January/February 2016 Issue NACUC Celebrates 40 Years For four decades, the National Association of Credit Union Chairmen has been serving credit union volunteer leaders from across the United States and its territories. To commemorate this milestone, NACUC will be celebrating its 40th anniversary at the upcoming Chairmen's Roundtable Forum, October 5-8 in the historic city of Philadelphia. To learn more about NACUC and how it all began, read more here. An excerpt from "The Genesis of an Association: The NACUP Story": "It was in this state of mind that the NACUP founders set about to organize an exclusive national association of credit union presidents, specifically for chief elected officials. These credit union visionaries found that more was gleaned sitting at the dinner table, talking to their peers than from anything they could hear from the “experts” at the podium. Ernest Leslie, of Jax Navy, current member and 1st Vice President of the chartering group was recorded as saying, “There will be nothing fancy, no professional speakers, no high-paid entertainers, but what we do have is each other.” This premise gave birth to the roundtable dialogue where everyone had an equal say. Discussions often produced clear and concise options in addressing ones own problems." ___________________________________________________________________ Registration Opens for Leadership Development Seminar Spots are filling quickly to attend NACUC’s 2016 Leadership Development Seminar, May 22-24 in Scottsdale, Arizona. She served on her credit union board for 30 years, rarely missing a Chairmen’s Roundtable Forum. She was also involved in the Alaska Credit Union League and served as a member of CUNA’s Awards Committee. In 2005, Benson was honored by NACUC with the Eugene Ball Award. Each year, a scholarship is awarded to a credit union of limited means (under $25 million in assets) to attend the Leadership Development Seminar. This year’s Seminar is being held in Scottsdale, Arizona, May 22-24. If you know of a deserving credit union, invite them to apply online at the Leadership Development Seminar page, LDS Details. Watch for the scholarship recipient to be announced in mid-April. Is your credit union interested in contributing to the Norma Benson Scholarship Fund? Please email [email protected] to make a donation. _____________________________________________________________________ In a few short weeks, the NACUC Board will meet to plan this year’s Chairmen’s Roundtable Forum. This year NACUC is celebrating 40 years of providing education and networking to credit union volunteer leaders. Looking back on the last four decades, so much has changed in our credit union industry. What has not changed is the cooperation among our esteemed group of chairpersons, our unique roundtable format and our mission of providing the best education and training available to board leaders. Philadelphia, known as the City of Brotherly Love and one of only two World Heritage cities in the U.S., will serve as the perfect location to celebrate our momentous gathering. I invite you all to make plans to join us this Fall in Philadelphia. _____________________________________________________________________ Industry Links Follow the links below to get the latest news, trends and industry insights affecting your credit union: Governance and Strategic Planning The Problem of Director On-boarding Read more Staying Relevant in the Age of Disruption Read more Board-Level Checks and Balances Read more Economic Economic Outlook for 2016 Read More Branches: Fading Fast?
