A Publication of the Montville Youth Service Bureau Monthly Newsletter www.montvilleyouth.org Montville Youth Service Bureau 289 Route 32 Uncasville, CT 06382 January 2009 Volume 11 Direct Dialog Happy New Year! I cannot believe that it is 2009. It actually got me thinking of an old PRINCE song called 1999 (which came out in 1983) and how when I was a teenager (A long time ago) 1999 seemed like forever away and here it is 2009! The older I get the faster it flies…time that is! 2008 was very a successful year for MYSB and we are grateful to all the families, businesses, residents, and of course the kids for helping to make it such a great year! Each year it seems as though we are able to accomplish a little more and that is a sign of excellent progress and dedication. I am hopeful that 2009 will see as much progress and good fortune. Though the economic climate is tough and things are and will continue to be on the tough side, I think that we need to focus on that which is positive in our lives and be thankful for the other things that we so often take for granted like family, good friends and good health. January is a relatively quiet month here at MYSB as we try and unwind from the busyness of the last few months of 2008’s constant activity and events! However we do celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day this month, a man who is remembered as one of the greatest advocates for peace and equality in American history. This January is sort of special as ironically on the day after MLK Day, America will swear in the first African American President as Barack Obama becomes our 44th United States President. Now that is progress at its best! February promises to be a bit busier so keep your eyes and ears open for upcoming events! Be careful out there, dress warm, drive slow, and take care. Have a Joyous January! Recently all the winter sports started. Basketball & wrestling have been going for a few weeks now. Also, at the beginning of December, the Drama Program held its auditions for Beauty & the Beast. Rehearsals and practices are starting soon for drama and sports! And we are looking forward to a great winter season!! Tyl Middle School—Vinessa Cedio We hope that everyone had a safe and Happy New Year! Welcome 2009! Murphy Elementary- Morgan MarcAurele Well everyone has been anxiously anticipating our first snow day. The weather has been really funny, warm one day and bitter cold the next. I think all of us are ready for our upcoming winter break. Yeah! We have had a book fair and holiday bazaar at school which allowed many of us to shop without our parents for holiday gifts and things for ourselves. They had a variety of items with prices we could afford from .25 cents to the most expensive was $15.00. I have also noticed and heard students talking about the new snacks and ice cream treats like, pretzel pizza and pizza fries. I know parents were disappointed because our chorus and band concert originally scheduled for December 17th, had to be rescheduled for a later date next year. However, I am sure it will be worth the wait. The Murphy Staff has released the tally for last month’s fundraising efforts with our annual Care & Share canned food drive and this year students contributed over 878 canned goods. YEAH! Awesome Job! I am also happy to report that our 5th. Grade basketball team has been assembled for both the boys and girls teams and has just wrapped up our last practice and is looking forward to our first game on January 5th. against Mohegan. I love driving through my neighborhood during the winter and seeing all the snowmen that the kids have built during their “SNOWDAY!” and thought about how much fun I used to have making snowman! So in honor of the beloved snowman, here are some step by step instructions on how to build the perfect one! Step 5: Repeat for the mid-section and head. The bottom should be the biggest ball, and the top should be the smallest. Step 6: Pack extra snow in between the sections to keep it together.
