Flavours of Introduction to Psychology and Neuroscience
at Dalhousie University
Introduction to Psychology & Neuroscience I:
From Neuron to Person
(PSYO1011, PSYO1021, PSYO1031)
Face-to-face (F2F) options:
PSYO1011: This course is presented in three units, each unit is taught by a different
instructor. Lectures are twice per week (80-mins each). There are 2 quizzes per unit and
a final exam at the end of each unit. This class also includes a lab component worth 20%
of your total course mark. Labs are smaller groups (max 26) that involve hands-on
activities and focus on teaching research design.
**This is the recommended course for students planning to go on to 2nd-year
PSYO/NESC courses, due to the lab-focus on research design.
PSYO1021: This course is presented in three units, with all three units taught by the
same instructor. This class does not involve a lab component so all of your mark comes
from multiple choice exams and quizzes/assignments.
Online option:
PSYO1031: The class is entirely online with students only coming to campus for their 3
exams unless they reside more than 50km away (students >50km from campus write
their exams with a proctor). This course includes online labs (x6) worth 20% of your
total course mark, quizzes, and exams.
Introduction to Psychology & Neuroscience II:
From Social Psychology to Psychopathology
(PSYO1012, PSYO1022, PSYO1032)
Face-to-face (F2F) options:
PSYO1012: This course is presented in three units, each unit is taught by a different
instructor. Lectures are twice per week (80-mins each). There are 2 quizzes per unit and
a final exam at the end of each unit. This class also includes a lab component worth 20%
of your total course mark. Labs are smaller groups (max 26) that involve hands-on
activities and focus on teaching research design.
**This is the recommended course for students planning to go on to 2nd-year
PSYO/NESC courses, due to the lab-focus on research design and report writing.
PSYO1022: (offered in the winter and spring terms) has two sections, each taught by 1
instructor for the whole term. The largest section has an enrolment of around 200
students. This class does not involve a lab component so all of your mark comes from
multiple choice exams and quizzes (possibly assignments as well).
Online option:
PSYO1032: The class is entirely online with students only coming to campus for their 3
exams unless they reside more than 50km away (students >50km from campus write
their exams with a proctor). This course includes online labs (x6) worth 20% of your
total course mark, quizzes, and exams.

If registering for PSYO1011 or PSYO1012, students must find a lab section that fits
with their schedule (i.e., does not create a course conflict). If you cannot find a lab
section that fits, register for any lab section with space and then contact the
course coordinator for assistance.
•
If registering for PSYO1031 or PSYO1032, students completing the course offcampus (more than 50km away from Dal) must find a proctor for their 3 exams.
Rules and regulations for proctors will be sent out to students enrolled in the
online courses, prior to their start dates.
•
