Do a waste assessment
What is in your garbage? Could some of
it be recycled? How full is your garbage
container on collection day? How much
do you pay for garbage service?
Evaluate and communicate
What barriers are there to decreasing your
amount of garbage? Is your company’s
staff aware of the recycling process you
have in place? Are contractors, including
janitorial staff, aware? Discuss your
garbage composition with your recycling
service provider or call other recycling
vendors to determine if material in your
garbage is valuable to someone else.
Take action
Ensure there are desk-side containers
for paper. Are there containers available
in common areas such as break rooms
and copy-machine areas? Educate staff
and conduct an awareness campaign.
Continue to monitor your garbage and
recycling service levels. Decrease your
garbage service as you increase your
recycling rate.
