Self-Directed Course: Transitional Math Module 3: Rounding Lesson #1: Rounding When rounding numbers look at the digit to the right of the requested digit to determine if you are going to round up or down. When we round numbers, there are three rules you must remember. 1) All the digits to the left or the rounding digit will always stay the same. 2) If the digit to the right is a 1, 2, 3, or 4 do not change the rounding digit. Anything to the right side will change to zero. 3) If the digit to the right is a 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 you change your rounding digit rounds up one number. Anything to the right side will change to zero. You still find the requested rounding digit, and look to the right of the requested digit to determine if you are going to round up or down. Remember that: 1) All the digits to the left or the rounding digit will always stay the same. 2) If the digit to the right is a 1, 2, 3, or 4 do not change the rounding digit. Anything to the right side will change to zero. 3) If the digit to the right is a 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 you change your rounding digit rounds up one number. Anything to the right side will change to zero or you can just leave it out. Sometimes numbers are written in words, and instead of using the word decimal, you can use the word “and”. For example: Ten and six tenths = 10.6 Five and forty-five hundredths = 5.45 Eight-teen and Forty-one thousandths = 18.041 Fifty-nine hundredths = 0.59 Three tenths = 0.3 Whenever numbers are written and the last word ends in “ths”, you will know that you’re dealing with a decimal number. For example: tenths, hundredths, and thousandths. to Write Decimal Numbers To write a fraction as a decimal number, look at the denominator (bottom number of a fraction) to determine what place value the numerator (top number) should be written in. For example: 10 = tenths 100 = hundredths 1000 = thousandths ଵ ଵ = ଵ = 0.7 ସ = 0.07 ଵ 2ଵ = 2.4 4 ଵ = 4.16 0.007 ଶ 4 ଵ = 4.027 Sometimes you will see fractions where the denominator is not 10, 100, or 1000. When this happens, simply change the bottom number by multiplying the denominator to make it into a 10, 100, or 1000. When you do this, make sure you do the same to the numerator. For example: 1) ଶ ହ ଶ௫ଶ ହ௫ଶ ସ = ଵ = 0.4 ଶ 2) 3 ସ ଶ ௫ ଶହ ହ 3 ସ ௫ ଶହ = 3 ଵ = 3.50 (make sure you include the zero because you’re dealing with the hundredths place value) ଵଶ 3) 4 ହ ଵଶ ௫ ଶ ଶସ 4 ହ ௫ ଶ = 4 ଵ = 4.24 Property of: Portage la Prairie School Division Self-Directed Course: Transitional Math Module 3: Rounding Assignment #3: Using Fractions to Write Decimal Numbers Write the decimal number for the following. ଵ 1) 4 ଶ 2) 5ଵ ଶ 3) 3ଵ ଷ 4) 4ଵ 5) 2ଵ ହ 6) 7ଵ ଽ 7) 8ଵ ଶ 8) 4ଵ ହ 9) 2ଵ ସ 10) 5ଵ ଷ ଵ ____________ 11) 3 ____________ 12) 2ଵ ____________ ____________ 13) ଵ ଵ ____________ ____________ 14) ଷଶ ଵ ____________ ____________ 15) ଵ ଵ ____________ ____________ 16) ଵ ____________ ____________ 17) ଷ ଵ ____________ ____________ 18) ଶ ଵ ____________ ____________ 19) ଷସ ଵ ____________ ____________ 20) ହ ଵ ____________ Property of: Portage la Prairie School Division ____________ Self-Directed Course: Transitional Math Module 3: Rounding 21) ଽଶ ଵ ____________ 32) 22) ଵ ____________ 33) 8ଵ ____________ 23) ଵ ଵ ____________ 34) 3 ଵ ____________ 24) ସ ଵ ____________ 35) 2ଵ 25) ହସ ଵ ____________ 36) 5ଵ 26) ଶ ଵ ____________ 37) 7ଵ 27) ଶ ଵ ____________ 38) 3ଵ 28) ସ଼ ଵ ____________ 39) 4ଵ 29) ଶ ଵ ____________ 40) 7ଵ 30) ଵ ଵ ____________ 41) 6ଵ 31) ଵ ____________ 42) 5ଵ Property of: Portage la Prairie School Division ସ ଵ ____________ ଶହ ଼ ଵଵ ହ ଵ ଼ହ ଵଶ ଶହ ____________ ____________ ____________ ____________ ____________ ____________ ____________ ____________ Self-Directed Course: Transitional Math Module 3: Rounding ଵସ 43) 3ଵ ଶସ 44) 7ଵ ହହ 45) 5ଵ ସ 46) 6ଵ ହ 47) 3ଵ ସଷ 48) 6ଵ ଵ 49) 5ଵ ଶ 50) 6ଵ ହ 51) 5ଵ ସହ 52) 4ଵ 53) ଷଵ ଵ ____________ 54) ଶଵ ହ ____________ ____________ 55) ହ ____________ ____________ 56) ଷ ଵ ____________ ____________ 57) ଵ ____________ ____________ 58) ହ ଵ ____________ ____________ 59) ସ ହ ____________ ____________ 60) ଵ ଶ ____________ ____________ 61) ଽଶ ଵ ____________ ____________ 62) ସ ଵ ____________ ____________ 63) ଶ ସ ____________ ____________ 64) ଷଷ ଵ ____________ Property of: Portage la Prairie School Division Self-Directed Course: Transitional Math Module 3: Rounding 65) ଶଶ ଶହ ____________ 76) 17 66) ଵ ଶହ ____________ 77) 14ଶ 67) ଶ଼ ଵ ____________ 78) 5ଶହ 68) ହ ଵ ____________ 79) 5ଶହ 69) ସ ହ ____________ 80) 6ହ 70) ଵ ଶହ ____________ 81) 6ଶହ 71) ଼ ଶହ ____________ 82) 6 72) ଷହ ଵ ____________ 83) 1ଶହ ____________ 84) 4ଶହ ____________ 85) 5ଵ ____________ 86) 6ଵ ଵ 73) 9 ହ ଶ 74) 4ଶହ ଷ 75) 3ଵ Property of: Portage la Prairie School Division ସଵ ଵ ସ ଵଶ ଷ଼ ଶସ ଼ଵ ଵ ଵଶ ଵ଼ ଵ ଼ହ ____________ ____________ ____________ ____________ ____________ ____________ ____________ ____________ ____________ ____________ ____________
