What is it?
• Percent solute dissolved in a solution!
• (m/v)
• Grams of solute used
• (g)
*Mass is in GRAMS (g)
*Volume is in MILLILITRES (mL) NOT LITRES!!
How Can I Find It?
• There are TWO ways!
Mass/ volume = Mass of solute (in g)
percent
Volume of solution (in mL)
X 100%
OR
X
100mL
= Mass of solute (in g)
Volume of solution (in mL)
•X is the mass of solute dissolved in 100mL of solution
•Method #2 will give you an answer in g/100mL
When you have percentage but
you need grams
• There are TWO ways!
Mass of = (m/v percent)(volume of solution in mL)
solute (in g)
100
OR
m/v percent as a decimal
100mL
=
X
Volume of solution (in mL)
•X is the mass of the solute in grams
Examples?
• In Grace’s toothpaste:
0.243% sodium Fluoride
125mL of toothpaste
0.243
100mL
=
X
125
30.375 = 100X
100
100
X= 0.304g of solute (sodium fluoride)
Mass/ volume = Mass of solute (in g)
percent
Volume of solution (in mL)
X 100%
OR
X
100mL
= Mass of solute (in g)
Volume of solution (in mL)
Mass of = (m/v percent)(volume of solution in mL)
solute (in g)
100%
m/v percent as a decimal
100mL
OR
=
X
Volume of solution (in mL)

b)
14.2g KCL
450mL solution
X

X
100mL
X = 1.75g
OR
X= 1.75%
c)
1.72g KMnO4
60mL solution
X100%
=
= 3.2%
31.5g Ca(NO3)2
1800mL solution
= 0.0175 g/mL
X100%
= 3%
Solve this


2.
1.52g HCl
24.1mL solution
X100%
= 6.31%
3.
x g CO2
250 mL
=
145 g CO2
100000 mL
(0.145%)
x g CO2 = 0.00145 g/mL X 250 mL
x = 0.363g CO2
4.
NaCl : 0.86%, KCl : 0.03%, CaCl2 : 0.033% , 350 mL of the solution
0.86% NaCl x 350 mL = 3.0 g NaCl
0.03% KCl x 350 mL = 0.1g KCl
0.033% CaCl2 x 350 mL = 0.12 g CaCl2
