Dangerous Ends
April 2017
Polis Books**
Dangerous Ends finds Pete Fernandez up against a more complex threat, as
he tries to shake off the demons haunting Miami’s own sordid past.
Pete Fernandez has settled into an easy, if somewhat boring life as a PI. He takes
pictures of cheating husbands, tracks criminals who‘ve skipped bail and attends
weekly AA meetings. When his partner Kathy Bentley approaches him with a
potential new client, Pete balks. Not because he doesn‘t need the money, but
because the case involves Gaspar Varela, a former Miami police officer serving a
life sentence for the murder of his wife—one of the most infamous crimes in Miami
history. The client? None other than Varela‘s daughter, Maya, who‘s doggedly
supported her father‘s claims of innocence.
Also available:
As Pete and Kathy wade into the case, they find themselves in the crosshairs of
Los Enfermos, a bloodthirsty gang of pro-Castro killers and drug dealers looking to
wipe Pete off the Miami map. As they get closer to the truth, they find it entangled
in something even older—a bloody, political hit ordered by Fidel Castro himself,
that left a still-healing scar on Pete—and his dead father‘s—past.

Graffiti Palace is Homer’s Odyssey set during the Watts riots in Los Angeles
during the summer of 1965.
Our Odysseus is Americo Monk, an African-American semiologist studying and
documenting graffiti symbols when he gets caught in the riot, and returning home
to his Penelope becomes impossible. Since Monk understands and documents the
gang symbols and tags, he becomes the person who everyone—LAPD and
gangsters alike—wants. And each monster he encounters and has to outwit
(Scylla and Charybdis, the Sirens) follows an episode in the Odyssey mutated to
black Los Angeles in 1965.

The novel is full of unexpected historical references: Tokyo Rose was living in
Watts during the riots, Gene Roddenberry was Chief Parker‘s right hand at the
LAPD before he created Star Trek, The Sound of Music and Godard‘s Alphaville
were playing simultaneously in theaters. Mixing the history of LA gangs from the
zoot suit riots of the 1940‘s with the actual events that started the Watts riots, and
wild scenes like the filming a Godzilla movie downtown in the midst of the violence,
and the invention of slurpies at 7-11, Lombardo creates a wild ride full of twists,
turns and humor. Graffiti Palace is a stunning debut written in startling vivid
language with enormous relevance to today‘s troubled world.

―Like Montaigne, Moor writes about one subject as a way of touching on 100
others. On Trails considers Greek mythology and the origins of life, the intricacy of
caterpillar nests and the stealth of elephants. He‘s a philosopher on foot.‖
—The Wall Street Journal
―You might think of Robert Moor as the Roger Angell of trail-walking. Just as
Angell‘s reports on specific baseball games segue effortlessly into reflections on
the venerable sport itself, so Moor looks up from whatever trail he may be on to see

Adventures at the Wild Edges
of Our Dangerous, Changing
Planet
“[John All is] a badass for science.”—Adam Frank, NPR
In May 2014, the mountaineer and scientist John All plunged into a crevasse in the
Himalayas, a fall that all but killed him. Yet this brush with death is only the latest of
John All‘s adventures. Icefall is a gripping adventure memoir with profound lessons
for how humans will adjust as our world continues to change beneath our feet.
―John All treads the delicate knife-edge between adventure and climate science in
this gripping account of his work in some of the world‘s most dangerous and remote
places. He makes a passionate and powerful case for human adaptation and
resilience in the face of climate change. His optimism, from someone who has been
there and done that, comes across loud and clear. In this book, climate change is
not just politics—it‘s avalanches and huge snakes and getting lost in the desert.”
—Brian Fagan, distinguished emeritus professor of anthropology, University of
California, Santa Barbara, and author of The Great Warming
―[John All] is one part climate scientist and two parts extreme mountaineer.‖
—Nate Blakeslee, author of Tulia: Race, Cocaine, and Corruption in a Small Texas

―John All‘s passion for adventure is matched only by his sharp insight and deep
knowledge of environmental science. This important book tells the story of one
man‘s crusade—through jungles, over mountains, and deep into the ice—to bring
about change that could save millions of lives.‖—Carlos Buhler, winner of the

The Grim Sleeper:
June 2017
Counterpoint Press
The Lost Women of South
Central
The definitive book on the biggest homicide case in Los Angeles history told
by the fearless reporter who broke the story
Christine Pelisek—petite, blonde, Canadian—seems the least likely reporter to
have broken the story on the longest running serial killer west of the Mississippi.
But in 2008 she did just that with her cover story for LA Weekly, shedding light on
a suspected killer of women in South Central Los Angeles who had been active
since the 1980s. Dubbing him ―The Grim Sleeper‖ for his possible long break
between murders, Christine put the pieces together after the L.A. coroner
reluctantly handed her a list in 2006 of thirty-eight possibly linked homicides.
Feature story on the author
and the case in PEOPLE
Magazine
Serial killer Lonnie Franklin Jr. lived in South Central Los Angeles in the same
neighborhood where his victims were found. He was a husband, a father, and
neighborhood fixture. Franklin was convicted of ten murders, but investigators
believe he is responsible for far more. The victims were all women; some
prostitutes or drug addicts discarded like trash during a time the city was overrun
with crime, drugs, and racial strife.
The Grim Sleeper captures a singular case but also tells a bigger story: about
urban homicide investigations in areas beset by poverty and gang violence; about
how a serial killer could continue his macabre work for so long in part due to
society‘s lack of concern for his victims; and about the power and tenacity of those
who refused to let the case go cold. Like Katherine Boo‘s Beyond the Beautiful
Forevers and Jill Leovy‘s Ghettoside, Pelisek gives voice to those without one.
―But that the terrible, slow-motion slaughter even became known to the public
owes to the obsessive reporting of Pelisek, a star investigative reporter.‖

―Britt Collins's accessible and empathetic new book, Strays, portrays the close
