NITROGEN.
GROW MORE PASTURE
FOR LONGER.
Nitrogen (N) is the most cost-effective way to fill a feed deficit. With the right
application timing and rates, nitrogen fertiliser can improve both feed quantity
and quality. This delivers feed earlier, builds a feed buffer, extends the growth
period or sets up production for next season.
No single nitrogen product provides all the answers. Ballance Agri-Nutrients has a
range of smart nitrogen options that can be used strategically throughout the
year. With different nutrient ratios, they cater to specific needs to help deliver
profitable and sustainable production.
SustaiN
What is it?
SustaiN is a unique urea fertiliser. The granules are treated with AGROTAIN®
nitrogen stabiliser, a urease inhibitor that reduces nitrogen losses from
ammonia volatilisation.
Nutrient
N 46%
What is the key advantage?
The inclusion of AGROTAIN in SustaiN halves nitrogen losses from volatilisation
(compared with urea) to make more nitrogen available for plant uptake.
What does it do?
• SustaiN mitigates nitrogen losses to increase nitrogen efficiency and provide a
more flexible application schedule. This can help to boost pasture production and
improve crop yields.
Where can it be used?
• As the “go to” nitrogen fertiliser to grow more grass and crop per unit of nitrogen
applied
• Use instead of urea unless 10 mm of rain is guaranteed within 8 hours of
application
• Use if there are less than optimal conditions at time of nitrogen application
• Use where high rates of nitrogen are applied (e.g. when side dressing crops).
When to use
Strategic or regular nitrogen applications throughout the year to improve both feed
quantity and quality.
Application rate (to apply 25-35 kg N/ha)
55-75 kg/ha (same as Nrich Urea).
SustaiN Ammo
What is it?
SustaiN Ammo products contain SustaiN and Sulphate of Ammonia (SOA).
Nutrients
SustaiN Ammo 30N N 29.8%S 13.7%
SustaiN Ammo 36N N 35.4%S 9.0%
What is the key advantage?
Delivers the benefits of AGROTAIN-treated urea while supplying immediately
available sulphur.
What does it do?
• Delivers immediately available sulphur with each application of nitrogen to
support pasture production.
Where can it be used?
• On soils with poor sulphur levels (e.g. pumice and sedimentary soils)
• On soils that experience high rainfall
• Instead of SustaiN in spring if herbage sulphur levels are below 0.3%.
When to use
Use over winter - early spring (July to September).
Application rate (to apply 25-35 kg N/ha)
85-115 kg/ha.
SustaiN K
What is it?
SustaiN K products contain SustaiN and potash (MOP).

SustaiN 20K
SustaiN 25K
N 32.2%K 15%
N 27.6%K 20%
N 23%K 25%
What is the key advantage?
Delivers the benefits of AGROTAIN-treated urea while applying potassium.
What does it do?
• Delivers potassium with each application of nitrogen to boost pasture growth and
promote clover health and vigour.
Where can it be used?
• To provide potassium at the optimal time to support clover growth (summer N and
K applications)
• Hay and silage paddocks after they have been cut to promote recovery
• On sheep and beef farms where soil Quick Test K levels are low
• Useful on soils prone to potassium leaching (e.g. pumice, sands and coarsetextured soils)
• Where capital K requirements are large, requiring additional applications to lift
soil K levels.
When to use
Use over the summer months (November to February).
Application rate (to apply 25-35 kg N/ha)
100 kg/ha.
SustaiN S Boost
What is it?
SustaiN S Boost combines SustaiN and PhaSedN.
Nutrients
N 39.7%S 8.6%
What is the key advantage?
Delivers the benefits of both AGROTAIN-treated urea and fine elemental sulphur.
What does it do?
• Delivers sulphur with each nitrogen application to boost pasture growth and
provide a long-term source of sulphur
• Elemental sulphur is not lost by leaching so it will still be available even if heavy
rain occurs.
Where can it be used?
• Apply where Olsen P levels are adequate, nitrogen is applied regularly and sulphur
levels need to be maintained
• Ideal for high sulphur-leaching regions such as Northland, East Coast and Otago.
When to use
Can be applied all year round.
Application rate (to apply 25-35 kg N/ha)
65-90 kg/ha.
PhaSedN
What is it?
PhaSedN is a granulated combination of elemental sulphur, SustaiN and lime.
Nutrients
N 25.3%S 28.5%Ca 5.7%
What is the key advantage?
A combination of nitrogen and slow releasing sulphur that extends autumn growth
and promotes early spring growth.
What does it do?
• The elemental sulphur remains in the soil over winter and slowly releases to
provide adequate levels in spring when pasture starts growing again
• Elemental sulphur is not lost by leaching so it will still be available even if heavy
rain occurs
• The nitrogen offers an immediate boost and included as SustaiN it reduces the risk
of volatilisation losses of nitrogen.
Where can it be used?
• If there is a high sulphur need such as sandy, peat and pumice soils
• If there is high rainfall and/or a high risk of sulphur leaching
• On dairy farms where phosphate levels are high and no further applications are
required, but sulphur availability needs to be maintained or increased
• On effluent blocks where tactical sulphur and nitrogen is needed
• On hill country where there is good phosphate fertility but applying a combination
of sulphur and nitrogen can be beneficial
• On hill country where organic sulphur levels are low (< 8) and where soils have a
low-medium anion storage capacity (ASC <60).
When to use
PhaSedN is suitable for use in autumn (March-May) to supply nitrogen and sulphur to
grow grass for longer in the season, build pasture covers and set the farm up for spring.
Application rate (to apply 25-35 kg N/ha)
100-130 kg/ha.
PhaSedN Quick Start
What is it?
PhaSedN Quick Start is a granulated combination of elemental sulphur, SustaiN
and lime blended with urea and sulphate of ammonia (SOA).
Nutrients
N 31.5%S 17.1%Ca 2.3%
What is the key advantage?
The delivery of two complementary forms of sulphur to optimise plant growth
throughout the year.
What does it do?
• Supports immediate and long-term pasture growth with both plant-available
sulphur (SOA) and sustained release sulphur (elemental)
• Contains two forms of nitrogen (ammonium and urea) for plant uptake.
Where can it be used?
• Ideal for use following high rainfall where sulphur may have been leached from the
soil
• Ideal for use on effluent blocks where tactical sulphur and nitrogen is needed.
When to use
PhaSedN Quick Start is best used slightly later than PhaSedN, from late autumn through
to the end of winter (May-August).
Application rate (to apply 25-35 kg N/ha)
ONYX 15571
80-110 kg/ha.
The right application timing and rates of nitrogen fertiliser can improve both
feed quantity and quality.
No single nitrogen product can provide this. The answer is a range of options
that can be used throughout the year.
