Algebra Nation Extra Credit Mrs. O`Brien`s Algebra I Honors

Algebra Nation Extra Credit
Mrs. O’Brien’s Algebra I Honors Students
Year 2016-2017
Hello Students and Parents/Guardians:
I am so happy to be teaching Algebra I Honors this year! This is my third year teaching the honors class,
and I continue to modify my classroom procedures and structure year to year in order to accommodate
my students’ needs. At the end of this school year, students will take the Algebra I FSA; if they do not
pass, then they will not get credit for this course. In order to avoid this, I am going to start offering extra
credit through an awesome program called Algebra Nation.
Algebra Nation is a government-funded program through the University of Florida, which means it is
based solely on the Florida-given assessment. I have already requested, and they have provided,
enough workbooks for each of my students. Upon request from students, I am happy to give students
their own copy of this workbook. In this workbook, they can follow along with videos and tutorials,
answering questions with the presenter as they go. Students can work at their own pace, and re-watch
videos as many times as needed.
So how can students get the extra credit? At the end of a section (which will specifically be assigned
depending on the chapter we are currently on or most recently covered), AlgebraNation.com will have
an assessment for that section. If a student takes that assessment and passes with 80% or higher, I will
reward that student with 10% extra credit on the most recently given chapter test. This is a huge boost,
as chapter tests make up half of my students’ overall grades. I do ask that students print something up
as proof that they have taken and passed said assessments.
If a student requests a workbook, I will also give to them a printout from www.AlgebraNation.com that
explains in more detail what the website is, how to log on, and how to access the necessary resources.
This is a work in progress. To try to keep students and parents informed, I will create a category for
“Algebra I Honors – Extra Credit” on my webpage. I will also keep the current extra credit assignment
posted in class for students to refer to on a daily basis. If you have any questions or concerns, do not
hesitate to email me at [email protected]. In a joint effort, we can help our students be
successful this year!
Thank you, and have a wonderful school year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. O’Brien
