Wit & Wisdom
“Sometimes our fate resembles a fruit tree in
winter. Who would think that those branches
would turn green again and blossom, but we
hope it, we know it.”
—Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
January 2017
Director’s Note
Happy 2017 to all our wonderful residents, families
and friends of St. Catherine! I wish you health and
happiness in the coming New Year.
This will be an exciting year for us as we continue to
strive to bring new events and services to our great
community. We appreciate all of you who spread the
good news about our community to your family and
friends. We are always looking for new ideas, so what a
great way to start the new year by adding some of your
own! Please feel free to contact me at any time. Cheers
to 2017 and many blessings.

Mark Brainteaser Month
The new year often encourages fitness goals, but
don’t forget about exercising your gray matter. January
is International Brainteaser Month, celebrating those
mind benders that test our logic and thinking skills.
Warm up with this one: A farmer has five haystacks in
one field and four haystacks in another. How many
haystacks would he have if he combined them all in
one field? (Answer: One. If he combines them all, he now
has one big stack!)
Logic Problem
The retirement community recently held a pet show.
All but two of the pets were cats, all but two were dogs,
and all but two were birds. How many of each pet were
at the show?
(Answer: There were three animals at the pet show—one
cat, one dog and one bird.)

Happy New Year!
Bringing Life
to Snow
Adorned with a
corncob pipe and a
button nose, this frosty
friend warmed the soul as
a symbol of our youth.
Some snowman trivia:
• The world’s tallest
snowman was just
over 122 feet tall. It
was constructed in
Bethel, Maine, in
March 2008. It
didn’t completely
melt for four
months.
Humor and Health
January’s winter
doldrums paired with the
post-holiday blues can
start to wear on a person.
Perhaps that’s why
Global Belly Laugh Day is
celebrated each Jan. 24.
What’s so great about
laughter? To begin with,
it’s a great way to bond
with other people while
improving your own
mood. The more you
laugh, the more resilient
you are to negative
events. Laughter is great
for your health, too. It
burns calories and raises
the heart rate, like a mild
workout. A good laugh
also releases tension and
stress and increases your
immunity and
infection-fighting
antibodies.

Resident Spotlight -Martha Weiss - Apt. 317
Martha was born in Ashley Illinois. Her father was a Methodist minister so they moved about every
three years as required of his position. All the moves were in southern Illinois.
She had two brothers, Jimmy and Jerry. Martha was married for a very short period of time and has
no children. She has many nieces and nephews which she is very fond of!
She has worked since graduating from college where she majored in Sociology and minored in
Psychology. Martha worked for McDonnell Aircraft and Boeing for many years. She then went into
business with two partners at the B & K Company. There she was an accountant and prepared taxes.
She still was doing some work this past year and really officially hasn’t retired. She says, “if you don’t
work, you don’t eat!”
She once had a dog but found it too much to take care of him and go to work. Although his name
was Max, much of the time he was called, “No Max!’
Martha has been here for only a month, and she is working on getting everything in one place and
selling her house. She is very proud of herself, because last week she took a written driving test and
passed to get her drivers license renewed!
She enjoyed the Dinner trip to Hendel’s and the ride through Tilles Park to see the Christmas lights.
Martha is very witty and puts smiles on peoples faces.
We wish Martha many happy years at her new home here at St. Catherine. Welcome Martha!
