fat loss success story ‘I lost 9 stone’ Nathan Scott used Men’s Fitness and Muay Thai to kick-start his fat loss F our years ago my lifestyle was out of control. I was an office junior in an IT company and sat on my arse all day. I also ate all the wrong things at the wrong times – pizza, BLTs and takeaways, washed down with lager, and I was smoking about 20 cigarettes a day. I constantly had a bad back, achy legs and breathlessness. My doctor told me I was morbidly obese and if I wanted to see my two-week-old daughter start school I needed to change my ways. I walked out shaking, not knowing where to turn. I tried to run off some pounds but my XXXL frame got in the way – the weight was too much for my joints. Disheartened, I walked to the shop and picked up a copy of Men’s Fitness magazine. That day I read the mag and set a date to start my new lifestyle. This was vital – it gave me a chance to get the cravings out of my system and plan my new food and exercise regime. I started with three weights workouts a week, stopped the takeaways and cut out all sweets and alcohol. It wasn’t easy, but each week I allowed myself a treat meal, usually a curry. It was the exercise that was a killer. After my first workout I was gasping for breath and dripping with sweat, and the next morning I ached all over. In the first week I lost 6lb [2.7kg]. This was the boost I needed, and I changed my diet further. I also stuck to a tuna salad for lunch and a stir-fry for dinner. People soon noticed and the compliments came thick and fast, but it wasn’t always easy. There were weeks when the scales didn’t move. I felt I was working so hard but getting nowhere. Instead of giving in, I would shake my routine up with an extra 20-minute jog and set some new goals. When I achieved my first goal of 18 stone, I bought myself a whole new wardrobe. At 16 stone, I felt confident enough to join a local kickboxing club. I was also running for longer without any pain. Running battle At 14 stone, I signed up for the Paris Marathon. I got up before work to run and I carried on with my usual three weights sessions a week and my Muay Thai kickboxing. In Paris I finished in 3hr 46min. It was an emotional day for me and my wife – I had come so far. Keeping fit and eating healthily is now my life. I have run four marathons, with a fastest time of 3hr 21min. I’ve also taken my Muay Thai kickboxing to a new level – I even went to train in Thailand last year. It might sound stupid but finally I am proud to be me. Losing weight and achieving my sporting goals has given me a happier, healthier and – more importantly – longer life.
