PLETCHER ASSAULT CONTINUES
VINERY PURCHASES ALL TOO HARD
Trainer Todd Pletcher=s stranglehold on the 2-year-old
division continued Saturday evening as Black Rock
Thoroughbreds=s Violence (Medaglia d=Oro) handled the
cross-country ship to remain
unbeaten in Betfair Hollywood
Park=s GI CashCall Futurity. The
strapping dark bay, who took
heavy late tote action down to
6-5, finished 1 1/4 lengths clear
of pace-setting Fury Kapcori
(Tiznow). Den=s Legacy

All Too Hard (Aus) (Casino Prince {Aus}--Helsinge
{Aus}, by Desert Sun {GB}), a half-brother to the
brilliant racemare Black Caviar (Aus) (Bel Esprit {Aus}),
has been acquired privately by Vinery Stud, Australia=s
Racing and Sports reports. Carrying the colors of
Nathan Tinkler=s Patinack Farm, All Too Hard captured
the G1 Caulfield Guineas Oct. 13 and just missed by a
neck in the G1 Cox Plate two weeks later. "We have
been negotiating this deal for the past six months as
we always believed All Too Hard was one of the most
exciting stallion prospects we have seen for many
years," Vinery General Manager Peter Orton told Racing
and Sports. AThis horse is the real deal." All Too Hard,
the A$1,025,000 INGEAS sales-topper, will remain in
training with John Hawkes and his sons Michael and
Wayne. AThe current race program is for All Too Hard to
resume racing in Melbourne with the [G2] Australian
Guineas [Mar. 2] as his initial goal before returning to
Sydney for the autumn carnival,@ Orton continued. AIt is
envisaged All Too Hard will follow his famous half
sister Black Caviar's footsteps and race internationally,
further enhancing his appeal as a shuttle stallion to the
Northern Hemisphere.@ Financial details of the sale
weren=t disclosed. AThe final outcome is a real win/win
for both parties,@ Patinack=s Tony Palmer told Racing
and Sports. AWhile it is disappointing to sell All Too
Hard, we have retained an opportunity for him to
service some of our mares and naturally, the more
success he enjoys on the track and in breeding, the
further he will enhance the reputation of his sire,
Patinack=s Casino Prince.@

FEATURE PRESENTATION • GI CASHCALL FUTURITY
No Beating Violence...
One of Todd Pletcher=s 16 winning juvenile firsters at
this year=s Saratoga meet when he took a seven-furlong
special weight by a neck from impressive next-out
winner Titletown Five (Tiznow) Aug. 18, Violence
remained on the bench as his stablemate Shanghai
Bobby (Harlan=s Holiday) locked up the Eclipse Award
with scores in the GI Champagne S. and GI Breeders=
Cup Juvenile. He showed no signs of rust when
resurfacing to take Big A=s one-mile GII Nashua S. by
two lengths Nov. 4, and saw another one of his
teammates in Overanalyze (Dixie Union) take that
venue=s GII Remsen S. a month later. Not to be
upstaged, Violence proved here that two turns, a
change in scenery and a surface switch were of no
consequence.
"
"
"
Well-placed on the rail behind a four-way pace battle
early that went through splits of :22.97 and :46.07,
Violence tipped out into the two path to confront the
emerging Fury Kapcori at the
head of the lane. That foe
responded to his pilot=s urging,
but he couldn=t keep Violence at
bay past midstretch as the
winner lengthened his powerful
stride.
AHe=s a colt that we=ve thought
a lot of all along,@ Pletcher said.
AHe=s a big, leggy colt that we
felt like was going to continue to
improve and mature.@ Of
Violence=s 2-year-old campaign,
Pletcher explained, AWe talked
Owner Steve Marshall and
about a couple of strategies. One
Castellano
Benoit Photo
was to try to make the Breeders=
Cup. The other was a more patient strategy. We
decided to wait on the Nashua and when he ran so well
in the Nashua we started looking whether we wanted
to run him back in 20 days in the Remsen, put him
away for the winter or something else. We decided that
if we were going to run him once more this year, this
race made the most sense. Another factor in deciding
to ship out here is that he=s the kind of horse that has
such a great disposition and good mind that shipping
wouldn=t bother him at all. He=ll probably start again at
the end of February or the beginning of March.@

A consistent Group 3-placed performer for
conditioner Jeremy Noseda in Britain, Grandeur has
shown off an exceptional turn-of-foot since relocating
to the States. Third in Windsor=s G3 Winter Hill S. in
August, the grey made his final start in England a
winning one in a Sept. 21 conditions heat at Newbury.
He got off to a slow start on Breeders= Cup Friday at
Santa Anita Nov. 2, but exploded in the lane to take the
GII Twilight Derby over fellow European shipper
Speaking of Which (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). He was
left with a bit too much to do in the GI Hollywood
Derby Nov. 25, but came home in :22.63--nearly a
second and a half faster than winner Unbridled
Command (Master Command)--to complete the exacta.
Making his first start for locally based Paddy Gallagher
here, Grandeur took up a much closer spot along the
rail in mid-pack early as Optimizer carved out sensible
splits. Traveling well while he waited for room entering
the lane, the sophomore tipped out at the quarter pole
and looked home free. Interaction, the 2009 G1 Gran
Premio Carlos Pellegrini winner, made things interesting
briefly along the rail, but he couldn=t match strides with
the winner late. AI really didn=t do much with him,@
Gallagher said of taking over Grandeur=s training from
Noseda. AI didn=t have to. This was his third graded race
in six weeks. I=m just thankful that the owner [Yvonne
Jacques] left him with me. She lives in Europe and I
believe the plan was to take him back there, depending
on what he did today and eventually run him in Dubai.
I=d sure like to keep him, but he=s going back to Jeremy
Noseda.@

‘GOING’ PLACES
By Diego H. Mitagstein
Brazil arrived to the 2012 G1 Gran Premio Carlos
Pellegrini with a four-horse delegation, and it was the
least likely entrant Going Somewhere (Brz) (Sulamani
{Ire}) getting
the money.
Ridden
without any
doubt by
Nelito Cunha,
the Haras
Phillipson
homebred
rallied strongly
along the
Hipodromo de San Isidro
inside in the
final meters to beat favored local hopeful Indy Point
(Arg) (Indygo Shiner) 1 1/2 lengths. The Pellegrini was
the first graded stakes try for Going Somewhere, who
broke his maiden in a 2400-meter race at Cidade Jardim
Oct. 13 and repeated in a 3000-meter event at the
same track most recently Nov. 17. The performance of
Brazilian horses in the last three versions of the
Pellegrini has been fantastic, with Xin Xu Lin (Brz)
(Wondertross) winning in 2010 and Veraneio (Brz)
(Signal Tap) giving Expressive Halo (Arg) (Halo
Sunshine) all he could handle in 2011. "Some years ago
we came in second with Quari Bravo (Brz) (Punk {Arg}),
and to have achieved this triumph is great happiness for
the whole team," said Benjamin Steinbruch, owner of
Haras Phillipson.

Romans Runners Work at Gulfstream...
A pair of promising soon-to-be 3-year-olds from the
Dale Romans barn stretched their legs at Gulfstream
Park yesterday morning. Mike Rutherford, Michael
Lauffer and Kinsman Stable=s Gulfport (Unbridled=s
Song), coming off a second-straight impressive win at
Churchill Downs Nov. 24, breezed five panels in an
easy 1:02.85. The drill was the 28th-fastest of 31 at
the distance. AHe looked super,@ Romans said of the
$775,000 FTSAUG yearling, a son of MGISW Dream
Supreme (Seeking the Gold) and a half to Grade I
winner Majestic Warrior (A.P. Indy). AHe=s probably
going to run in the [GIII] Holy Bull [S. at Gulfstream
Jan. 26].@
Romans also sent out Dewey Square (Bernardini), last
seen finishing third in the GII Kentucky Jockey Club S.,
to a snappy :59.20 work, good for the second-fastest
five-furlong clocking of the morning. AHe went around
there fast,@ Romans said of the Siena Farms homebred.
AHe=s a good horse. It looks like he=s turned the corner
and is heading in the right direction.@ Romans added
that Dewey Square=s next start is still up in the air.

second appearance--the fourth race at Betfair
Hollywood Park--less than 30 minutes before post time
after scraping her hip leaving the receiving barn. The
half-sister to multiple Grade I winners Zenyatta (Street
Cry {Ire}) and Balance (Thunder Gulch) was 1-9 at the
time of her scratch from the 1 1/16-mile first-level
allowance/optional claiming event for fillies and mares
three years old and up. AShe bruised her hip,@ confirmed
trainer John Shirreffs. AIt=s hard to say [if she=ll miss any
training]. We=ll have to see how she is when she walks
out of the stall [Sunday].@ Eblouissante was a 4 1/4length debut winner Nov. 16 at the same 1 1/16-mile
trip she was scheduled to compete at Saturday.

LONG RIVER (c, 2, A.P. Indy--Round Pond {MGISW,

even debut over a six-furlong trip that was always
going to be too short at Belmont Sept. 15, but
improved immensely with a stretchout to that track=s
one-turn mile Oct. 13, finishing second to Delhomme
(Dixie Union). The form of that race was franked when
Delhomme returned to be a close third in the
GII Remsen S., and Long River was part of the favored
entry here at 1-4. Allowed to sit the box seat for the
opening 3/4 of a mile, the homebred was sent through
an opening at the rail in upper stretch. He looked like he
might run off and hide, but Mr. Palmer (Pulpit), a lastout third to subsequent GSP Frac Daddy (Scat Daddy),
came out past the eighth pole and whittled the winning
margin down to 3/4 of a length. Long River is the first

Mystic Love could have waited and faced her peers in
the Ginger Brew S. on New Year=s Day, but trainer
Jessica Campitelli preferred a flat mile for her first twoturn try and entered her against the boys in the Dania
Beach. The decision paid dividends when the Marylandbred miss got through in the stretch and outfooted
favored Charming Kitten to the money. An impressive
four-length maiden winner sprinting on the Laurel lawn
Sept. 14, the dark bay failed to transfer that form to
the main track and was fifth as the favorite in the
Maryland Million Lassie S.
Oct. 6. She came from next

take the Oct. 27 Selima S.

for this first start beyond
the Maryland border. Third

the paint early, Mystic Love
had Charming Kitten to her
Mystic Love Courtney Heeney outside approaching the

dice and sent his filly through a razor-thin opening at
the fence inside of a weakening Tate=s Landing

clear into the final furlong and was able to hold off a

HAWAAKOM (c, 2, Jazil--Nafisah {Ire} {SW & GSPEng, $112,344}, by Lahib) trailed for the opening halfmile of his Nov. 7 debut at Churchill Downs and passed
a handful of rivals late to finish a distant seventh.
Sheikh Hamdan=s homebred was away in good order
and was a close-up third, but looked to be struggling in
the middle stages and was shuffled back. Called upon
and switched out widest at the quarter pole,
Hawaakom began to find his best stride, engaged
Bemata (Horse Greeley) entering the final furlong and
edged away to take it by 1 1/2 lengths at 36-1. The
winner is a 3/4-brother to Snaafy (Kingmambo), GSWUAE, $554,684. Lifetime Record: 2-1-0-0, $23,635.

MONEY TALKER (c, 3, Silent Name {Jpn}--It Is Private,

Poly Aug. 2, returned to the grass for his last two,
missing by a nose at the Seaside oval Aug. 31 before
graduating from next-out winner Tiznow Or Then
(Tiznow) at Santa Anita Oct. 25. Sixth and nicely
relaxed beneath Rafael Bejarano to the far turn, Money
Talker crept into contention while on the bridle, came
off heels in upper stretch and skipped away to score by

ESCAPE ACT (f, 2, Medaglia d=Oro--Miss Houdini
{GISW, $187,600}, by Belong to Me) opened her
career with a third-place effort over the Santa Anita dirt
Oct. 21, and was most recently fourth over that strip
Nov. 4. Sent off the 4-1 second choice for her turf
debut, Escape Act sprung to the lead from the break,
set moderate fractions while under pressure, and kept
her rivals at bay in the stretch to win by 1 3/4 lengths
over Charm Catcher (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}). The
winner is a half to Papa Clem (Smart Strike), MGSW &

shorter than five-eighths of a mile since late October
and capped his worktab with a stamina-building six

in this bulky field, Hear the Ghost landed in third as the
well-bet firster Let Em Shine (Songandaprayer) set a
strong pace. He moved into second approaching the
lane and gradually reeled in the front-runner to take it
by 3 1/4 lengths at odds of 16-1. Battled (Master

has proved equally adept on synthetic tracks, and
posted his third win from four Tapeta tries, besting
Shudacudawudya (Marino Marini) in a Nov. 18

stretch and was never menaced en route to the victory.

LONGCHAMP PLANS ARE GO
The long-awaited redevelopment of Longchamp has
moved a step closer following the acceptance by Paris=
city council of France Galop=s proposals to extend the
racing authority=s lease of the track until 2056. AFrance
Galop has developed a project in order to recreate a
racecourse more functional, more comfortable, more
welcoming and more green while remaining the
International window to French flat racing,@ commented
Henri de Pracomtal in 2009, when the project was in its
infancy, and that prophecy appears likelier than ever to
be fulfilled. The Conseil Municipal Stand is to be
demolished and replaced by a building capable of
hosting temporary structures during Arc weekend.
There will be reconstructed Presidential and Jockey
Club Stands, a redesigned parade ring and new facilities
for officials and professionals. Access and links will be
improved, and the new structures will house
restaurants and facilities capable of hosting conferences
and events. A new fibersand track will also be laid to
increase the number of race days per year. The cost of
the project, which will be borne by France Galop, has
jumped from an initial estimate of i75 million to i108
million. The renowned Dominique Perrault Architecture
organization has been tasked with the project.
Redevelopment work is set to begin after the 2014 Prix
de l=Arc de Triomphe and will be completed in time to
host the 2016 renewal. Chantilly is considered the
likeliest substitute venue for the 2015 edition, but this
has yet to be confirmed.
