Science melting

Science
We watched the film the ‘Snowman’ and saw that he melted
at the end because the heat from the sun melted the snow
he was made from.
We were set a challenge to design a pack of materials which
we could give to the snowman to help him to stop melting as
quickly.
We began to investigate which materials has the best
insulating properties.
Did you know that when you insulate something you protect
something by surrounding it in a material which helps to
stop the transmission of heat, sound of electricity? This
helps to keep the heat, sound or electricity contained.
We made some predictions:
“I think tin foil will help to insulate the snowman because it
keeps my cucumber cold for a long time in my lunchbox.” Jo
Jo
“I think newspaper will insulate the snowman well because it
is thick and will help to keep the snow colder for longer.
Heat will not be able to get to it.” Robbie
“I think the tin foil because it is similar to the material
used inside the cool bag.” Meka
We enjoyed making our insulating containers.
We found out that the
ice cubes wrapped in the
tin foil and newspaper
stayed frozen for the
longest. We decided
that tin foil and
newspaper were good
insulators.
