The Challenge
Trek50 is a monster trekking event for teams of four
on the Pennines, the range of hills often referred to
as ‘the backbone of England’.
The event is designed to test to
the limit your physical fitness,
mental strength and team
spirit. The route has climbs
totalling more than 2400
metres, equivalent to climbing
Ben Nevis and Snowdon.
However with training, team
work and some grit and
determination your team will
be able to complete the challenging
circular 50 mile route.
This area of outstanding natural
beauty is renowned for its rugged
moorland landscapes, steep sided,
gorge-like river valleys and rocky
outcrops. Although predominantly
undeveloped with just a scattering of
farms, agricultural buildings and small
rural communities, the landscape
is dotted with reminders of the
industrial heritage of this area.
The route we have selected for
Trek50 uses some of the many
well-known trails that criss-cross
the Pennine hillsides including
The Pennine Way, The Pennine
Bridleway, The Mary Townley Loop and The Burnley
Way. These routes incorporate some of the ancient
packhorse routes and drover’s roads as well as some
more recent additions which all help to make this
both an interesting and challenging route.
The event starts and finishes at Littleborough
Sports Club which is situated near the shores of
Hollingworth Lake and nestles in the hills on the
Lancashire side of the Pennines.
The route passes under the
Rakewood viaduct and climbs
quickly up to Windy Hill where
it joins The Pennine Way to cross
over the M62 and pass the rocky
outcrop known as ‘Robin
Hood’s Bed’, reputedly an
overnight resting place of
the heroic character and
at 472m the highest
point on Trek50.
The Pennine Way
follows the line of
Blackstone Edge,
a physical barrier
which runs parallel
to the boundary between the
red and white rose counties of
Lancashire and Yorkshire.
After crossing the A58
at The White House PH
the route continues on The
Pennine Way, skirting four
moorland reservoirs en-route
to Stoodley Pike and its 121
foot monument which affords
fantastic views along Calderdale.
We descend steeply down The Pennine
Bridleway to our
check-point

The Challenge (continued)
in the small market town of Hebden Bridge before
climbing through Hebden Dale to Hardcastle Crags
which gets its name from the millstone grit sandstone
stacks above the valley and is sometimes known as
Little Switzerland because of its narrow, steep-sided
wooded valley.
The route re-joins The Pennine Way
at Clough Head before crossing the
dam wall at Gorple Lower Reservoir.
After skirting Widdop Reservoir the
route climbs steeply to pass Gorple
Stones, the highest point of this
section at 421m. The path across
Worsthorne Moor brings you down
to Hurstwood Reservoir
and its neighbour Cant
Clough Reservoir before
you descend on The
Pennine Bridleway to the
half-way point at The Ram
Inn, Holme Chapel where a
hot meal awaits.
From The Ram Inn the path
continues along The Pennine
Bridleway climbing steeply up
to Deerplay Moor where our
route joins The Burnley Way and
continues up to Thievely Pike.
The moorland summit is marked
by a Trig Pillar at 449m and from
here you have views to Pendle Hill
in the north and back to Stoodley
Pike in the east. The route
descends for about 1.5 miles to
where it meets the A681.
After crossing the road the route continues along
the ancient Limer’s Gate path that takes us high
above Gorpley Reservoir which can be seen to the
left in the valley below. The Todmorden Centenary
Way climbs over Weather Hill and then down to
meet Foul Clough Road, used by miners to transport
coal by pony down from the mines.
The route takes us down into Ramsden Wood
Clough and across the Ragby Bridge, an
ancient pack horse route that
crosses the water course.
A sharp climb to Inchfield
precedes the descent to
the checkpoint at Walsden
Cricket Club.
Leaving the checkpoint
you have a short walk along
the road before crossing
the Rochdale Canal which
precedes a steep climb up the
lane to North Hollingsworth
Farm which takes us back onto
The Pennine Bridleway. The
path skirts around Walsden
Common to the hamlet of
Lumbutts where we follow the
minor road for about 0.5 miles
to the village of Mankinholes.
Here we leave the road to
re-join The Pennine Bridleway
to Swillington from where
we climb back up to Stoodley
Pike We then re-trace our
footsteps across the moors
to our final checkpoint at the
White House PH and then along
Blackstone Edge towards the finish
at Littleborough where a warm
welcome awaits from friends and family as we cross
the finish line before enjoying a massage, hot food
and a well-earned celebratory drink.

Your questions answered
How does it work?
To take part you are required to pay a non-refundable registration fee of £195 per team, when you sign up
for the challenge. You are then asked to raise minimum funds of £2,000 for MedEquip4Kids. In order to be
confirmed on the challenge your team must have £600 of the funds in by 22 May 2013. The remaining money
should be paid in by 22 July 2013. In return we provide full event support, including fundraising advice and
sponsor forms, route cards and equipment lists. We also provide qualified event marshals, first aid support,
certificates, medals, trophies for winning teams, t-shirts and a post event breakfast. The more money your
team raises by taking part in Trek50, the greater the direct benefit to children’s healthcare. You are therefore
encouraged to exceed the minimum fundraising target.
How fit do I have to be?
Trek50 is a tough event. It is achievable by people with
a reasonable level of fitness, who are prepared to put
in plenty of training beforehand. The more you train,
the more you will enjoy the challenge. The event
provides you with a great incentive to train and get
fit for, whilst, at the same time, knowing you are
raising funds for an excellent cause.
Do I need special equipment?
It is essential that you come prepared with the
correct equipment for the challenge. We insist that
you have walking boots or fell running shoes for the
challenge. Trainers are not allowed. You must also
have the relevant maps, compass and appropriate
waterproof clothing.
Where does the event start?
The event starts in Littleborough, Lancashire. You
will therefore need to organise accommodation
in the area for Friday 21 June. Camping will be
available at the event base for £5 per person from
Friday to Sunday. Your team will need to check-in
and attend a safety briefing on the Friday
evening. Teams will then be set off the following
morning from 7am onwards.

Why MedEquip4Kids
needs your support
MedEquip4Kids improves the health of children and
babies by providing equipment not available from limited
NHS resources. The charity believes every child should
have access to the best medical care when they need it
most. Over the last 27 years, MedEquip4Kids has raised
over £12 million to fund equipment and facilities which
directly benefit around 79,000 children each year. These
include:
• Lifesaving paediatric medical equipment such as
defibrillators, scanners and monitors to ensure children’s
units are fully equipped to deliver the best care.
• Incubators and ventilators for neonatal units to help
care for premature babies.
• Toilet training tools to help disabled children overcome
problems with continence.
• Mobility aids like walking frames to give disabled
children more independence.
• Facilities to improve children’s experience of
hospital treatment, such as multisensory rooms, play
equipment, toys and more child-friendly waiting areas.
The charity helps babies like Buddy, who was born 12
weeks early weighing just 2lbs 9oz. The tiny baby’s life
depended on 24-hour care in an incubator. Thanks to
MedEquip4Kids, the neonatal unit in Royal Oldham
Hospital was fully equipped to give him this intensive
care. Today he is a happy, healthy little boy.
MedEquip4Kids needs you to take on Trek50 so that
more children and babies like Buddy can receive the
highest standards of medical care.
