and have lost a combined total of 94 lbs!

Weight Loss: 54 lbs.

The “Cause for Change”: They went to a family reunion and saw the pictures. “We looked like baby whales”, said
Chuck. Trudy used to like wearing stripes, but after seeing “that picture” she knew something had to change. Chuck’s
mother and brother had diabetes and he didn’t want a steady diet of needles nor did he want diabetes, so he really
pushed Trudy. They knew they had to do something, and really needed to do it together.
The “New Deal”: Once they made the joint commitment, they didn’t drink or go out for dinner for 6 months.
Exercise: “We started on the treadmill 6 days a week, one hour a day, one after another. Neither of us wanted to be
there, but we just had to do it”, says Chuck. Both Trudy and Chuck also train once a week with Cindy Rayner to work on
strength, balance, injury prevention and accountability. “Both Chuck and I feel that joining a place like Yang’s, so friendly
and welcoming with varied exercise options, and committing to training with Cindy, who makes it fun and different, was
really helpful. We are able to '”stick with it“ even after periods when we travel or get sick and out of the routine. It would
be easy to “let down our guard” and get into bad habits but knowing that Cindy will be encouraging us, we can't slack off
for long. She pushes us outside our comfort zone and we have realized that we can do much more than we ever thought
we could!”
Nutrition: Using Weight Watchers as a guide, Trudy had a plan for every day and every meal...for every piece of food
they would eat. “I would cook all day Saturday or Sunday for the whole week. Once we got used to eating healthier, less
fatty foods we were never hungry”, says Trudy.
Biggest obstacles: “I like to eat out socially. And we like to have wine- If you like that kind of life you have to spend
extra time on the treadmill.” - Trudy
“I like snacking on chips or bread… so we just don’t buy it!” - Chuck
“Boredom. One of reasons I love Weight Watchers is that I don’t get bored with the variety of recipes they offer.” Trudy
Fortunately, most of their friends have also taken strides toward a more healthy lifestyle. However, when Trudy brought a
lo-cal cheese cake to a New Year’s party and Chuck organized a tailgate menu featuring chicken and tomato sandwiches
with salad, they were heckled mercilessly.
The Hanes’ Typical Daily Menu:
Breakfast: Cereal with yogurt or
blueberries
Lunch: Some type of meat, soup, or
salad & fruit
Snack: A choice of raisins & almonds,
low-fat ice cream, lo-cal
cookies, or a fruit bar
Dinner: Protein (the size of a deck of cards),
& lots of vegetables (and the Wisconsin
boy eats his potato)
Dessert: Fruit
Mantras for success:
“Everyday do something- If you rest you rust!”
- Trudy
“Movement is life- if you don’t move you don’t
live!”
- Chuck
“Never wear stretch pants to a big meal!”
- Trudy
“No needles! (No diabetes!)”
-Chuck
“How did you get fat? BLT! Bites, Licks, and
Tastes!”
-Trudy
“It’s all about por tion control!”- Trudy
Between managing their food intake, walking
the course at golf, using the treadmill, walking
the dog 30 minutes a day, and training 1-2
times a week with a trainer, Trudy and Chuck
have stayed slim and svelte for more than three
years now!
We are so proud of you!
“I think this would have been so much more difficult –
if not impossible if we hadn’t done it together. The
best part of the whole deal is that we feel great and
have the energy to do everything we want. And in
the end we have a really happy life - together!”
- Chuck & Trudy Hanes
You both look Marvelous!
