Celebrating 90 Years
of Caring…

YEARS OF CARING…
PRESENTED BY MICHAEL SUKHENKO

Celebrating 90 Years of Caring…
I
t was June 23, 1925, when a century old farm house on Thurston Road
became incorporated as the Rochester Presbyterian Home. That same year,
six women and one gentleman became the Home’s first family of seven.
The founding of Rochester Presbyterian Home was due to the generosity,
spirit, and initiative of two determined women; 83 year old Ms. Helen Niven
and 69 year old, Ms. Mary Skinner Dunn.
Ms. Niven gifted her family home and two acres of land to become the
first residence. Ms. Dunn contributed generously and conducted a fund
campaign to raise $125,000 to build a three story, colonial brick structure that
opened in 1927 and is known today as North Hall. The adjacent South Hall
residence was built in 1965 increasing the mission to serve 102 residents.
While Elder care communities in the last half of the 20th-Century increased dramatically with the
development of larger, efficient ‘facilities’ and continuing care
systems, the Presbyterian Home deliberately stayed small to preserve
that sense of “home and family” that our founders intended.
Yet, as the mission stayed constant, the vision for Elder care
changed with the times. In the early 1970’s the Home opened its
doors to people of all faiths and became an ecumenical ministry. In
1994, the Presbyterian Home developed the first memory care unit
to be offered in an Assisted Living residence. The need for this care
was so great that memory care services were expanded in 1997 to
include all three South Hall floors.
In 2002, in affirmation of the philosophy of our founders, the
Presbyterian Home became a certified Eden Alternative residence
and four unique Eden families were formed. Within these families
the focus became building relationships that nurture the human
spirit and assuring that Elders feel accepted, loved and at home.
In 2009, as the Eden journey evolved, the Presbyterian Home debuted
a new model of Elder care-four family homes, called the Memory Care
Residences at Cottage Grove in North Chili, New York. The mission had come
full circle. From the 1925 Niven family farmhouse, to the 2009 family homes
of Cottage Grove, Rochester Presbyterian Home has always been true to what
matters most: home and family. And, in our continuous pursuit of this vision,
RPH will break ground in 2015, on four new family homes-the Memory Care
Residences at Creekstone in Perinton, New York.
As we celebrate 90 years of caring, we recognize and thank all those who
have inspired and fulfilled the mission of Rochester Presbyterian Home through the years. With pride and
great respect, we will honor the values entrusted by our founders and will continue the traditions of excellence
that withstand the test of time.
Our Walls Tell Our Story
Sincere thanks for our generous donors.Praise and gratitude to more than
