A
Christian community building lives of faith and service for Jesus Christ through life-transforming worship, learning, and service.
Holy Week & Easter Again,
For The First Time
If anyone is in Christ, that person is a new creation; everything old
has passed away... 2 Corinthians 5.17
Dr. Bill Morgan, Senior Pastor
A few years ago, theologian Marcus Borg surfaced the again for the first time phrase for
experiences of faith and life. I recall the life moment when reading Jesus’ parable of the Prodigal
Son again, I realized I now see it more from the eyes of the father than the son. Living document
though the Bible is, it doesn’t change; we do. Birth of another child, new job, etc. are both beenthere - done-that AND whoosh, this-is-different deals.
The New Testament has two words for ‘time’; chronos and kairos. And for ‘new’; neos and kainos.
There is tiring, repetitive clock time AND there is God’s wow, now-or-never, use-it or lose-it time to
speak up, give generously, love/forgive. There are so-called new Botox/reshape-the-chrome deals AND
God’s new creation, never-before changes in us. We experience life, and others experience us, now
more as joy giving than joy sapping.
So, I pray for us all a Holy Week/Easter again that helps us re-set our lives…
But also for a first time at this time in our lives that God new-sets our hearts.

Spring Sharing
Carpenter’s Hands
Spring is here! Many of us use this time of year to vacation during spring break or simply enjoy the sunshine
and nice weather. But what about a time to share your talents and to serve others? Where does that fit into
your spring schedule?
Philippians 2:4 says, “Do not merely look out for your own
personal interests, but also for the interests of others.”
Volunteering with Carpenter’s Hands is a great way to
enjoy the warming weather while improving the situation of those in need. There
are so many different ways to utilize your skills and talents through Carpenter’s
Hands. If you don’t feel like you can volunteer to do physical labor, come and
visit with the homeowner. Or, you could donate a blanket or baked item for our
crew to pass along to the homeowner. Help send birthday cards to our clients.
You could also volunteer to build cabinets and vanities at our warehouse.
Maybe Saturday workdays seem too long or you have other obligations that day. With birthday parties, sporting events and other
activities, Saturdays can get pretty full. That’s OK, we will work out a time for you to come and work on projects at the church
sometime during the week. Many of our items, such as wheelchair ramps, need prep work before we can install them at the site. Just
let us know how you would like to help. We will definitely find something for you!
If you are getting ready for the “spring cleaning” time, please consider donating items to the Carpenter’s Hands. We could always use
tools and building supplies. Sometimes we know of specific homeowners that might need furniture or appliances.
Should you, your Sunday school class, friends, office or organization like to volunteer with Carpenter’s Hands, we meet every
Monday-Thursday by the Canterbury parking deck at 8:15 a.m. Please let us know when you are able to volunteer so we can plan
accordingly to best utilize your skills. All you need to bring is a sack lunch and a servant’s heart. There are two Saturday workdays
this month – March 2 and 16. If you have a group that would like to volunteer on a different date, please contact us. We will work
something out. For questions or to volunteer, contact Adam Guthrie at [email protected] or call 205-999-3963.

New Team Needs Help
Worship Notes
Every year we average forty Canterbury members leaving us to join the Communion of Saints. We are rethinking how
to best serve these families as they plan and carry out the celebration of life. Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it
takes a team to assist families in the funeral journey. It is not an easy task but can be quite a privilege to serve.
To form the team we need both men and women who have both a passion for serving people and some flexibility
of commitments. Areas for which the team would be responsible are: making sure the Altar is prepared; acting
as host/hostess in the parlor as the family gathers and during visiting times; and greeter/ushers in the Sanctuary,
Chapel or Canterbury Center areas.
If you are interested in this new service opportunity or want more information, please contact Carolyn Davis at
874-1525 or email her at [email protected].
Palm Crosses
The Altar Guild recently decided to help support missionary efforts in Africa by purchasing palm crosses for
our Palm Sunday Service. If you would like to make a donation to this mission effort, please send your send your
check to Carolyn Davis at the church.

Consider Yourself Invited!
O u t r e a ch /M i s s i o n s
It’s human nature to desire to be wanted, to be needed, to be includedespecially at church. We all seek a personal closeness with God as well as
the fellowship with other Christians. The best way to begin this journey
is to get involved. You may be waiting for someone to personally invite
you to participate in a project or to join a group. Well, we want you to consider this as your
invitation to join us in The Brown Bag Project! Here is what we encourage you to do — look
deeper into your soul and tap into the essence of who you are. Maybe there are parts of you that are lying dormant, making
you afraid to “live out loud!” For example, maybe you love singing, dancing, creating something or making another person
feel loved in a special way — whatever it is —YOU have a gift. Jump on in with us and let your passion see the light of day!
Share it with us. Brown Bag clients need you. The personal closeness you yearn for will simply wrap you up like a present!
For more information about the possibilities at Brown Bag,

United Methodist Women News
Marching Through March!
March is the month that roars in like a lion and out like a lamb. It is home
to March Madness, the change back to Daylight Savings time, St. Patrick’s
Day green, Lent, and this year, Palm Sunday, and Easter. The weather is
ever changing, and we try to go someplace warm for Spring Break. March
will also be the time that the United Methodist Women of Canterbury will
sponsor a non-event fundraiser—a virtual fundraiser where you will not be
asked to work, sell tickets, cook, or attend an event. YOUR donations will
allow us to meet the need for continuing financial support to sustain the
mission and outreach work of the Canterbury United Methodist Women.
As a result of our fundraising efforts
last year, the UMW was able to
offer support to Stop Hunger Now,
Camp Sumatanga, Highlands UMC
Community
Outreach
Ministry,
Methodist Home for the Aging
(Fairhaven), McCoy Adult Daycare
Center, Heart Gallery Alabama, UMC
Promise Homes, UMW Relief – Haiti Project, STAIR (Reading/Tutoring
program), and Operation Classroom in Liberia, just to name a few. Our
members also participated in Stop Hunger Now, Festival of Three Kings,
Fairhaven Fall Frolic, Highlands Methodist Homeless Outreach Ministry,
Brown Bag Hospitality, and BHN activities.
NOW would be a very special time for you to consider making a significant
gift for the work of United Methodist Women. Our ministries with
women, children and youth are always working to use your monetary gifts
to transform lives and change the world. No one of us can do everything
or go everywhere, but together United Methodist Women can do a great
number of things and go anywhere that God leads us.
On a recent trip to south Alabama I saw the following sign in front of a
small country church and I thought it appropriate for what our United
Methodist Women attempt to do in the world.

God’s Plan for SALVATION
As United Methodist Women, we try to carry out God’s Plan for Salvation
by participating, praying, attending, and giving. We follow God’s plan
by serving and advocating and bringing our whole selves to the work of
addressing the real needs of women and children around the corner and
around the world. We hope that ALL who attend Canterbury will help in
providing funds for our missions….. And in our efforts to try GPS!

devotions are written by either staff, volunteers or students. Rallying youth and parents alike to join us on this
amazing journey through the book that shapes our lives and our faith in 2013!
Discovery 13 Recap
Discovery 2013 was an incredible retreat where 200 students encountered God through
our community, service and study of Micah 6:8. Through the weekend, we had five
incredible Sr. High speakers, Miller Sisson, Patrick Hereford, Ben Carter, Laurie Akin
and Ann Sisson, lead us through our passage in worship. The students, as well as 30
other adults, also served in the Avondale community for two hours on Saturday cleaning
the warehouse, sorting goods and clearing out abandoned lots in the community. The
pinnacle of the weekend was the final worship service with parents on Saturday night. With close to 500 in
attendance, parents and their children worshipped, received communion, and learned together. We cannot
say enough about how impressive our Jr. Highs were, the inspiring leadership of our Sr. High, the relational
engagement of our Adult Small Group leaders, and the servanthood of our other adult leaders. We also want to
give a special thanks to Alice Womack who organized our mission component and Camille Crocker who is the
amazing coordinator for this entire retreat. Great job everyone! MARK YOUR CALENDAR NOW—Discovery

Young Adult Ministry
More and more young adults are attending Canterbury’s New Member class
called “Beginnings.” When the class launched a few years ago, a few 22-35 yearolds took part. Now the class is showing a strong representation from this age
demographic at each quarterly event. “Beginnings” is even further evidence that
young adults are finding a spiritual home here. They are drawn to our short-term
groups that focus on marriage, on finances, or an introduction to the Bible. Our
