What is resiliency?
• There are currently three streams of resilience
theories
– Proactive Coping - thinking and planning ahead
– Resource Coping - building strengths & strategies
– Transactional Coping - behaviours & responses at
the point of transaction
• We will focus on: Resource Coping in this
webinar
Definition
• Resiliency is…
– Resilience is the ability to bounce back from
adversity.
– When we apply resilience through the positive
psychology lens, the learning is not only to bounce
back, but to bounce forward.

Emotional Awareness & Self
Regulation
• The ability to have awareness of how your
• emotions impact on both yourself and others
• around you
Impulse Control
• This is about holding
• It is the ability to be in an experience and not
react immediately
• It is to have a spiked emotion, and be able to
count to 10 before you decide to respond
• It is the space you give to your brain, so that
your mind can create good thinking
Optimism
• The ability to work from a benefits mindset
rather than a deficits-based one
• It is the way we activate hope to make it
functional
• Work with the facts and build a resilient
path forward
Flexible & Accurate Thinking
• Being open to the facts presented
• Looking for alternate insights and making
thinking adjustments through this process
• Having a neutral response by saying, “hmm,
now that’s curious”
• Assessing the quality of thought to ensure
objective understanding
Empathy
• The ability to recognise another person’s
feelings and respond accordingly and
respectfully understanding another’s emotion
in relation to that of your own
Self Efficacy
• Having success in an activity, and using that as
a personal reference point as evidence of
ability
• Patterns of attitude and choice that lead to
effective outcomes and simultaneously
contribute to self-worth
Connectedness & Reaching Out
• Placing importance in help-seeking behaviours
through connections with other people
• Having a range of friendship circles that reflect
different areas of social need
• Making the effort to build and nurture
friendships that move and change with time
• Choosing to create a voice and not remain
silent

More in depth look at
1. Flexible & Accurate Thinking
2. Emotional Awareness & Self Regulation
Flexible & Accurate Thinking
• Psychological Flexibility [known in the mental
health world as PsychFlex] is THE core
component to building resilience.
• If young people can move away from their
fixed mindsets and move into open mindsets, it
has a significant impact on perceptions and
therefore choices/outcomes.

Resource Activity
Emotional Awareness &
Self Regulation
• Creating and raising emotional literacy.
• The importance is to equip young people with
the ability to identify and express their
emotional response to any one situation.
Catch and Tag
• Expanding emotional literacy is the key to
emotional regulation
• If I know what I feel and if I can name that
feeling accurately – I am managing my
emotions
• Once I identify that emotion and express it
respectfully – I am regulating my emotions
