Place Value Styrofoam Cups
The kids I have used these with really enjoy them.
We use them to:
understand place value
practice counting forward and backward
learn the names of large numbers
decompose numbers to expanded form
Supplies:
styrofoam cups - I like 12 oz. without ridges
Sharpie markers - 1 or several colors
small strip of paper - about ½ inch wide and long enough to go around top of cup
ruler or tape measure
1. Wrap strip of paper around top of cup and cut so ends just meet.
2. Unwrap and mark lines on paper to divide into 10 equal sections.
3. Rewrap and transfer markings to a cup, going across width of the rim.
Make dashed lines across halfway between original marks.
This cup is your guide to keep numbers evenly spaced on cups.
Note: If, unlike me, you are very good at eyeballing the distance between numbers,
skip the first 3 steps. ;^)
I like to use a different marker color for each cup, but I have seen these done all in black.
4. Place the guide cup inside another cup. Write 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 clockwise around the rim to
make the ones cup. Continue making cups - tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred
thousands.
