Dear SROM student,
Congratulations! Welcome, my name is Andrew Arnold and I am the
Executive Director of Solid Rock Outdoor Ministries (SROM). I am excited
that you are enrolled in the Wilderness Leadership Minor at Colorado
Christian University (CCU). SROM has partnered with CCU to provide the
40 day and 40 night wilderness expedition portion of your WLM. Your
40/40 course will be a life-changing experience. It is not “coincidence” that
you are one this 40/40 course. God calls specific ones He has chosen to
these courses. You are special to God and to us.
Table Of Content:
In 1977, my father, SROM founder Drew Arnold, received a vision from God
that He would use Christ-centered outdoor education and wilderness
adventure ministry to establish points of light around the world. In response
to that vision, he founded SROM in 1983. This original vision continues to
guide the mission and goals of SROM today. We believe that God is using
SROM to equip, train and disciple “children of light” (John 12:36) for the
nations. The Father is light (1 John 1:5), Jesus is the “light of the world”
(John 8:12) and you are a son or daughter of light (John 12:36, Ephesians
5:8, 1 Thessalonians 5:5). Many biblical leaders spent formative time in the
wilderness, resulting in greater understanding of their identity, mandate and
source. They became children of light burning for the glory of their Father.
We believe you are called by God to participate in a SROM course to burn
brighter as a son or daughter of your Father in heaven!
Your 40/40 with SROM starts NOW… not the day that you leave for the
backcountry. YOUR PREPARATION WILL DETERMINE YOUR
SUCCESS, LEVEL OF GROWTH, AND ACHIEVEMENT WHILE ON
COURSE. Do not wait until the last few weeks to prepare. We have
provided important information here that is designed with your complete
success in mind. Please carefully read all the provided information. We ask
that a holy expectation grow within you as you prepare.
Know that many continue to pray for you. May God bless you and keep
you. We look forward to seeing you soon.
In His Storyline,
Andrew Arnold

VISION OF SROM
In 1977, while studying for a Hebrew exam at Fuller Seminary, my father, Drew Arnold, sensed the move in his spirit to lead
young people out into creation as a basis for transformational encounter with God. He wrestled with how he could do
wilderness ministry while still fulfilling his call to the pastorate. As he was praying for grace to pass his exam, the Lord showed
him a vision of points of light all over the world. Drew began to pray about how this would come to pass, and the Lord spoke to
him: “If you get out of the way, I will show you what I can do.” This began the birthing of SROM.
These points around the globe in my father’s vision represent "sons and daughters of light" (John 12:36). The Father is light (1
John 1:5), Jesus is the “light of the world” (John 8:12), and we are children of light (John 12:36, Ephesians 5:8, 1
Thessalonians 5:5). Many Biblical leaders spent formative time in wilderness settings, resulting in a greater understanding of
their identity, mandate and source. They became sons of light burning for the glory of their Father.
Over the past 30 years, this transformational process has deeply affected students who have taken SROM courses. Our
students follow in the footsteps of our forefathers, who similarly wrestled in the wilderness with their kingdom identities and
callings. They return knowing who they are and who their Father is, with a clarified sense of mission. They leave as sons and
daughters of light, spreading the love and light of the Gospel all over the world. They become overseas missionaries. They
return home and transform their family lives. They invest in a younger generation. They become points of light all over the
globe.
Core Course Components
SROM has five core course components or goals: spiritual transformation, leadership development, authentic community,
character development, and skill acquisition. Our primary vision is to see “sons and daughters of light” (John 12:36, Ephesians
5:8) birthed and equipped in the wilderness and walking in the power of the Holy Spirit all over the earth. SROM uses the
model of experiential education to promote and facilitate students’ growth and learning in pursuit of these five main goals.
The focus of instructors and students varies from day to day. For example, there will be days on your course when students
will spend more time learning, discussing, and experiencing spiritual formation than acquiring hard skills, and vice versa.
Overall, your course experience will be an integrated approach aimed at achieving all five goals.
Spiritual Transformation
A college student recently asked us, "How can you
guarantee spiritual transformation?" While this may seem
like a challenging question, the answer is quite simple: We
don't. SROM does not guarantee spiritual transformation,
for God alone has the power to bring change into our lives,
as we co-operate with Him. God has been faithful
throughout history in pursuing His children, and we are
simply joining hands with His work.
When God makes a covenant with His children, He alone
establishes the terms, because He alone is able to keep
those terms. As a ministry, we cannot guarantee the ends;
we can only be obedient with the means. In the context of
the wilderness, SROM staff embarks on a Gospel journey
with students to answer the call of Christ to “make disciples
of all nations” (Matt. 28:19). We are committed to seeing
lives transformed “with unveiled faces” that we might
together “behold the glory of the Lord” (2 Cor. 3:18). It is by
this beholding with unveiled faces that students will “be
transformed in the same image of Christ, from glory to
glory!”(2 Cor. 3:18). Spiritual transformation miraculously
comes to fruition as the Father reveals Himself, and as
students understand who He has made them to be through
His word, creation, and Spirit.
We give God the glory for students who leave the
wilderness transformed. The Father has always been the
one to pursue relationships with His children and to restore
relational wholeness to the fractured places of our hearts.
He will keep His sons and daughters and His promise to
bring life from death. We are excited for those whom God
will allure into the wilderness and for how He will use
SROM courses to walk alongside His children. SROM
provides wilderness expeditions for spiritual transformation
as an act of obedience; however, the wilderness is simply a
setting and a means for transformation, which is
orchestrated by a Divine encounter with the Father,
Creator, and Savior of the universe.
Leadership Development
When we choose to follow Christ, there is a death unto life.
Desires and affections are displaced when we put His
words and ways above our own. His is a kingdom that is full
of upside-downs, of binary opposites that are at odds with
the unsanctified heart. Jesus says that the first shall be last,
and the last shall be first – that we must lose our lives in
order to find them. A call to leadership strengthens this call
to lay down our lives, for it includes a significant
responsibility to seek the success of others. Our lives are
aimed at pursuing not only our own individual growth and
goals, but also the success of those around us, to the
overall advancement of the kingdom.
The Lord has been using wilderness for thousands of
years to grow his leaders. Before He began public
ministry, Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness in
order to be tested in His identity. In this time of refining
preparation, we gain new understanding and new traits
as we are readied to lead well. Because of worldly
ideas regarding what constitutes real leadership, it can
be easy to lose a kingdom vantage point. Our hearts
tend to battle for the applause of men, to attract the
glory of men. These are false affections. He is true and
most attractive, and there is nothing we can add to
supplement His atoning work and glorious nature. We
arise out of the wilderness, leaning on our Beloved, for
He is our hope, our desire and our life.
Leadership is not loud. It is quietly and in secret that
true leaders are molded. Leaders are built by their time
in the presence of God. Intimacy precedes ministry.
We cannot represent someone we do not know. In the
stillness, we listen with soft ears to the voice of the
Father, spending countless more hours before Him
than with people. Out of this time before God arises
the gentle confidence of quiet, always insisting:
"Follow me as I follow Christ.” We lead by being led.
Expect to learn and experience biblically-defined
leadership roles (prophet, priest, shepherd king).
These are very different from what the world teaches,
so come with an open mind, ready to learn. All
students are required to serve as leaders of the day
(LODs) multiple times throughout the course.
Instructors teach and mentor students so that, as
LODs, they can take responsibility for risk
management, time management, spiritual leadership,
group travel plan management, and debrief facilitation
at the end of each day. Input from instructors and
peers during the debrief provides great opportunities
for students to grow in awareness, depth, and practice
as leaders. As the course progresses, students take
on more leadership responsibilities, with the course
often culminating in a student-led section and peak
ascent without the direct involvement of instructors.
Authentic Community & Character Development
God created us as image-bearers: We are capable of
making God’s goodness visible to others and also of
receiving that goodness from others. In our fallen
world, our fear of being exposed and rejected keeps
us from living in the light. We shy away from others in
order to protect ourselves. Paradoxically, our deepest
fear is also our greatest desire: To know and be fully
known. Unfortunately, society has bought the cheap
ticket of false connectedness, making us feel
connected through the instant and initial comfort of cell
phones and social media. In reality, we are weary from
hiding and wandering, and desperate for authentic
community. This longing is in our very being; we are
made for fellowship and worship.
The wilderness is a liminal place where we are
stretched beyond our physical capabilities and outside
our comfort zones. This lack of security allows us to
engage with other people and with our own questions
at a new and deeper level. We all crave realness,
adventure, and interrelatedness. Wilderness fosters an
environment where we can love and be loved beyond
the brokenness of our daily lives. We need the support
of those willing to walk alongside us and spur us on
toward Christ. We need a safe place to practice
kingdom living and to collectively throw our lives into
the story of God. Just like God’s people in Exodus,
though we may be freed from slavery, we are still on
our journey, not yet home.
We are called to lay down our lives for a body of
imperfects. Our lives are to be a reflection of the hope
Subhead.
Subhead.
ofSubhead.
Jesus Christ. True
authentic community
is a
constant state of fellowship and worship! Has this
future hope changed the way we live here and now? Is
there any reason we cannot begin the practice of
unveiled fellowship and abandoned worship with those
around us today?
In order to become more like Christ, we need to be
surrounded by people who can speak into our lives.
The profound community that develops on every
course provides for this. Students and instructors take
responsibility for their actions and are challenged to
grow in Christlikeness by demonstrating the fruits of
the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control.
Furthermore, students are expected to manage conflict
(there will be conflict) in a healthy manner, to practice
forgiveness, to rid themselves of bad attitudes, and to
drop selfish ambitions. Students are also challenged to
improve their communication and social skills, to learn
to listen actively to one another, and to control their
tongues. Using the feedback of instructors and others,
students are able to better integrate the physical,
emotional, intellectual, and spiritual domains of their
lives. The result is increased Christlikeness and the
relational skills for building authentic community.
Hard Skills Acquisition
Expect to learn many hard skills on your SROM
course. Depending on the course, skills may include
technical rock and snow climbing, backpacking,
orienteering, Leave No Trace principles, backcountry
living, cooking, and more. You can expect to come
away from the course with the skills needed to be safe
and competent in wilderness travel and living. SROM
is not a guiding company. SROM is a discipling
ministry in the context of wilderness – Transforming
sons and daughters of light, making disciples who
make disciples. Your leaders will be instructors and
not guides. Guides do all the work for their clients.
Instructors teach, model, observe and give feedback.
Learning hard skills is hands-on experiential
education, not a didactic one-way conversation
between teacher and student. The result is that as a
student, you learn, practice and become competent in
hard skills over time. You are equipped to transfer the
skills you learn to future outings, adventures and
leadership opportunities.
Admissions Policy
This is the Course Information Packet (hereafter “CIP”) specific to your course. THIS IS THE CRITICAL AND
DEFINITIVE BODY OF INFORMATION YOU WILL NEED IN ORDER TO PREPARE FOR AND ATTEND YOUR SROM
COURSE. Completely reading and becoming familiar with its contents are IMPERATIVE and its contents become
your complete responsibility. You are also agreeing to all gear requirements and standards of direction for
purchase of critical equipment. Proper and adequate hiking boots are essential to your personal health and
physical safety when going into deep wilderness environments. For this reason, we offer explicit instruction on
boot selection.
SROM BEHAVIORAL MATRIX
BE SAFE - BE RESPONSIBLE - SHOW KINDNESS AND RESPECT
We reserve the right to expel any student who demonstrates behavior that is unsafe, disruptive or distracts from
the mission of a course. We will not tolerate harassment, use of drugs and alcohol, theft or misuse of property,
low motivation or disregard of instructors. If a student is expelled, there will be no refunds of any kind and the
student (or parent/guardian) is responsible for all expenses related to evacuation, personal food,
accommodations, and travel.
Prior to the season, your SROM instructors undergo a rigorous training schedule designed to provide the
skills necessary for wilderness leadership and education. All instructors are field tested in order to give you the
best wilderness course possible. Your welfare is their utmost concern. Whether you are a new or seasoned
outdoorsman, student, or youth leader, your ability to HUMBLY FOLLOW INSTRUCTION or re-direction is
paramount to the welfare and well-being of everyone on the course. We reserve the right to expel any student
who demonstrates behavior that is unsafe, disruptive or distracts from the mission of a course, or who exhibits
behavior or attitudes not in line with the guidelines of this document and your Course Information Packet.
We will not tolerate harassment, use of drugs and alcohol, theft or misuse of property, low motivation, lack of cooperation and disregard of instructors. If a student is expelled, there will be no refund of tuition and the student
must pay all expenses for evacuation, personal food, accommodations, and travel. Evacuation from a course
back to SROM headquarters incurs a mandatory $300 PER DAY EVACUATION FEE. THE BEHAVIORIAL
MATRIX ABOVE OUTLINES BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS FOR EACH STUDENT.
The statements listed on the next page are those expected from all SROM students. SROM reserves the right
to expel any student that demonstrates behavior that is unsafe, disrupting or distracts from the mission of a
course. Removing a student from a course is determined at the discretion and decision of the instructor team
who is in the field. SROM has a 3 strike policy. If there are more than 3 violations of any of the agreements
then the student is subject to being kicked off the course.

SROM Equipment Policy
SROM Equipment Policy
SROM equipment selection and the outfitting of each student are critical to the success of each course. The
equipment that we provide vitally affects the course in terms of both safety and comfort. At the beginning of
each course, students will check out all group gear, as well as personal gear needed to supplement what
gear they have brought with them. During this gear check-out time, students have the opportunity to inspect
and comment on the condition of the gear and make note of any damage. When students return gear,
SROM staff inspects it as it is checked in. Any gear damage observed at check-in, not previously noted at
the time of check-out, becomes the financial responsibility of the students.
Damaged or lost gear will be charged to the students’ accounts and paid via the credit card on file. Students
will be informed of all charges related to damaged or lost gear and charges will be assessed to the credit
card on file. The student will receive a receipt of the total charges along with an invoice outlining who
incurred what charges.
Personal Equipment
SROM will provide you with specific technical equipment needed during your course. However, THERE ARE ITEMS
THAT YOU MUST PURCHASE PRIOR TO ARRIVING FOR YOUR COURSE AND BRING WITH YOU. Below is a
list of equipment guidelines, your important packing list, and purchasing options. These will help you make good
decisions regarding the purchase of personal gear, while also saving you money. IT IS MANDATORY TO ARRIVE
AT SROM WITH THE GEAR SPECIFIED THAT YOU ARE TO ACQUIRE BEFORE ARRIVAL. DEVIATING FROM
GEAR REQUIREMENTS COULD CAUSE YOU TO BE EXPELLED FROM YOUR COURSE. THE RIGHT GEAR IS
A SERIOUS MATTER!
We highly recommend that you take advantage of SROM’s Gear Packages; these are packages priced with
the right selection of top quality equipment at an incomparably low cost. Choose from one of three Gear
Packages that are right for you. You are guaranteed to save at least 40% off the retail price. See below for
packages and pricing.
Equipment Guidelines
The gear list includes required items, recommended items that you can buy in the SROM store, recommended items
that SROM does not carry, and optional items that are your choice to locate and bring along. If you do not purchase a
Gear Package from SROM, we suggest that you go to the biggest outdoor store you can find in your area. THE
GEAR LIST WE PROVIDE IS DESIGNED TO COVER ALL YOUR NEEDS AND IS MANDATORY.
Below are some guidelines for the more specialized (AND MOST IMPORTANT) gear items, such as boots, rain gear,
and clothing.
Boots
Your boots are the most important piece of equipment that you will buy for your
course. Happy feet make happy people. In the packing list below, we have included
10 boots that are designated for your course. Blisters are common and painful
injuries that take place in the backcountry due to improper fit and quality of boots. It
is for this reason that we are providing a selection of boots to choose from that are
deemed appropriate for your course. PLEASE DO NOT CHOOSE A BOOT
DIFFERENT FROM THE SELECTIONS BELOW! We have chosen these boots
because time after time they have proven durable, functional and comfortable. Foot
care cannot be taken lightly in the backcountry. Keeping your feet in good condition
is paramount to safety and success. IT IS ALSO MANDATORY THAT THE
BOOTS YOU PURCHASE ARE FULLY BROKEN-IN BEFORE YOU ARRIVE AT SROM FOR YOUR COURSE. “Broken-in” means
that you have hiked repeatedly with a weighted pack in your boots and blisters and sore feet are a thing of the past! Some of you
may be avid hikers and may already have a pair of great boots and do not want to buy a completely new pair. If this is the case,
please call SROM Admissions at 307-755-0642 and one of our course managers will talk with you. We do this to ensure that you
are coming prepared and are set up for success before entering the field.
If you live in an area where finding the right boot is difficult, ask your local outdoor store to order boots for you. Many outdoor stores
will order in the size below and the size above what you think you’ll need. When trying on your boots, please remember to bring
mid-weight or heavy-weight hiking socks.
Improper footwear can contribute to significant pain and discomfort of the feet and ultimately lead to an injury related evacuation.
SROM RESERVES THE RIGHT TO HAVE YOU REMEOVED FROM COURSE IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE CORRECT KIND OF
FOOTWEAR WHEN YOU ARRIVE FOR YOUR COURSE; THIS MEANS WELL-FITTING, BROKEN-IN AND AMPLE
FOOT/ANKLE PROTECTION.
Note: Prices on these boots tend to be higher than a lower quality boot. Please do not try to cut costs by buying a cheaper boot than
what is in this selection. FAILURE TO ARRIVE AT SROM WITH AN APPROPRIATE BOOT MAY RESULT IN YOUR REMOVAL
FROM THE COURSE!
Backpacks
Backpacks should be at least 6,000 to 7,000 cubic inches. Fit is important! If you are bringing your own pack, you should have used
it previously on a minimum five-day trip. INTERNAL FRAME PACKS ARE REQUIRED. If you are purchasing, get professional help.
Make sure you put weights into the pack in the store. Some stores have sand-bags or weights for this purpose. Name brands such
as Dana Design, Gregory, Osprey, Deuter and REI provide high quality packs. If you have another brand, such as Jansport® or
Coleman®, YOU MUST CALL US and speak with a course manager before bringing it. SROM WILL PROVIDE A BACKPACK FOR
YOUR COURSE IF YOU DO NOT PURCHASE ONE
Rain Gear
Rain gear is an important piece of equipment in mountain climates. It not only keeps you dry when it counts, but it also acts as a
protective outer shell against wind and cold. Rain pants and rain jackets must be rated “waterproof” by the manufacturer, and be of
a minimal design for backpacking. SKI JACKETS WITH LOTS OF POCKETS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE. Single layer waterproof
fabrics such as Gore-Tex® or Conduit® are examples of good rain material. Jackets should have only two or three pockets and
pants should have an ankle or knee-length zip on the side for getting them on over boots. Light weight (maximum of 16oz) and tight
compression are highly desirable features.
Clothing
Clothing should also be of minimal design for backpacking. Your nylon wind-pants and quick-dry shorts will be the clothes you
spend the most time in. Nylon pants should have a zipper or Velcro at the ankle to allow them to be put on over boots. It is nice if
they zip off at the knee to convert into shorts, but it is not required. T-shirts and underwear must be either wool or synthetic for
warmth and quick drying. ALL CLOTHING MATERIAL SHOULD BE MADE OF POLYPRPYLENE, CAPILENE, WOOL, OR
FLEECE. COTTON IS ALLOWED ONLY ON DESERT EXPEDITIONS.
Gaiters
GAITERS ARE REQUIRED ON YOUR COURSE. Though you may not think that you need them, you will not regret having them.
Gear Packages
SROM can sell you equipment and gear at near pro-deal price (close to 50% off)! We have designed three different gear packages that
get you the RIGHT GEAR at the RIGHT PRICE! Every year, students show up with gear “the retail guy” showed them, but unfortunately
it is not the correct gear for your course because that guy didn’t really understand what you needed to buy. Please trust us that we have
YOUR best interests in mind. Every piece of gear, from your boots, to your pot scraper, to your travel-size Bible will affect the quality of
your course. Regarding the purchasing of SROM gear packages, please note the following:
NO DELETIONS, SUBSTITUTIONS OR EXCHANGES OF ANY ITEMS IN THE GEAR PACKAGES ARE ALLOWED. THESE
PACKAGES ARE PRE-SET AND PRE-ORDERED. THEY ARE SOLD AS A SINGLE PACKAGE PURCHASE ONLY.
PLEASE DO NOT REQUEST CHANGES TO THE PACKAGES. THESE PACKAGES ARE SOLD ON AN AS-IS BASIS.
THANK YOU FOR UNDERSTANDING THIS POLICY!

items. You won’t find this gear

SROM PACKING LIST
Personal Food/Re-rations
Expect to eat well on your course. Most students consider the meals they prepare to be a highlight of
their course. Students become backcountry cooking masters by the end of their courses. However,
know that some days you will feel full, while others, you will feel like you are “starving”. It all depends
on temperature, weather, your metabolism, and the physical activity of the day. Students will be rerationed food every 8 to 10 days via horse-packer. You will eat three meals a day; however, lunch is
more of a snack throughout the day than a meal. Students are allowed to bring light/non-bulky snacks
for re-rations. There are a total of four re-rations. Students will also be able to ration in batteries, sun
block, feminine supplies, blister kits, personal hygiene items, etc. For example, on re-ration number
four, some students will send in three power bars, four crystal light packets, two extra batteries, hand
sanitizer, and sun block for a 10-day section of the course. Re-ration items are limited and must be
approved by your instructors. Upon arrival, please consult your instructors about rations. Please refrain
from putting too many items in each of your re-rations. Our horse-packer will not carry out extra weight.
If you bring something in on a re-ration then you will keep that item for the remainder of the trip. Things
like trash and food waste will be the only items that leave with the horse packer.
, but you will NOT receive it in the field.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT BOOTS
Your boots are the most important piece of equipment that you must buy for your course. Happy feet make happy people. In the packing list
below, we have included 10 boots that are designated for your course. Blisters are common and painful injuries that take place in the
backcountry due to improper fit and quality of boots. It is for this reason that we are providing a selection of boots to choose from that are
deemed “appropriate” for your course. PLEASE, DO NOT CHOOSE A BOOT DIFFERENT FROM THE SELECTIONS BELOW! We have
chosen these boots because time after time they have proven durable, functional and comfortable. Foot care cannot be taken lightly in the
backcountry. Keeping your feet in good condition is paramount to safety and success. IT IS ALSO MANDATORY THAT THE BOOTS YOU
PURCHASE ARE FULLY BROKEN-IN BEFORE YOU ARRIVE AT SROM FOR COURSE. “Broken-in” means that you have hiked repeatedly
with a weighted pack in your boots and blisters and sore feet are a thing of the past! Some of you may be avid hikers and may already have a
pair of great boots and do not want to buy a completely new pair. If this is the case, please call SROM Admissions at 307-755-0642 and one of
our course managers will talk with you. We do this to ensure that you are coming prepared and are set up for success before entering the
field.
If you live in an area where finding the right boot is difficult then ask your local outdoor store to order boots for you. Many outdoor stores will
order in the size below and the size above what you think you’ll need. When trying on your boots please remember to bring mid-weight or
heavy weight hiking socks.
Improper footwear can contribute to significant pain and discomfort of the feet and ultimately lead to an injury related evacuation. SROM
RESERVES THE RIGHT TO HAVE YOU REMEOVED FROM COURSE IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE CORRECT KIND OF FOOTWEAR
WHEN YOU ARRIVE FOR YOUR COURSE. (THIS MEANS WELL-FITTING, BROKEN-IN AND AMPLE FOOT/ANKLR PROTECTION). TO
SEE WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT WATCH HERE!
Note: Prices on these boots tend to be higher than a lower quality boot. Please, do not try to cut cost by buying a cheaper boot than what is in
this selection. FAILURE TO ARRIVE AT SROM WITH AN APPROPRIATE BOOT MAY RESULT IN YOUR REMOVAL FROM THE
COURSE!

Leave No Trace (LNT)
SROM courses go to beautiful wilderness areas. We are each called to be effective stewards of God’s creation. SROM
is a nonprofit partner of the Leave No Trace (LNT) Center for Outdoor Ethics and is committed to teaching and
practicing LNT Principles on every course. You will learn more on your course, but please be aware of the following
procedures for implementing each of the seven LNT Principles.
1. Plan Ahead and Prepare
Procedure: While SROM will carefully plan your course, PLEASE DO YOUR PART BY READING YOUR CIP,
choosing correct personal gear and clothing, and repackaging any personal snacks you bring to minimize potential
litter.
2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
Procedure: Where trails are present you will use them, even if they are wet or muddy. When traveling off trail ,you will
travel side by side rather than single-file and avoid damaging woody plants. You will use established campsites if they
are present, or otherwise choose the most durable surfaces available to camp. Understand that good campsites are
found, not made. Before leaving your campsite you will naturalize and disguise it, including replacing any rocks you
may have moved.
3. Dispose of Waste Properly
Procedure: You will bury your feces in a cat hole at least 6 inches deep and 200 feet from the nearest water, camp, or
trail. You will carry out any trash, litter, or leftover food. You will not wash within 200 feet of a water source.
4. Leave What You Find
Procedure: You will leave natural and historical features undisturbed. You will not pick flowers or collect Indian
artifacts, fossils, gems, bones, or antlers.
5. Minimize Campfire Impacts
Procedure: You will use a backpacking stove for most meals. You will make campfires only with your instructor’s
permission and supervision. When making a campfire, you will use existing fire rings when present. You will only burn
wood that is dead, on the ground, and no larger around than your wrist so that you can successfully burn it to ash. You
will not burn leftover food or other waste. Before you leave the area, you will ensure that the fire is out, scatter the
ashes, and restore the appearance of the fire site.
6. Respect Wildlife
Procedure: You will observe wildlife from a distance rather than approaching it, and will not harass wildlife in any way.
You will not feed wildlife, intentionally or unintentionally. You will seek to avoid wildlife during sensitive times like
nesting or mating.
7. Be Considerate of Others
Procedure: You will respect other visitors and protect the quality of their experience. You will step well off of the trail
during rest breaks, seek campsites out of sight of trails, let sounds of creation prevail, and re-latch livestock gates.
Yield the right of way and step off the downhill side of the trail for horse packers and other livestock.
WORK OUT PLAN!
Your Wilderness Training Begins Now!
Train for your course for a minimum of three months.
During your training, you will progressively increase
your pack weight, time, distance and elevation gain.
This will ensure that you effectively prepare for your
course. Do not rush to increase your training intensity
as this will increase your risk of a training injury,
preventing you from being ready for your course.
Two weeks before your course you should be at peak
performance. This means that you should able to
carry a 40-50 pound pack for up to 6 miles at a 2-3
mile per hour pace, day after day.
You will need to train in all 3 aspects of fitness:
Cardiovascular, Strength, and Flexibility
Cardiovascular training
Biking, rowing, and swimming are good aerobic
options in the early stages of training. As you get
closer to your course include more activities that load
the spine and legs the same way that hiking will, such
as jogging, walking on an inclined treadmill, running,
and walking/hiking up and down hills or stairs.
Strength Conditioning
Focus on building strength in areas specific to course
activities: Strength in your upper back and shoulders will
help you carry a heavy backpack as well as use your
trekking poles and ice axe effectively. Calves, hips,
quadriceps, hamstrings, and gluteus muscles are used
when ascending and descending peaks, rock climbing,
and backpacking. Your core, abdominal and lower back
area are perhaps the most important of them all.
Increasing your core strength will not only help your
balance when your pack is on, further preventing injuries,
but it will also allow you to travel longer. Training with gym
machines and free weights will help you build overall
strength but training primarily with free weights is best as
the additional balance required helps better engage
stabilizer muscles that are important for these activities.
Flexibility Conditioning
Be sure to include 5 -10 minutes of targeted stretching
following every workout. If you have areas of concern, add
emphasis on that area and make sure you have normal
range of motion. This will be important as you
increase the intensity of your workouts. Stretching
will also help keep you free from injury as well as
help you recover faster if you do get injured.
Additional Challenges
In addition to preparing physically for the challenges
of a SROM course, you will need to prepare mentally
for the challenges of being cold, wet, tired and
hungry. No matter how much you prepare for your
course, you will still have some days that leave you
physically and mentally exhausted. Weather in the
mountains is highly variable; rain, snow, cold, hot,
and high winds are all common on SROM courses
and can sometimes all happen in the window of a
single day. Biting insects such as flies and
mosquitoes can vary from a minor annoyance to a
major aggravation, leaving you covered in bites.
Cuts, scrapes, bruises, aches, pains and blisters are
common when living and recreating outdoors. As you
exercise to prepare for your course, take time to
mentally prepare for the mental and emotional
challenges that you will likely experience while on a
course with SROM.
12 WEEK WORK OUT PLAN
Below is a workout schedule for training that begins three months before your course start date. Be sure
to adequately warm up before you work out and to stretch after your workout to prevent injuries. Wear
your hiking boots for as many workouts as you can. This will help you break in your boots and get your
feet used to being in a stiff hiking boot.
