Skeet Journal Event: 2011 Kosco Tippe Targets Location: Kosco Conversation Club - Warsaw, IN volume 9 Tom Pavlack Otsego, Michigan 269.207.1808 888.692.0130 [email protected] Cell Fax Email ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Date: Monday, August 22, 2011 Darcy & the kids (Samantha & Luke) rolled back home last night from a "great-fun" weekend at the Kosco Gun Club. If you didn't know already, there is another remarkable club in Indiana besides the St. Joe Gun Club and it's in Warsaw. This happens to be the home club for our NSSA president - Jim Gast. The club again went "out of its way" to make everyone feel "at home". There has been a new addition since my last visit and that is a sporting clays course...first class - 13 stations - brand new trap machines and an automated target counting system.....I didn't get a chance to shoot it but some of the guys did and they thought it was a "great track" Ok, now let us review the weekend...... We pulled in the club Friday morning to set up the motorhome and the grounds looked spectacular!! Setting up the "homestead" The kids - Luke - the wonder dog and Samantha..... ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ We shot doubles Friday afternoon....and the winner is??? - Dennis Trice - ground out a 99 - a Hoosier but we don't hold that against him....great shooting Dennis!! After all that we got down to some realbusiness - EATING!!! Can you say FISH-FRY - Gary Lowe and Bill Wainscott have been fishing all summer on Lake Erie and they were gracious enough share some of their bounty!! Pretty tasty "vittles" - perch, small mouth bass and walleye thanks guys!! And as good as that was....it was just a "warm-up" for Saturday's dinner....I will get to that a little later... Everyone truly enjoyed the meal!!! Page 2 of 9 ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ There were almost (40) 4-gun shooters. Saturday held the 12 and 20 gauge events and the weather was pretty good...at least when we shot. There was an overcast sky and no wind - PERFECT!! Our squad was again "tough"....I know that I am repeating myself but here I go again..... "You have to beat the guys on our squad if you even think about winning the event" and today was no different ...Bruce Christian and Dave Schiebel both scored 100's in the 12 gauge.... and in the 20 gauge it was Dave Schiebel and Christian Elliot that ran 100's .........these guys are tough!! There was "some rain" in the afternoon, but that didn't stop other shooters from running 100's. There were (4) 100's in the 12 gauge - Bruce Christian ended up the event champ - nice shooting Bruce!! Hi Betty!!! By the way...Betty celebrated a birthday this weekend - Happy Birthday Betty!! Page 3 of 9 This is a very busy page...so pay close ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ attention...my wife is detailed.... PSA Update - AGAIN: Here I go again...being the "public servant". After reviewing the "Shorts Situation" with Denny Meinert, and "NO" he didn't wear shorts at this weekend's event - go figure!!.......this is now officially "Shorty-Gate" and we will get our way. Denny is going to the US Open in Waco Texas and the temperature there has been a 100 + for the last 1000 days or something like that.... he has to wear shorts Even Denny's squad mates are in total dis-believement!! John is locking up the knuckles in that weather - don't thinking "I hope he is drinking lots of water".....and Denny Tanis is wondering....well I'm not "chaa" think??? Now I sure what he is wondering but I'm sure his "core" temperature is cooler than the "other need to enlist the Denny"....are you thinking what I'm thinking...to many Denny's on this squad.. skeet shooting core community and task them to this simple assignment: Approach Denny and ask - "Denny, aren't you hot in those long pants? Wouldn't shorts be cooler? and last (but not least) What would your mother say seeing you dressed like this in this hot weather?" On another note....who is the "cat person"....who uses a "kitty-litter" container to haul shells around??? Doesn't Darcy look "spectacular" in her This is some of the "HUGE-AUDIENCE" that watched the shoot-off's Army shirt...she has a great story to tell regarding how she got it at the World last year ....and she is wearing her newest acquisition (special thanks to Bruce Christian) - a West Point Skeet & Trap hat. Luke - the wonder dog....one of the few moments where he is "sitting" still Page 4 of 9 Now how can it get any better than this?......We were going out for a ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ pontoon ride and the girls (Trish & Bailey is our lookDarcy) decided to "prep" the boat by out.... removing the covers & stuff....nope can't get any better than this!! Doesn't'[everyone use a torch to light the grille?? You are putting on your seat belt - right?? Jim & Diane Gast were kind enough to let us use their boat & Lake cottage.... Page 5 of 9 ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 20 gauge shoot-off-s - 100's - Dave Schiebel was the eventual winner....At this point - Dave & Dennis Trice are both 2 x 2 - not bad for a couple of northern Yankees!! Hey - L.P. check it out...I am wearing one of your hats!! Whatever you do....don't miss at Now...as good as these shoot-off's were and they were great...went lots of stations....the shoot-off's that got the "crowd" heckling, hoot'in & holler'in was the shoot-off's that I was in....yeah, you are reading correctly, I did "stumble" into a couple of shoot-off's. Now my record lately has not been "stellar" in this department and my first shoot-off was against Trish (the crusher) Magyar...which if memory serves me correctly - my lifetime shoot-off record against her is around 1&30+...and I may be exaggerating with the (1) win....well, a sudden hush "erupted" when we approach station #3...and that was kinda weird...but I digress....Trish is first - and she "smokes-em"...(which is skeet slang for "notbad")...well, my job was easy, just break the first one and then the second.....I only accomplished 50% of my task, my lifetime record now....1&31+ station #3....please don't miss.. Ok,Ok, I have a couple more shoot-offs......time for improvement - right?...lost every shoot-off until the last shoot-off of the night...by this time, the crowd is getting FYI - the "other photographer" is "ugly"....it's a concurrent shoot-off with my squad mate the talented and lovely Darcy Bruce Christian who had already put his gun away for the night but asked to shoot with my gun.....boy, that puts me in a bad spot....Bruce could beat me with my OWN GUN!!! So off we went, and it was UGLY, we both broke the pair at station 3 and then Bruce did the unexpected - he missed at station #4....here is my chance...and....missed - the crowd got even UGLIER (if that was even possible)...on to station #5, Bruce misses AGAIN (I know it can't be the gun...has to be the pressure)...here's my chance AGAIN... Page 6 of 9 ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ hearing lots of "CAT CALLS" from the crowd...one in particular from Al Magyar, which was all the motivation that I needed...called for the targets and quess-what???...I did it and broke the pair....I finally won a shoot-off Thanks Al for the Pavlack....you are giving me a "heart"special" support! (If attack" with that performance!! you are wondering what words of wisdom Al relayed, I can't repeat what he said without getting arrested)........... I can't take much more of this.... so let's go eat dinner... I submit this picture to "prove" that I am not exaggerating the fact that we did share my gun for the shoot-off Food Corner Now I have been telling everyone who would read this journal that one of the major reasons for shooting skeet is the food and I have be to lots of skeet events this year....and they have all been wonderful in the food department....HOWEVER, the food at the gun club this weekend has been the best to date...maybe EVER!! Every year that I come down here, the food is great but this year was spectacular!! The dinner menu Saturday night was....are you ready for this??? Two salads (not one but two) - Fresh tomato salad and bok-choy salad (to die for and I don't say that lightly because I am a "meat & potatoes" man) Pulled pork w/barbeque sauce on the side Barbeque chicken Mashed potatoes & gravy Green bean casserole Aaaand the "bestest" and sweetest "corn on the cob" in the "whole world" If you were still hungry, there was homemade cherry & peach cobbler - with vanilla ice cream (of course).....it's was absolutely the most excellent ever!!!! 5 Star Performance!! Thank-you, thank-you ladies for preparing this grand meal!! Page 7 of 9 ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Odds & Ends Jim...please come back....I just want to share my "touchy - feely" thoughts about station 1.... Tommy-Boy....you only missed that target by this much.... Page 8 of 9 ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The "Michigan Boys" getting their "game-faces" on....they look very intimating - don't they?? Skeet Drama Episode What happened on Sunday??? To just let you know, there weren't any pictures of event champ shoot-off's because I left early (my bad - sorry)...however there was an epic shootoff for the 28 gauge and it was between squad mates....the only 100's....and in this corner...shooting for 40+ years, world champion, the master of disaster, Mr. "I love shooting doubles"...AAAL (notice the triple "A" in his name - boy, what a guy!) MAGYAR....and in the other corner...the younger and better looking rising skeet shooter , quick on his feet and even quicker on the skeet field, who parties the night before and still stands (without wobbling) to score 100's the next day......BRENT (the hammer) EDWARDS.......and from what I understand, there was electric anticipation in the air...The Table is Set....the master and young padawon (a little Star Wars lingo)..Sampson vs Hercules...are you getting a visual yet???....and after all this "build-up", it was all over after the first station with Al Magyar prevailing - nice shooting to both of you......this may be all the momentum that Al needs going into the Michigan State shoot this weekend. .410 - a lone 99 and the owner of this score was also the HOA champion (396) - Dennis Trice - nice going Dennis!!! Well....that pretty much wraps it up from Kosco....again it was a great time, next year you should come down to see for yourself "what the fuss is all about". Next event is this weekend....Michgian State Shoot....I look forward to seeing everyone this weekend....drive safely to your next event....P.S. It's also the Indiana State Shoot next weekend and good-luck to my Indiana squad mates - Jim & Bruce!! See ya down the road....Tommy Boy...aka Mr. Clutch in a shoot-off! Page 9 of 9
