff about the process of
Revalidation and make sure they know what they have to do.
Staff who have more than one employer or undertake more than one role, will only need to
obtain one confirmation. They should choose the person who is best able to comment on their
fitness to practice.
If you would like to know more about NMC Revalidation or the 3rd party confirmer role please

Flu Campaign 2015
Flu season is very nearly upon us and you will have hopefully seen that we have now published a range of drop in
session dates where you can get your free flu vaccination.
Drop in sessions will take place across the Trust including Telford, Shropshire and Leicester where we provide
Sexual Health services (dates TBC). All staff are strongly encouraged to get vaccinated, this can be by attending a
drop in session or alternatively by liaising with a Peer Vaccinator, who can come to your base and vaccinate the
team at a suitable time and date. Click here to see a list of Peer Vaccinators.
From feedback in previous years, we’ve now made the consent form which you need to fill in before getting the
vaccination, available in advance – click here. If you’re planning to attend a drop in session please print this out and
fill it in prior to attending. This will speed up the process and make the process of getting all staff protected from
flu much quicker.
We also recognise that some people may decide to get their flu jab at a pharmacy or doctors surgery. This is
absolutely fine. However, please do let us know if you’ve had your vaccination elsewhere so that we can record you
as a Flufighter . Email: [email protected] with your name and date of vaccination so that we can
update our records and tell our patients and service users accurate figures about how many staff are helping to
protect them from catching flu.
Finally, we’ve updated our Flu poster – thank you to our #flufighters Emma, Julie, Lily and Dr Baraboutis. Posters
will be distributed across all bases in the coming weeks.

New video about changes to paying for your care
A new video at www.staffordshirecares.info/deferredpayments is now available to explain how the county council
is proposing to change how it supports people to pay for care.
The council is currently asking the public and professionals to have their say on proposed changes to deferred
payment agreements – a loan to pay for residential care fees that is secured on the value of the person’s home.
The loan is repaid when the home is sold or the person dies.
The council is running a consultation until 30th September on proposed changes, which include extending the
eligibility criteria to people who don’t own their home, and to those who want to go into sheltered
accommodation, rather than residential care.
The council also needs to ensure that the scheme can be sustainable, so is proposing to charge an administration
fee and interest to cover costs.
People don’t like planning for care so most people don’t think about deferred payments in advance. What most
people don’t know is that more and more people need them. The council has a legal duty to enforce a deferred
payment agreement if someone needs to pay for care but does not have any other way except through a loan
against their property. Last year, over 400 people had an agreement.
Professionals and carers are being asked to have their say, and encourage their clients to do so by filling in a short
online questionnaire at www.staffordshirecares.info/careact/deferredpayments or by emailing

IPOPS Away Day
10 members of IPOPS team (Lichfield and Tamworth)
participated in an extra circular team building exercise –
The Wolf Run on 6 September 2015 to help get to know
one another.
The team took part in a gruelling 10km obstacle run with
off road and trail running and plenty of water and thick
mud. Running as a ‘pack’ the team tackled many
manmade and natural obstacles that included mud
jumps, a water slide, an open water swim, hay bales and
cargo nets to name a few. The staff tested their mental
and physical strength, skill and stamina as they ran,
walked, climbed, jumped, waded, crawled and swam
through the course in a time of just over 2 hours.
Steve Nawoor, ESP said “I have only been in IPOPS for
two months and doing the Wolf Run has properly
introduced me to this fantastic team. We all overcame
individual fears and there was so much encouragement
and enthusiasm between us all that getting covered in
so much mud was all part of the fun and camaraderie.”
Paula Deacon, clinical lead for IPOPS said
“This was a great event for the team with staff of all
bands and positions participating. You think you know
your staff but seeing them in a different environment
brings out amazing qualities and personalities you would
never expect. It was the first time many of us had ever
attempted such a feat but we finished on such a high
that we are already looking at the dates for next year’s
events.”
