Canterbury Legal Walk – Saturday 13th June

Canterbury Legal Walk – Saturday 13th June 2015
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to be a legal professional to take part?
No, anybody is welcome to join the walk as long as they are fit and healthy enough to do so. Dogs
are permitted providing they are kept on a lead at all times.
How many people do I need in my team? Can I take part individually?
There is no minimum or maximum number for a team. Individual participants are most welcome and
can join other walkers on the day if they wish.
How much does it cost to take part in the walk?
It is free to register however we ask that each participant pledges to raise as much money as they can
for the Kent Law Campaign.
When will I receive my sponsorship pack?
Sponsorship packs will be sent out in early 2015 however please feel free to create your online
fundraising page and start fundraising before then.
How much money do I need to raise?
As we are raising funds to improve the facilities of the Kent Law Clinic to enable us to provide more
free legal advice to our local community, we encourage each participant to try to raise at least £50.
The University of Kent will match each pound you raise with another so if you raise £50 and it is
eligible for Gift Aid, your gift will become £125!
What will happen if I don’t reach the target?
If you are unable to hit this target there are many other ways in which you can raise money to
maximise your donation to the Kent Law Campaign such as holding a cake stall, organising a bring
and buy sale, hosting a film night for family and friends or holding an auction of promises – the list is
endless! Please see our Fundraising Hints and Tips leaflet for inspiration. If you cannot raise this
figure, please do not worry, any donation is greatly appreciated.
How do I collect my sponsorship money?
Paper sponsorship forms will be included in your sponsor pack however we do encourage participants
to set up an online giving page for ease. Please create your page by visiting www.justgiving.com/ukdt.
Either way, please ensure your sponsors allow us to claim Gift Aid if they are UK tax payers so we
can claim an extra 25% on top of their gift. A donation of £10 will become £12.50 with Gift Aid, so
including the University’s match this makes a grand total of £25!
When do I need to give you my sponsorship money?
All sponsorship money will be due four weeks after the event (Friday 10th July 2015). Please send a
cheque made payable to the University of Kent for the attention of Felicity Clifford in the freepost
envelope provided in your sponsor pack along with your completed sponsor forms. Alternatively you
can bring cash to pay in on the day at the Donation Station in the marquee however please note this
will close at 4pm.
Will you acknowledge my fundraising efforts?
Once all your sponsorship money has been received you will be sent a certificate detailing how much
you raised individually or as a team for the Kent Law Campaign.
Where will the walk take place?
The walk will begin outside the marquee and will take you on a tour of campus and the city of
Canterbury, taking in beautiful views, woodland, the river, historical landmarks and other places of
interest. We hope you enjoy what our city has to offer. A route map is included in the sponsor pack
and each participant will be given another copy on the day when they register.
How fit do I need to be?
This 10km (6.2 mile) route is suitable for all fitness levels however please be aware that there are
several steep hills in places. Should you be feeling energetic, you are most welcome to run the
course however please be aware that the route crosses several public roads so please take care.
How long will it take me to walk 10km?
We estimate that the walk will take you between 1.5 and 3 hours. You can walk it as fast or as slow
as you like, there is no rush!
When does the walk start?
The official start time is 3.00pm when the lead walkers set off however teams can begin the walk at
any time between 3.00pm and 4.00pm on Saturday 13th June 2015.
What happens if I get lost en route?
There will be many marshals on the route to direct you and answer any questions you may have.
Please note that the last team will set off on the walk at 4.00pm and the marshals will leave their
station once this group goes past.
What should I wear and bring with me?
Please ensure you wear comfortable walking shoes or trainers suitable for the distance. A Kent Law
Campaign t-shirt will be sent to you two weeks before the event and we ask that you wear this on the
day so that our marshals know to cheer you on!
Please feel free to bring anything else with you that that you feel will aid your personal comfort on the
day. You might consider a fleece/jacket, sun cream, a hat, rain coat, snacks (you will be provided with
a bottle of water when you register), plasters and of course, a camera so that you can enter our
photographic competition!
What facilities will be available on the day?
Registration will take place in a marquee on the Senate Lawn on the University of Kent’s Canterbury
campus and toilet facilities are available within the Templeman Library and the Senate Building. Along
the route there are public toilet facilities available and the route will go past several restaurants and
public houses which may allow you to use their facilities.
Personal items may be left in the marquee at the owner’s own risk, but we advise you not to leave any
items of value.
Will there be First Aid available?
First Aid cover will be provided and will be located on the Senate lawn in front of the library and near
the half-way point. Should you require medical assistance at any point, please make a marshal
aware and they will seek first aid support for you.
Will there be photographers on the day?
Each team will be able to have an official photograph taken with The Rt Hon Lord Clarke of Stonecum-Ebony, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, before they set off on the walk.
There will also be several photographers along the route, don’t forget to wave and smile at them!
These photographs will be available to download from our website shortly after the event.
Please remember to take some of your own photographs during the walk and share them with us
afterwards as part of our photography competition. You can also Tweet your photographs to
@KentLawCampaign using #canterburylegalwalk.
What do I do once I finish the walk?
Once you arrive back on campus and cross the finish line you will be presented with a medal and
given a token for a free drink. You can then make your way to the marquee where you can listen to
some live music and have a much needed rest before joining us for the Post-Walk Celebration Party!
What is the Post-Walk Celebration Party?
To mark the University of Kent’s 50th Anniversary and to congratulate those who have taken part in
the Canterbury Legal Walk, the Kent Law Campaign and the Kent Law School will host a celebration
party in the marquee featuring live bands, barbeque and cash bar. We invite all participants and our
alumni to join us for all or some of the party to celebrate their achievements at the walk as well as the
University’s special anniversary. The event will close at 11.30pm.
What happens if the event is cancelled?
In the event that we are forced to postpone the walk we will contact team leaders to inform them of
our decision and will update them with the rescheduled date once this has been agreed.
Are there other ways in which I can be involved if I choose not to take part in the walk?
If walking is not your thing then please consider joining our team of marshals to help out on the day.
We need the support of many people so would love you to join our team!
