Texas Republicans Condemn Rick Perry Commercial
Perry Is An Embarrassment To The Governor’s Office
SAN ANTONIO – Members of the “Republicans and Independents for Sanchez” today
criticized Rick Perry for using the murder of a law enforcement officer for his own political
gain. Joining political scientists, newspapers and a former governor who have all condemned
Perry’s recent television ad, the group is encouraging all Texans to question the ethics and
character of a governor who would sink to such depths.
Bob Wortham (Beaumont), former U.S. Attorney appointed twice by President Reagan:
"I want a Texas Governor who will always tell the truth -- not just when it will help him
politically. Perry knows that the US Attorney's Office, the DEA, and the IRS have totally
cleared Mr. Sanchez and his bank of any wrongdoing yet he still tries to mislead the public
with his political ads. Perry also knows that two Federal Judges, after careful
consideration of the record, have discharged Sanchez's bank from any and all claims or
liability with the interpled funds and have said that, "the summary judgment was
appropriate.”
“With the knowledge of these facts Perry still wants to mislead the voters with false
political ads. To add the claim that a Federal Agent's death was connected to the Sanchez
held banks is nothing short of sleazy. Do you want a Governor you cannot trust? I do
not."
Dwight Jefferson (Houston), former Republican District Court Judge; “Republicans for
Sanchez” co-chair:
" As an appointee of Governor Bush, I am confident he would never have stooped so low
to win an election. Rick Perry has sunk to a level that incomprehensible. Tony Sanchez, on
the other hand, represents the future of Texas, and I think Texans need to be postured to
embrace that future and do what works for our state – not against it.”

Anne Whittington (San Antonio), immediate past president of Bexar County Republican
Women; “Republicans for Sanchez” co-chair:
“Tony Sanchez’s dynamic career and close-knit family have been achieved by hard work
and by setting high expectations for himself and for those around him. Now Tony wants to
raise the bar even higher to achieve great things for his fellow Texans. Apparently Rick
Perry doesn’t plan to reach so high. Based on his recent attack ad, it appears Perry’s ‘bar’
has become so slimy that he dropped it in the mud…and he dove in after it.”
“I know my fellow Republicans will think very hard before casting a vote for the man that
has proven he’s incapable of filling George W. Bush’s shoes. If this is an example of the
type of character and leadership Perry offers, Texas Republicans will be further dishonored
if he wins.”
Sylvia Hernandez Maddox (Austin), former State Republican Executive Committee
member; former State Chair of the Republican National Hispanic Assembly;
“Republicans for Sanchez” co-chair:
“The unelected governor had 17 years to solve the problems of the citizens of Texas.
Instead, he failed the test of moral leadership by circulating an untrue negative story about
Tony Sanchez’s business. The outrageous ‘11th hour’ desperate campaign of untruths
demeans the office of the Texas Governor. The Governor’s Momma should have punished
him not only for ethnic slurs, but also for telling ‘whoppers’. There is no place in public
service in Texas for a candidate who lacks the wisdom and moral character to run a state as
grand as Texas! Tony Sanchez stands ready as a strong leader to give back to all Texans
equal opportunities and a vision for the future.”
Susan Todd (Ft. Worth), president of the Texas Medical Association Alliance;
“Republicans for Sanchez” co-chair:
“As a Republican, I once worked hard to get Rick Perry elected to the position of Lt.
Governor, but I have been sorely disappointed by his lack of judgment as Governor. I now
find myself so disgusted by his latest campaign ad that implies Tony is tied to the death of
Enrique Camarena. I know hard-hitting ads are used because they can be effective, but
surely this ad crosses the boundaries of any decency. I cannot vote for a person who will
use for his own personal gain the death of a law enforcement officer killed in the line of
duty. Mr. Sanchez will have my vote!”
Chuck Nash (San Marcos), George W. Bush pioneer; President of Chuck Nash
Chevrolet; “Republicans for Sanchez” co-chair:
“Tony’s response to Rick Perry’s gutter ad says it all. He has responded with dignity and
sincerity to a classless attack stating that, unlike Perry, he does not want to win at the cost
of his self-respect. That’s the kind of leadership both Republicans and Democrats will
enjoy when Tony Sanchez becomes our next governor.”

Dale Ragle, M.D. (Dallas), Republican activist, past president of Texas Family Physicians
Association:
“As a Republican, I am disgusted with Rick Perry’s latest TV ad implying Tony Sanchez is
tied to the death of Enrique Camarena. To use the blood of Mr. Camarena’s sacrifice for
political gain is amoral and clearly crosses the line of decency. For the first time in at least
16 years, my vote goes to the Democratic candidate.”
Tessa Pospisil (Austin), “Republicans for Sanchez” member:
“I am a registered Republican who voted for George W. Bush for President. I have been
thoroughly disgusted with the ads I have seen Rick Perry running. The icing on the cake
however, was the latest ad about the slain DEA agents. That ad borders on slander if it
isn’t blatant slander on Rick Perry’s part. It is an embarrassment to the Republican Party
that the Governor of our State would use the deaths of these agents for his benefit. And so
that everyone knows how this Republican feels, I proudly display your bumper sticker
“Republicans for Sanchez” on the rear window of my car.”
“Republicans and Independents for Sanchez” is a network comprised of over 125 Texas
community leaders who have endorsed Tony Sanchez for Governor but may vote Republican
in other races. Please visit www.republicansforsanchez.com for more information.
