Discussion Questions:
!
1.
2.
3.
4.
What do you see?
Do you like this painting? Why or why not?
Would you hang this in your house? In what room?
You may also show a more “realistic” portrait print (such as Mona Lisa or George
Washington) as a comparison, if you wish. How are these pictures the same? How are
they different? Which one do you like better? Why?
5. You may also compare this print with Klee’s “Head of a Man” or Vermeer’s “Head of
a Girl”.

Activity - Create You Own Picasso Portrait
!
Materials:
1. Different colored construction paper (whole sheets to use as the background)
2. Different colored construction paper cut up into different shapes
3. Black and white sketches of different faces printed from internet (enlarged to
appropriate sizes)
4. Scissors, glue sticks and coloring utensils (crayons/pencils, etc.)
5. You may complete one before class to show as an example. Show the “before” sketch
that you cut up and then the “after” portrait
!
Activity (kids perform all steps):
1. Select a face to use
2. Cut up face into different pieces (kids can cut up face into sections or cut around
individual facial features, whatever they prefer)
3. Glue the cut up pieces onto a sheet of colored construction paper - encourage them to
rearrange the facial features as they like and to overlap pieces or leave gaps if they
want - they may also add solid colored shapes to their “portrait”
4. After gluing is done, they can draw in details and color sections of the face - whatever
they would like to do
