Display 3 red balloons.

Draw 3 circles using red/pink color and write 3 below the circles.
S ay: 3 red balloons
Now, display a green balloon.

Display all the balloons together.
A sk: How many balloons are there in total (altogether)?

S ay: 3 red (point towards the red balloons) and 1 green (point at
the green balloon) makes 4 balloons.

S ay: Let me write this on the board.
Draw 1 circle using green color, a little away from the red ones. Write 1 under
it. Write a big addition sign between the two sets of circles, so that it is
aligned with the numbers too.

S ay: Red balloons (point towards the red circles), green balloon
(point towards the green circle).
S ay (pointing at ‘+’): This is the addition sign. We need to add the
two numbers on either side of the addition sign. So, we add 3 and 1.
Three red balloons and one green balloon. What do we get by adding
3 and 1? (Show them the balloons)

S ay: Yes, 4. Let me write this sentence now.
Write ‘= 4’ and complete the earlier sentence on the board (use a big ‘=’ sign).
S ay: This is the ‘equals’ sign.
Rewrite the sentence 3 + 1 = 4, read it aloud and ask the class to repeat after
you.
Read the sentence as 3 red and 1 green balloons make 4 balloons altogether.

The goal of the episode is to practice addition with numbers 0-5 and learn to
write addition sentences up to 5.

Point at the number sentence.
S ay: To complete the number sentence, we need to add the two
types of robots. There are 2
robots and 1
robot, which
makes 3 robots altogether. 2 + 1 is already mentioned in the number
sentence. We need to fill in the total number of robots. By adding 2
and 1 we get the total 3. We need to write 3 after the equals sign to
complete the number sentence. To write 3, click on the blue block
after the ‘equals’ sign.
Show the students how to insert their answer in the input box.
S ay: All the robots go in the spaceship and the spaceship takes off.
S ay: In case your answer is incorrect, the sentence will wiggle and
the blue block will turn red.

Discuss the strategies that the students developed while adding given digits.
Write a random addition equation up to 5, on board and ask if it is correct.
Example: 1 + 2 = 3
Write another addition equation up to 5, but with an incorrect answer and ask
if it is correct.
Example: 1 + 3 = 5
Encourage them to formulate questions and ask you for answers and they
can tell if it was right or wrong.
Involve as many students as possible in this activity.
