Flavours of Introduction to Psychology and Neuroscience at Dalhousie University Introduction to Psychology & Neuroscience I: From Neuron to Person (PSYO1011, PSYO1021, PSYO1031) Face-to-face (F2F) options: PSYO1011: This course is presented in three units, each unit is taught by a different instructor. Lectures are twice per week (80-mins each). There are 2 quizzes per unit and a final exam at the end of each unit. This class also includes a lab component worth 20% of your total course mark. Labs are smaller groups (max 26) that involve hands-on activities and focus on teaching research design. **This is the recommended course for students planning to go on to 2nd-year PSYO/NESC courses, due to the lab-focus on research design. PSYO1021: This course is presented in three units, with all three units taught by the same instructor. This class does not involve a lab component so all of your mark comes from multiple choice exams and quizzes/assignments. Online option: PSYO1031: The class is entirely online with students only coming to campus for their 3 exams unless they reside more than 50km away (students >50km from campus write their exams with a proctor). This course includes online labs (x6) worth 20% of your total course mark, quizzes, and exams. Introduction to Psychology & Neuroscience II: From Social Psychology to Psychopathology (PSYO1012, PSYO1022, PSYO1032) Face-to-face (F2F) options: PSYO1012: This course is presented in three units, each unit is taught by a different instructor. Lectures are twice per week (80-mins each). There are 2 quizzes per unit and a final exam at the end of each unit. This class also includes a lab component worth 20% of your total course mark. Labs are smaller groups (max 26) that involve hands-on activities and focus on teaching research design. **This is the recommended course for students planning to go on to 2nd-year PSYO/NESC courses, due to the lab-focus on research design and report writing. PSYO1022: (offered in the winter and spring terms) has two sections, each taught by 1 instructor for the whole term. The largest section has an enrolment of around 200 students. This class does not involve a lab component so all of your mark comes from multiple choice exams and quizzes (possibly assignments as well). Online option: PSYO1032: The class is entirely online with students only coming to campus for their 3 exams unless they reside more than 50km away (students >50km from campus write their exams with a proctor). This course includes online labs (x6) worth 20% of your total course mark, quizzes, and exams. Introduction to Psychology & Neuroscience Info • If registering for PSYO1011 or PSYO1012, students must find a lab section that fits with their schedule (i.e., does not create a course conflict). If you cannot find a lab section that fits, register for any lab section with space and then contact the course coordinator for assistance. • If registering for PSYO1031 or PSYO1032, students completing the course offcampus (more than 50km away from Dal) must find a proctor for their 3 exams. Rules and regulations for proctors will be sent out to students enrolled in the online courses, prior to their start dates. • PSYO1011, PSYO1021, and PSYO1031 are considered to be equivalent. This means that if a student takes more than one of these courses, only the higher of the two grades will be used in the calculation of their cumulative GPA. • PSYO1012, PSYO1022, and PSYO1032 are considered to be equivalent. This means that if a student takes more than one of these courses, only the higher of the two grades will be used in the calculation of their cumulative GPA. • Intro to Psych & Neuro I and II can be taken in either order (I -> II or II -> I) • Intro to Psych & Neuro I and II can be taken concurrently (e.g., PSYO1011 and PSYO1032 in the fall term) • To enroll in 2nd-year Psychology/Neuroscience courses, students require a B- in both Intro to Psych & Neuro I AND II, regardless of the flavour combination (e.g., B- in 1011 and B- in 1012, OR B- in 1021 and B- in 1012, OR B- in 1031 and B- in 1022, etc.). o If a student fails to receive a B- in either course, and wants to take upperyear Psychology/Neuroscience courses, they must redo the course (and receive a B-). • Questions/comments/concerns regarding Introduction to Psychology (registration, grade requirements, topics, textbooks, etc.) can be directed to Coordinator at [email protected] Introduction to Psychology & Neuroscience at a Glance Course Unit Topics Format Terms Offered Enrollment PSYO1011 1.
