POLL 7 Protective Factors to Resilience Karen Reivich, Andrew Shatte (2002) • • • • • • • Emotional Awareness & Regulation Impulse Control Optimism Flexible & Accurate Thinking Empathy Self-Efficacy Connectedness & Reaching Out Emotional Awareness & Self Regulation • The ability to have awareness of how your • emotions impact on both yourself and others • around you Impulse Control • This is about holding • It is the ability to be in an experience and not react immediately • It is to have a spiked emotion, and be able to count to 10 before you decide to respond • It is the space you give to your brain, so that your mind can create good thinking Optimism • The ability to work from a benefits mindset rather than a deficits-based one • It is the way we activate hope to make it functional • Work with the facts and build a resilient path forward Flexible & Accurate Thinking • Being open to the facts presented • Looking for alternate insights and making thinking adjustments through this process • Having a neutral response by saying, “hmm, now that’s curious” • Assessing the quality of thought to ensure objective understanding Empathy • The ability to recognise another person’s feelings and respond accordingly and respectfully understanding another’s emotion in relation to that of your own Self Efficacy • Having success in an activity, and using that as a personal reference point as evidence of ability • Patterns of attitude and choice that lead to effective outcomes and simultaneously contribute to self-worth Connectedness & Reaching Out • Placing importance in help-seeking behaviours through connections with other people • Having a range of friendship circles that reflect different areas of social need • Making the effort to build and nurture friendships that move and change with time • Choosing to create a voice and not remain silent Poll 19 More in depth look at 1. Emotional Awareness & Self Regulation Flexible & Accurate Thinking • Psychological Flexibility [known in the mental health world as PsychFlex] is THE core component to building resilience. • If young people can move away from their fixed mindsets and move into open mindsets, it has a significant impact on perceptions and therefore choices/outcomes. 23 Resource Activity Emotional Awareness & Self Regulation • Creating and raising emotional literacy. • The importance is to equip young people with the ability to identify and express their emotional response to any one situation.
