PRIDE AND PREJUDICE by Jane Austin Adapted by Nona Shepphard Directed by Matthew Bannister Designed by Laura Cordery Lighting designed by Andy Grange One of the ‘most loved books’ in the English language has been brought to the stage in this hour long adaptation; a novel of manners by Jane Austen, first published in 1813, it tells the story of Mr and Mrs Bennet’s five unmarried daughters, who live in Hertfordshire in the early 19th century. The rich and eligible Mr Bingley and his friend, Mr Darcy, have moved into their neighbourhood, and while Bingley takes an immediate liking to the eldest Bennet daughter, Jane, Darcy is disdainful of local society and repeatedly clashes with the ebullient Elizabeth. The trials and tribulations of their turbulent relationships are brought to life as we share with the audience those wonderful and well-loved characters – lazy and ironic Mr Bennet and his excitable, social climbing, impressionable wife; strong minded, clever and independent Elizabeth and her beautiful, shy sister Jane; charming and personable Mr Bingley, with his good friend, the aloof, handsome and opinionated Mr Darcy; and the unctuous and odious Mr Collins with his revered patroness - the terrifying, harridan Lady Catherine de Bourgh.
