Happy New Year! I cannot believe that it is 2009. It actually got me thinking of an old PRINCE song called 1999
(which came out in 1983) and how when I was a
teenager (A long time ago) 1999 seemed like forever
away and here it is 2009! The older I get the faster it
flies…time that is! 2008 was very a successful year for
MYSB and we are grateful to all the families, businesses,
residents, and of course the kids for helping to make it
such a great year! Each year it seems as though we are
able to accomplish a little more and that is a sign of
excellent progress and dedication. I am hopeful that
2009 will see as much progress and good fortune.
Though the economic climate is tough and things are
and will continue to be on the tough side, I think that we
need to focus on that which is positive in our lives and be
thankful for the other things that we so often take for
granted like family, good friends and good health.
January is a relatively quiet month here at MYSB as we
try and unwind from the busyness of the last few months
of 2008’s constant activity and events! However we do
celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day this month, a man
who is remembered as one of the greatest advocates for
peace and equality in American history. This January is
sort of special as ironically on the day after MLK Day,
America will swear in the first African American President
as Barack Obama becomes our 44th United States
President. Now that is progress at its best! February
promises to be a bit busier so keep your eyes and ears
open for upcoming events! Be careful out there, dress
warm, drive slow, and take care. Have a Joyous January!

December hasn’t really been a busy month. In
November the firsts quarter came to close and
we started out second quarter. Last week our
grades closed and our progress reports came
out. Once we return to school after winter break
we will have two weeks and then mid-terms
start, marking the half way point on the year!
Recently all the winter sports started. Basketball
& wrestling have been going for a few weeks
now. Also, at the beginning of December, the
Drama Program held its auditions for Beauty &
the Beast. Rehearsals and practices are starting
soon for drama and sports! And we are looking
forward to a great winter season!!

Murphy Elementary- Morgan MarcAurele
Well everyone has been anxiously anticipating our
first snow day. The weather has been really funny,
warm one day and bitter cold the next. I think all of
us are ready for our upcoming winter break. Yeah!
We have had a book fair and holiday bazaar at school
which allowed many of us to shop without our parents
for holiday gifts and things for ourselves. They had a
variety of items with prices we could afford from .25
cents to the most expensive was $15.00. I have also
noticed and heard students talking about the new
snacks and ice cream treats like, pretzel pizza and
pizza fries. I know parents were disappointed because our chorus and band concert originally scheduled for December 17th, had to be rescheduled for a
later date next year. However, I am sure it will be
worth the wait. The Murphy Staff has released the
tally for last month’s fundraising efforts with our annual Care & Share canned food drive and this year students contributed over 878 canned goods. YEAH!
Awesome Job! I am also happy to report that our 5th.
Grade basketball team has been assembled for both
the boys and girls teams and has just wrapped up our
last practice and is looking forward to our first game
on January 5th. against Mohegan.
WELCOME 2009!!!!
December went out with a bang! On December 23 we
had a half day. It was also our first dress down day of
the year. Along with that we had our annual Student VS.
Faculty basketball game. one event that is coming up
this month is up this month is our winter pep rally. The
junior class officers along with the junior class and faculty is sponsoring this event. There are many fun filled
activities planned for that afternoon. Also when we return the sophomores and juniors will be returning to
shop after a very short 4 1/2 day academic cycle due to
the weather that we had during December This also
means that the seniors and freshman will be returning
to academics after a very short shop cycle. On January
15 all of the winter sports teams will be getting there
team picture done between the hours of 1:30 and 4:30.
This will include the following sports: Rifle, Indoor
Track, Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball, and Cheerleading. We will not have school on January 19th because it
is Martin Luther King JR. Day. And last but not least
there will be a half day on the 30th of January. I hope
that everyone enjoys the beginning of a new year!!!

JASMINE LOY SMITH
In her first year in the ASP Jasmine has already become one of our
shining stars! Jasmine is quiet at first, but warms up quickly and still
laughs at the staff’s jokes! Jasmine enjoys hanging out with friends
and playing on the computer! She spends time each day completing
homework and snacking before heading out the door to gymnastics
practice! She is a wonderful part of the program!
Keep up the good work, Jasmine!!
I love driving through my neighborhood during
the winter and seeing all the snowmen that the
kids have built during their “SNOWDAY!” and
thought about how much fun I used to have
making snowman! So in honor of the beloved
snowman, here are some step by step instructions on how to build the perfect one!
Step 5: Repeat for the mid-section and head.
The bottom should be the biggest ball, and the
top should be the smallest.
Step 6: Pack extra snow in between the sections to keep it together. Place sticks down the
center if your snowman is having a hard time
standing up.
Step 7: Give the snowman a face. Use coal,

Korner! Answers can be submitted at the Kid Trivia bulletin board at the Youth
Center! If you are the grand prize winner, you will receive $25 in kid kash, which
for Kid Trivia only, you can purchase a PIZZA from Friendly’s! Everyone who enters
and gets the question correct will earn $10 in Kid Kash!
Each person can enter one time per month! Spelling counts, use your resources, including the internet and make sure you put your name on your entry!! Good Luck!!
