Academic Plenary Sessions. st “Ancient / Future Church” The Rev. Dr. Barbara Robinson The 21 century is far from the first time the church has felt under cultural siege. Are there lessons to be learned from the Anglican clerics and laypeople of earlier periods who faced similar challenges? For John Wesley, the strategy for creative renewal was rooted in re-engaging with the spirituality of the ancient church Through this workshop it is hoped that Lay Leaders will: 1. Become familiar with Wesley’s context and story. 2. Understand the distinctive emphasis of Wesley’s theological thought and methodology. 3. Begin to explore the ways in which this missiological tradition continues to influence the contemporary Church The Rev. Barbara is the rector of St. Paul’s in Brockville, she has her doctorate in Church history and taught for several years at Booth College in Winnipeg. She and her husband Malcolm have 3 children and a crazy dog. Both Barbara and Malcolm love music; he plays a mean trumpet and she a mean trombone. Workshop A “An instructed Eucharist” But all things should be done decently and in order 1 Corinthians 14: 40 Bishop Michael Oulton In this workshop participants will learn the ins and outs, the whys and wherefores of our Anglican worship services. We will also learn which liturgical reference books are acceptable in the diocese and which are not. Bishop Michael is the bishop of the diocese of Ontario, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1993 and became the rector of the parish of Alberton in P.E.I. He moved to Kingston in 1997 to become the rector of St. Peter’s In Kingston, in 2004 he became the rector of Christ Church Bellville until inducted as the bishop of the diocese in 2011 He is married to The Rev. Jeanie and they have 3 children. His recreation is playing old timers hockey Workshop B: The Covenant, The Command, The Calling The word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it. Deuteronomy 30:14 Led by the Rev. Linda Faith Chalk This workshop briefly examines God’s Covenant love with his chosen people, the people of Israel, and opens the understanding of this covenant to examine both its old its Old Testament implications and the completion and full and final expression of that covenant revealed in and through the person and work of our Lord and Saviour Jesus the Christ. We will look at a Hebrew understanding of Scripture, the Exodus and its implications in the fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan. We will also examine the Passover and its Christian symbolism revealed and completed in Jesus. The Rev. Linda Faith Chalk is the incumbent at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Greenfield Park, Quebec. She is the President of Crosstalk Ministries, an umbrella organization which seeks to build strong disciples of our Lord and Saviour Jesus through the ministry of Day Camps, Junior and Senior Camps and the opportunity for fellowship for Clergy and Laity. Linda Faith was raised in a Christian home and, having Jewish roots was encouraged from an early age to know and love both the old and New Testament. Her mother’s family members searching for their identity within Judaism has sent her on a journey of discovering the depth of her own spiritual roots and understanding of Jesus of the Messiah. Workshop C King’s Cross! Jesus in the Gospel of Mark and His decisive call to us. “Now when the centurion who stood facing him saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, truly this man was God’s son” Mark 15:39 Led by The Rev. Canon David Smith Mark does not read like a dry history. It is written in the present tense, often using words like immediately to pack the account into full action. You cant help but notice the abruptness and breathless speed of the narrative. ” This Gospel conveys, then something important about Jesus. He is not merely a historical figure, but a living reality, A person who addresses us today and calls us to decisive action. Capturing Timothy Keller’s excitement about the Gospel of Mark as displayed in the quote from his book King’s Cross, we will look at the cosmic, historical and personal story of Christ as portrayed in Mark. Pastor Keller’s sermon series on Mark’s Gospel preached at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, will be the lens from which we view our Lord’s life and ministry and what it means for our lives and ministries. I can’t wait. David was ordained in 1989 in the diocese of Fredericton. During his time there he and his wife Esther volunteered in the Diocese of Eldoret in Kenya then in 1999 he moved to Napanee. David enjoys playing in the Oldtimer’s Hockey league where he is mostly grateful to see the Zamboni come onto the ice at the end of a game. He often thinks he is really just a taxi driver for his two daughters Kathleen and Miriam. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ REGISTRATION FORM Complete the information below and mail to The Registrar – LLDC 36 Kerry Forest Drive RR4 Mallorytown Ontario K0E 1R0 Please print the following neatly First Name Family Name Address City/Town Province Postal Code Phone email Are you interested in preparing and leading a Morning Prayer service that includes a short sermon?
