Power your performance Health benefit solutions Sports nutrition provides the winning edge Competitive athletes have known for years that better nutrition can help them deliver their top performance. In their world, fractional gains make the difference between winning and losing. Today the appreciation for sports nutrition is spreading to a much wider circle of physically active people who exercise for pleasure and health.1 Some compete, some do not; but whether they walk, jog, play golf, swim, cycle or weight train, they have learned that sports nutrition products can benefit them before, during and after exercise. At the same time, the science of sports nutrition is becoming ever more sophisticated, revealing new insights about measurable benefits of nutrients, the amounts needed, and the appropriate timing of intake. Insightful manufacturers will capitalize on these scientific advances and new consumer markets to create their own winning edge with innovative sports nutrition products, providing hydration, refreshment and energy before and during physical activity, as well as providing the nutrients required to support recovery afterwards. Essential minerals are a solid foundation of nutrition for athletes Sports nutrition basics Exercise activates a finely orchestrated interplay of the body’s physiological systems to produce the desired skeletal muscle contractions at the desired time. To do this, the human body needs:10 Water and electrolytes to prevent dehydration and replace essential salts lost in sweat Adequate total energy to fuel the exercise and maintain body weight – Carbohydrates to maintain blood glucose levels and replace muscle glycogen – Fats to provide energy during extended bouts of physical activity and for other physiological functions – Protein to provide amino acids for repairing and building muscle tissue Vitamins and minerals for roles in energy production, hemoglobin synthesis, bone health and muscle strength, immune function, protection against oxidative damage; synthesis, repair and maintenance of lean body mass. During the first few minutes of intense exercise energy is provided primarily by anaerobic metabolism, using up muscle glycogen and glucose that are present and readily available within the skeletal muscles. Anaerobic metabolism can energize a short burst of intense activity, such as weight lifting or sprinting, but not prolonged exercise. After a few minutes oxygen becomes more available to working muscles and aerobic metabolism begins, tapping glycogen reserves from the liver and muscles, triglycerides from body fat and amino acids from several sites. Endurance sports require efficient use of oxygen to generate energy for continuous, extended muscle contractions. Body glycogen stores can support moderate to high intensity activity for 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the nutritional status and fitness of the individual.11 These and other factors determine the relative amounts of energy derived from carbohydrates and fat. With increased training, there is a greater use of fat, a key factor in increasing endurance. As these fuel sources are spent, the intensity, pace and performance of muscular work decline. The body will begin to break down muscle tissue for fuel, with potential undesirable consequences.10 Prudent intake of nutrients before, during and after intense exercise can maintain blood glucose and muscle glycogen stores, improve endurance and performance, spare amino acids for protein synthesis, and optimize recovery after exercise.11 For DSM, quality is a way of life.
