In her new role, Mary will serve as a liaison between the GSC classified staff and the Advisory Council and College Board. She will also serve in an ex-officio capacity on the GSC Classified Staff Council, bringing information from both WV ACCE and the College Governing Board. Mary works in the Academic Support Center, which is located in the College’s Robert F. Kidd Library. She and her husband, Robert, reside in Troy. They have one son, James, who is currently a student at GSC. Stormy Dillon Amos (’03) is Cemetery Administrator at WV Memorial Gardens, Inc. She and her husband, Brian, reside in Craigsville. Janice Collins Bailey (’68) retired from Lewis County Board of Education in January 2003 after teaching English 9-12 and Speech at Lewis County High School for 30½ years. She and her husband, Samuel, reside in Weston. Lisa Bailey (’97) is a Business Analyst for the Design Engineering Center of Excellence with Bank of America in Charlotte, North Carolina. She enjoys riding her sports bike and attending NASCAR races. Lisa also manages the Team Bank of America volleyball league with over 500 yearly participants and in 2003 built a house within the city limits of Charlotte. She teaches at Calhoun Middle/High School. Vickie and her husband, Larry (‘88), have one son, William. They reside in Grantsville. Sterling Beane, Sr. (’70) was named recipient of the honorary Wayne Underwood Award at this year’s annual Little Kanawha Conference in Parkersburg. The award goes to the Conference Coach of the Year selected from all sports in the twelve-school conference. Sterling has taught and coached at Braxton County High School for the past 34 years and is the first coach from Braxton County to win this award. Also in June 2004, he received notification that the West Virginia Athletic Coaches Association was honoring him for the sixth time in his career as “Regional Wrestling Coach of the Year”. This second honor was received since the National Federation of High School Coaches Association had named him “West Virginia High School Wrestling Coach of the Year” in February 2004. Sterling and his wife, Judy (’86), reside in Gassaway. Ida Moyers Bender (’42) retired in 1980 as a Media Specialist for Hillsborough Co., FL. She lives in Plant City, Florida. Gary Blake (’67) was inducted into Glenville State College’s Curtis Elam Athletic Hall of Fame on April 24, 2004. Remembered as one of the premier golfers in the WVIAC, he went on to enjoy a successful career as a club pro. Gary claims residences in both North Carolina and in Ripley, WV where he and his nephew own a golf course. He was accompanied to this historic event by his wife, Claudia; mother, Thelma and a host of other relatives and well-wishers. Eloise Boggs (‘47) retired on December 31, 2003 from the West Virginia State Hygienic Laboratory in Charleston as its Associate Director. Her retirement marked more than 50 years of public service; 32 with the WV Bureau of Public Health, 19 at the University of Massachusetts – Amherst and 2½ teaching in Clay County elementary schools. At her recent retirement party, Ken Heckler, former West Virginia Congressman and Secretary of State, presented her with the Governor’s Certificate of Merit. With family interests, some traveling, and involvement in several historical societies, Eloise plans to stay busy. David Boso (’67) has retired from teaching art for Marietta City Schools. He is the owner of Dave’s Marine in Belpre, Ohio and tells us that this marks his 37th year in the Marine Business. He and his wife, Linda, reside in Belpre and are very proud of their four grandchildren, Aaron, Megan, Kaitlyn and Michaela, who are, as he says, “all Bosos’. Billy Burke (’77) and Dr. James “Jim” Butcher (’53) were jointly honored at a regular monthly meeting of the Gilmer County Masonic Lodge in Glenville on April 13, 2004. Both individuals were presented certificates memorializing their 50 years of membership in the Glenville-based lodge. Billy is a long time civic leader, merchant, and farmer in Gilmer County having served as a West Virginia Legislator, Director of the West Virginia Regional Jail and Corrections Authority, and with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Jim has served as a teacher and principal in the Webster County School System, Assistant Superintendent of Grant County Schools, taught in higher education at Shepherd College and at the American University in Washington, D.C. He assumed the Presidency of Shepherd College in 1968 and remained in that position until his retirement in 1989. He holds a master’s degree from West Virginia University and a doctoral degree from American University. Billy and wife, Marjorie Hardman Burke (’53), reside in Sand Fork. Jim and wife, Evelyn Roe Butcher (’54), live in Shepherdstown. Evelyn Keith Burke (’36) recently celebrated her 90th birthday with family and friends. She lives in Weston and was a teacher in Gilmer and Lewis Counties until her retirement in the 1980’s. Bayward Butler (’47) serves as Chairman of the Elk Conservation District and received the coveted Carroll Greene Supervisor of the Year Award for 2003 with his outstanding job promoting wise soil and water resource conservation and development in his own local Conservation District. He is a retired teacher from Braxton County Schools. He and his wife, Mary, reside in Exchange. Dr. Kathy Poling Butler (‘76) was named Vice President of Academic Affairs at GSC effective July 1, 2004. She continues to serve in the role that she filled in an interim capacity during the July 2003 – June 2004 academic year. She will also continue in her position as Registrar and Director of Institutional Research for the College. Kathy resides in Normantown with her husband, Rick (’74), who serves as superintendent of Ritchie County Schools. They have three children: Michael, Jennifer and Allison. Anna J. Carpenter (‘95), ProStart Instructor at Webster County High School, was selected as West Virginia’s 2004 Outstanding ProStart Teacher of the Year. Anna and her husband, Wesley, reside in Webster Springs. Gailey Carpenter (’58) lives in The Villages, Florida with his wife, Carol and is president of West Virginia University’s Florida Mountaineer Club. He is retired from his College Chaplain’s position were he worked at New York State. Kevin Carpenter (‘87) was named the West Virginia Tax Department’s Employee of the Year for 2003. He and his wife, Dorreen, live in Sutton with their three children, Juston, Lauren and Westley. Herbert (’55) and June Harris Collins (’55) retired from the Fayette County Board of Education in 1987. They both started their teaching careers in one-room schools and have seventy-one years of teaching experience between them. They have three sons: Mark, Eric and Jerome and four granddaughters. Jason Collins (’04) has returned home to his Baldwin residence in Gilmer County after nearly two months of travel throughout his ancestral land in Ireland. Patrick Corcoran (’03) is working for the Coal Heritage Highway Authority in Beckley as an Americorps worker. Warren (’48) and Ella Fitzwater Cox (’66) are both retired from careers in education and travel five to six months of the year. They reside in Plantation, Florida when they aren’t traveling. They have two adult children, Sharyn “Sheri” and Ed. Col. Charles Curry (‘50) was honored as Normantown High School’s 2004 Alumnus of the Year at their annual reunion in May 2004. He has retired from a very distinguished military career and lives in Haymarket, Virginia, with his wife, Maxine Robertson Curry. They are the parents of three sons: Chuck, Chris and Craig and have three grandsons. Steve Datcher (’73) was inducted into Glenville State College’s Curtis Elam Athletic Hall of Fame on April 24, 2004. Remembered as a basketball great during the “Lilly Era”, Steve resides in Waldorf, Maryland and was accompanied to this historic event by his son, Steven Trent. Shirley Miller Dawson (’96), Human Resources Manager of the Goodrich Corporation’s Hodges, South Carolina facility, earned her certification as Senior Professional in Human Resources on May 1, 2004. This certification, awarded by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) is their highest level of certification. Shirley is the daughter of Ron (’78) and Glenna Miller of Normantown. Her son, Derek is a senior this fall at Gilmer County High School. Kimberly “Kim” Singleton Dennison (’92) has been hired as principal of Burnsville Elementary. Her duties began at the beginning of the 2004-2005 school year. A former teacher at Braxton County Middle School, Kim has her master’s degree from Marshall University and replaces another GSC alum, Charles M. “Mike” McCoy (‘70) who left the position to become Braxton County Board of Education’s assistant superintendent. Christopher P. Derico (’93) has received his master’s degree from WVU and is the Assistant Principal at Lewis County High School. He and his wife, Debbie, reside in Quiet Dell. Denver Drake (‘76) has been hired as principal of Braxton County Middle School. His duties began at the beginning of the 2004-2005 school year. A popular 5th grade teacher at the school before assuming this position, Denver has taught in Braxton County Schools for 28 years. Linda Wilson Dyer (’74) has been a counselor at Webster County High School for 13 years. She has received two master’s degrees; one is Middle Childhood Education and the other in Counseling from the West Virginia College of Graduate Studies. Roy O. Edman (’84) was recently named the new head boys basketball coach at Parkersburg South High School. He had worked as that team’s assistant coach for a number of years. W. Gordon Eismon (’34) was inducted posthumously into Glenville State College’s Curtis Elam Athletic Hall of Fame on April 24, 2004. Remembered as a renowned innovator and administrator in high school athletics, his son, Dan Eismon, accepted the award on his father’s behalf. Fields (’65) is retired and resides in Peterstown, WV with his wife, Dorothy. Tina L. Foster (’02) recently became the general manager of the Best Western-Glenville Inn. Tina, who has 20 years of experience working in hotel and restaurant businesses, and her husband, Doug live in Glenville with their two daughters, Ryann (15) and Corri (9). William F. “Bill” Gainer (’63) is retired with 36 years of experience in education. He taught school for 4 years and worked as a principal and assistant superintendent for 34 years. He has been a Realtor with Home Finders Realty Specialists in Vienna for 3 years. He and his wife, Linda, reside in Parkersburg. Their son, Mike, and his wife, Melissa live nearby in Vienna. Bill and Linda are especially proud of three grandchildren; Airika, Levi and Skyler. Carl E. Galgani (’53) lives in Columbus, Ohio where he is self-employed as a sales representative. Col. (Dr.) Larry James Godfrey (‘74) was the keynote speaker at GSC’s 2004 Commencement. A native of Grantsville, he is trained in anatomic, clinical and forensic pathology, aerospace medicine and holds ratings as an Army and Naval flight surgeon. Larry is a professor at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and director of medical systems in the Dept. of Command, Leadership and Management. Dwight R. Goff (’78) served as Wirt County Middle School’s Principal during the 2003-2004 school year and has chosen to return to his former teaching position at the elementary school where he has taught fifth grade since 1992. He taught Special Education in Wood and Wirt Counties earlier in his career. Dwight and his wife, April Lowe Goff (‘79), reside in Elizabeth with their two sons. Sarah Suzanne Gower (’02) has accepted a music position at GSC. Completing her Masters of Music Education this year from West Virginia University, Sarah has applied to begin work on her Ph.D. in Music Education at WVU. Jeremy Groves (’03) has formed his own photo studio named “Groves Photography” in Nettie, WV (Nicholas County). Scotty Hamilton (’73) was inducted into Glenville State College’s Curtis Elam Athletic Hall of Fame on April 24, 2004. Remembered as a three-time All Conference performer in football, Scotty played for legendary coach, Bill Hanlin (’53) and was the Montrose Award Winner in 1974. Scotty resides in Duluth, Georgia and was accompanied to this historic event by his wife, Jan. Robert V. “Bob” Harbaugh (’68) retired from teaching on March 1, 2004 with 33½ years of service to the Allegany County Board of Education then he took a trip to visit all the major league baseball spring training camps in Florida. He enjoys the sport and played baseball all four years while attending GSC. Bob and his wife, Janice, reside in LaVale, Maryland. Rex Hardman (’51) was honored as Normantown High School’s 2004 Teacher of the Year at their annual reunion in May 2004. In presenting the award, the Alumni’s spokesperson, Wilda Mohr Jenkins, said “Rex was one of the best loved teachers that ever taught at Normantown. He had a special way with his young students, encouraged them in a loving way, used discipline when necessary, but for the most part, laughed with us, and at our mistakes.” Rex is retired from Gilmer County Board of Education where he was the County’s Superintendent for a number of years. Susan Wilson Huggins (’77) was one of ten educators statewide to be named a recipient of this year’s Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Award. She teaches English and journalism at Williamstown High School. Susan received her master’s degree at Ohio’s Marietta College and certification through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Brenda Heatherly Harlow (‘79) was honored on December 23, 2003 as Buckhannon-Upshur High School’s Teacher of the Month. She is a mathematics instructor at the high school and has been a member of the school’s faculty for 24 years. Brenda has done graduate work in mathematics and computers at WVU, Marshall and A-B College. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in educational leadership from WVU. On May 20, 2004, she was awarded the RESA 7 Exemplary Teacher of Year Award and earlier this month, was recognized as one of three Buckhannon-Upshur teachers to be given that school’s Teacher of the Year Award. Brenda resides in Buckhannon with her husband Tom. They are the parents of two children; Tammy Clifton and Angie Dowling. Brenda is especially proud of her four grandchildren: Nathaniel Clifton, Courtney Dowling, Nicholas Clifton and Brendan Dowling. David L. Jack (’71) has worked in Braxton County as Former County Clerk, School Teacher and Accountant. In January 2004 he began working as a field rep for Woodmen of the World, who will build “Camp Sunshine” in Braxton to be open in 2006. The camp is for youth, Senior Citizens and other groups. David and his wife, Barbara, reside in Exchange. George Harper (’70) presented artwork in both the Tristate Juried Exhibition of West Virginia Watercolor Society and in the 64th Juried Exhibition of The Allied Artist of West Virginia this summer. Both shows, on exhibit for six weeks simultaneously, were well attended. The Tri State show was in Wheeling while the 64th Juried Exhibition was in Parkersburg. George retired with Professor Emeritus from GSC several years. He and his wife, Sharon Low Harper (’71), reside in Harrisville. Deborah Bunner Hartshorn (’89) was recently hired as an Admissions Counselor at GSC. She and her husband, Jeff, reside in Mt. Zion, Calhoun County where they own Hartshorn Construction Company. Deb has two children and two step-children; Zachary Moore, a 7th grader at Calhoun Middle School and Luke Moore a 4th grader at Pleasant Hill School, Justin Hartshorn a chemical engineering major at WVU and Melissa Hartshorn a pharmacy major at WVU. Paula Hogue (’91) teaches for Ritchie County Board of Education. She and her husband, Shane, reside in Harrisville. Kristopher C. Hollen (’97) resides in Green Valley, AZ and was hired as an Officer with Customs and Border Protection with the Department of Homeland Security in Nogales, Arizona. This appointment was made in June 2003. Helen Radcliff James (’44) is president of the Gilmer County Senior Center’s board of directors and a long time member of the State’s Silver-Haired Legislature. Michael W. Jarvis (’70) retired on January 30, 2004 from the U.S. General Accounting Office in Washington, DC. He retired as Senior Information Technology Specialist having over 33 years of federal service, including two years in the U.S. Army. Michael and his wife, Deanna Cayton Jarvis, reside in Woodbridge, Virginia. Theresa Stark Johnston (’90) teaches math at Lewis County High School and has her master’s degree from West Virginia University. She and husband, Tim, reside in Weston with their two children, Emyle and Brice. Dr. Sharon King Kraus (’67) has retired from GSC with Professor Emerita status after teaching for 32 years at her alma mater. Sharon and her husband, David, reside in Alum Bridge. Ron and Karen (’75) Kuhl, of Glenville, enjoy their decade-long hobby of gold prospecting. They travel to many parts of the country each year to do a little gold panning. It’s a fun hobby for them as they enjoy the process of dredging and panning, being outdoors and meeting fellow prospectors. Helen Ruth Lamb (’94) has joined the sales team at Real Estate Marketing in Weston. Ruth worked for the West Virginia Water Company for 25 years, managed a local construction company for 20 years and is currently manager of FriendSheep Farm Bed and Breakfast Farm Retreat in Orlando. She is a graduate of the Spruce School of Real Estate. Donna Lambert (‘88) of Strange Creek is the first teacher in the Braxton County School System to successfully complete the National Board Certification. The national certification is a voluntary but very rigorous, performancebased assessment. Karen Bush Lay (’79), GSC’s Financial Aid Administrator, was recently named President of the West Virginia Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (WVASFAA). This a professional organization devoted to enhancing professional competency, assisting in the development of effective programs, facilitation, communication and providing training opportunities in the field of student financial aid services. As president, Karen will serve as the official spokesperson and representative for the WVASFAA at state, regional and national meetings. Karen and her husband, Barry, have two daughters, Corrie and Alexandria Sharon H. Lynch (’85) has been hired by WesBanco as Human Resources Officer and will be responsible for the human resources management of the 14 branches in the Parkersburg area. Previously she worked as Director of Human Resources at Camden Clark Memorial Hospital in Parkersburg for 27 years. Sharon has a master’s degree from Ohio University. She and her husband, Ed, live in Parkersburg and have one adult son, James. Charles M. “Mike” McCoy (‘70) has accepted the position of assistant superintendent for Braxton County Board of Education. McCoy enjoyed a long and very successful career as principal of Burnsville Elementary School prior to accepting this position. Josh Martin (‘04) is a member of the Parkersburg Actors Guild. In the guild’s final show of the season, Josh played the mute monk, Brother Forte, in the musical “Monky Business” which ran for three weekends. Anissa Weese Meacham (’98) works as a SpeechLanguage Pathologist at Smyth County Community Hospital and has been accepted at the University of Tennessee – Knoxville this fall to work on her PhD in Speech and Language Pathology. She and her husband, Luke, reside in Wytheville, Virginia. Richard Messenger (‘69) was recently honored as the State’s Athletic Director of the Year. His career as a coach, official and administrator in Lewis County’s School System has extended almost four decades. Daniel C. Metz (’82) was appointed Superintendent of Wirt County Schools on August 10, 2004. He had been serving as the district’s assistant superintendent for the last four years and had been the Board of Education’s interim superintendent since July 2004 when Ed Toman resigned to become superintendent of Gilmer County Schools. Daniel and his wife, Brenda (’83), reside in Elizabeth. Dinah McCoy Mills (’81), director of the Lewis County Senior Center for the past 24 years, has been chosen President of the West Virginia Directors of Senior and Community Services group. This statewide organization encompasses senior directors from every county in the State. In her new position, Dinah sees a need for more training and plans to encourage all of the directors to become more involved in legislative advocacy. She met recently with local legislators to discuss funding for senior programming, including the nutrition program, transportation and in home services. Paul Mingyar (’50) has retired with Professor Emeritus status from Ohio University. He received his master’s degree from WVU and did postgraduate studies at Ohio State and Arizona State. His wife, Mary Margaret, passed away in October of 2003. Gregory B. Minner (’89) works as an administrator at Penn State University. He and his wife, Rita, who is a registered nurse, reside in Port Matilda, Pennsylvania. Daniel L. “Dan” Minney (’87) was recently hired as Weston’s City Manager. During his career, he has been a plant manager, project manager and most recently a cost accountant and operations manager for Lang Brothers in Bridpeport. Dan lives in Troy with wife, Connie and their children. John Benjamin Moore (’93) works as a PGS Golfer and is employed by T.P.C. John and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Yardville, New Jersey. Timothy L. “Tim” Moore (‘85) has been named the new basketball coach at Calhoun County High School. He has been associated with sports activities at the school for several years. Tim and his wife, PJ, reside in Grantsville. Dr. Mabel Nichols (’41) is retired and living in Diana, WV with her faithful companion/dog Mary Martha. She received her master’s degree from WVU and her doctorate from Burton College and Seminary. Mabel was West Virginia’s Teacher of the Year in 1964, served as your Alumni Association’s president and was an Instructor for the American Red Cross and the 55 Live Program. Dr. Barbara Ocheltree Nicholson (’73), Professor of Leadership Studies at Marshall University, has been given the Hedrick Outstanding Faculty Award. Barbara received this recognition at the closing faculty meeting in May 2004 when Marshall recognizes their faculty member(s) who are helping the University rise to National Prominence. Delta Nolan (’99) is working at JSI Presort Mailing Service in Charleston. Michael W. Nutter (’90) works as Operations Manager for Altercare of Ohio, Inc (a nursing home) and his wife, Nannette Hoard Nutter (’89) works in Commercial Lending for Huntington Banks. They continue to live in Ohio but enjoy their often visits to Glenville. Both Michael and Nanette volunteer with Boy Scouts of America in Pack and Troop Leadership Roles while sons Joey (10) and Matthew (6) enjoy Scouts and riding their motorcycles. The Nutter family resides in Magnolia, Ohio. Lonnie (’99) and Julie Hardbarger Perdue (’99) recently returned home to West Virginia after four years of residence in Virginia. Julie is employed as Chief Fiscal Officer at Wirt County Health Services Assoc. Inc. They reside in MacFarlan. Greta Dawson Perrine (‘03) is teaching English 9-12 at Webster County High School and working on a master’s degree in British Literature through Marshall University. Jason M. Phares (’00) is employed at GSC where he works as the College’s Information Technology Consultant. He and his wife, Heather Bucheimer Phares, were married on December 17, 2002. They reside in Glenville. R. Fred Radabaugh (’52) received a West Virginia History Hero Award in the West Virginia State Theater at the Cultural Center in Charleston on January 29, 2004. The Gilmer County Historic Landmarks Commission nominated him for this award. Fred and his wife, Willadean Clarkson Radabaugh (53), claim two residences, one at their Cedar Creek family farm in Gilmer County and the other in Elkview. Fred is a retired Kanawha County Educator and a member of the Glenville State College Board of Governors. Gregory B. Reed (’87) was hired in July 2003 as Assistant Principal at Martinsburg High School where he also serves as Athletic Director. His wife, Kelly Freshour Reed (’91) is a second grade teacher at nearby Rosemont Elementary. They reside in Martinsburg with their two small children, Meagan and Austin. Wanda Bailey Reed (’60) and Sandy Moyers Pettit (’85) were recently elected as officers to the Gilmer County Economic Development Association. Wanda to the Vice President’s position and Sandy was elected Treasurer. Dr. Robert Rentschler, Jr (’75) has released his book entitled “Four Steps from the Sycamore”. Gilmer County Public Library had a book signing for this well-written dialogue-dominant novel on April 2, 2004, Calhoun County Public Library had one on April 18, 2004 and Braxton County Public Library followed with one on May 15, 2004. Dr. Rentschler is director of Calhoun-Gilmer Career Center. He is married to the former Sandra Roberts. They live in Grantsville, where she teaches music in the middle school. Edward Rock (’61) was recently honored with enshrinement in the West Virginia Agriculture and Forestry Hall of Fame. He has provided more than 30 years of innovative service to the State Fair of West Virginia, helping to maintain the event’s strong agricultural focus. He and his wife, Anita Sue McDougal Rock (‘61), reside in Lewisburg. Frank H. Rust (’85) and wife, Jan E., live in Troy, Ohio where he is self-employed as a Golf Professional. Mack K. Samples (’65) was featured in the spring issue of the State’s GOLDENSEAL magazine in a story titled “A Neat Way to Live: Vandalia Award Winner Mack Samples”. It tells about Mack’s life-long love of music and performing, his many years as president of the West Virginia State Folk Festival, and his career as an educator and college administrator. He is known throughout the State as a folklorist, musician, square dance caller and author. The Vandalia Award, which Mack won in 2003, is the state’s highest folk life honor. GOLDENSEAL is West Virginia’s magazine of traditional life and is published quarterly by the West Virginia Division of Culture and History in Charleston. Gina Kerby Schroeder (’98) and husband, Branden live in Crownsville, Maryland where she is a business owner. Dr. Robert A. Smith (’65) recently retired from the Hamilton County Tennessee School System as Deputy Superintendent after a total of 37 years in pubic education. He is currently working part time as an adjunt faculty in graduate education at Tusculum College in Greenville, TN and is also a licensed attorney. He and his wife, Diana, reside in Hixson, Tennessee. Earlier in his career, he taught at GSC in the Science Department from 1968-70. Bob Sowards (’90) captured the CPC title at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio on June 27, 2004. He finished 12 under-par to capture the title of this PGA Club Professionals Championship. This CPC win gives him a berth in the Wisconsin’s PGA Player’s Championship that will be held this month at the Whistling Straits Course, six exemptions into PGA events in 2005 and a spot in the PGA Cup matches next year. Bob was inducted into Glenville State College’s Curtis Elam Athletic Hall of Fame on April 24, 2004. Remembered as WVIAC’s Golfer of the Year in 1987, 1989 and 1990, Bob has been a pro golfer since graduating from GSC. Nancy Meads Spears (’76) is Assistant Principal at Goshen High School. She resides in Milford, Ohio with her husband, Dorsey, and their two children, Kim and Rob. Jedidiah is a Forester for Allegheny Wood Products. Kevin Stalnaker (’77) recently celebrated his 25th service anniversary with International Business Machines Corporation in Research Triangle Park, NC. Kevin is an Advisory Software Engineer responsible for the performance analysis of IBM’s mainframe communications server. He received his master’s degree in computer science from the University of MO-Rolla and is married to Sue Ann Edwards Stalnaker (’77). They have three children, Matthew, Michelle and Bryson. Kevin and Sue Ann reside in Raleigh, North Carolina. Larry Stanley (’59) has retired after forty plus years with Con Agra Foods where he held various sales/management positions including Territory Manager, District Sales Manager, National Sales Manager, and most recently National Accounts Manager. He’s now spending quality time at home in Cincinnati, Ohio with wife, Dolores, and helping to spoil their five grandchildren who are between the ages of five and nine years old. Mike Stills (‘94 ) works as a Golf Professional at Winding Hollow Golf Club in New Albany, Ohio. His wife, Jennifer works for Bank One. They reside in Westerville, Ohio with their two children, Tyler and Taylor. Edward “Ed” Toman (’91) was recently appointed Superintendent of Gilmer County Schools. Prior to his appointment, he served as Superintendent of Wirt County Schools for four years. Patti Sparks Varner (’76) is employed with Monongalia County Board of Education as a Curriculum Specialist/Early Head Start Teacher. Patti and her husband, Rick, reside in Morgantown. Sue Fulmer Waggoner (’71) has secured employment with the Garrett County Board of Education in Oakland, Maryland where she will serve as Director of Elementary Education. She holds a master’s degree in Elementary Education/Early Childhood and Education Leadership. William B. Webb, Ph.D. (’73) is a Psychotherapist and Counselor with Oasis Behavior Health Services, LLC. He received his M.S.W. from West Virginia University in 1978 and a Ph.D. in Psychology from North Central University in Prescott, Arizona in January 2000. Bill has been in private practice psychotherapy and addictions counseling since 1978 and is the founder and director of Oasis Behavior Health Services, which opened in 1996. During a twentyyear period in his career, he served as the executive director of both the Holistic Health Center and Area Psychiatric and Psychotherapy Group in Huntington. He has been on the staff of the Joan C. Edwards Medical School at Marshall University, in the Dept. of Psychiatry since 1980, where he is Clinical Associate Professor. Bill and his wife, Carla, live in Huntington. Damon West (’47) attended the dedication of the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. on May 29, 2004. He placed a flag wreath at the West Virginia pillar in memory of the West Virginia men and women and all others who served in the war. Damon’s daughter, Lucy Ann West and a friend, accompanied him on the trip. Very active in the preservation of WWII history, Damon is retired from Gilmer County High School where he was an educator and a coach. Ever present at sporting events, he was honored at the West Virginia State Boy’s Basketball Tournament in March 2004, for attending the tournament for 57 consecutive years. With the exception of missing four tournaments while serving in WWII, Damon has attended every tournament since his first one, which was held in Buckhannon, in 1937. His son, Larry West (’69) of New Martinsville, was with him when he received this recognition. Damon and his wife, Edna, reside in Troy. H. Laban White, Jr. (’37) retired in June 2004 after practicing law for over 61 years. Laban has provided counsel and guidance to Energy Corporation of America since 1973, first as its legal advisor and subsequently as a member of its Board of Directors and most recently as a Director Emeritus. A public servant for most of his life, he has served his country in WWII as a colonel in the Army, your Alumni Association as its president and his State in the West Virginia Legislature as former Speaker of the House. Labon and his wife, Gwendolyn “Gwen” Beall White (‘41) reside in Clarksburg. Barbara Walker Wright (’73) has been promoted to Program Head of Physical Education at Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke, Virginia. The 1976 National Championship Bowling Team was inducted into Glenville State College’s Curtis Elam Athletic Hall of Fame on April 24, 2004. Remembered as the only team in the history of GSC sports to have won a National Championship, team members Sam Ferrell (‘77), Mike Hickman, Tom Newberry (‘77), Mark Smith and Dave Twyman (‘79) were recognized for this prestigious honor along with their team coach and former Athletic Director, Robert “Bob” Dollgener. Gabriel is employed as a teacher and coach by Louisa County Public Schools and also serves as assistant pastor and evangelist of the New Life Community Church in Louisa, Virginia. April is working for an area doctor and Toby is pursuing a career in oil and gas while currently working in construction. The couple will be married on September 18, 2004 in Walkersville and are planning a honeymoon trip to Kansas. They like to travel, having visited forty-nine states in addition to Europe, Mexico and Canada. Before retiring, Carolyn worked as a Home Economics Teacher in Ashtabula City Schools for 30 years. Emily was welcomed home by her half brothers Eric and Corey Berard. Steve and Dina Darby Buly (’84) celebrated the birth of their daughter, Hannah Elizabeth on January 17, 2004. She was welcomed by her 3 year old brother, Alex at the family’s home in Hillsboro. Dina works as a High School Counselor for Nicholas County Board of Education. Robert (’98) Delansky and wife, Tammy are the proud parents of son, Caleb. He was born on April 16, 2003. They were married on September 30th 2000 and reside in Dilliner, Pennsylvania. Bryan and Teresa Sterns (’01) announce the birth of their son, Grant Monroe Sterns, on March 3, 2004 at CAMC Women and Children’s Hospital in Charleston, weighing 7 lbs., 5 ozs., and measuring 20 inches long. Welcoming him home were his sisters Tiffany and Britany and his brother Drew. Teresa is Executive Assistant to the President at GSC. Bryan recently took the reins as head varsity football coach at Calhoun High School. Ethan David Weikart was born to Christopher Weikart (’00) and Michelle Boley Weikart on February 29, 2004. they reside in Mebane, North Carolina. In Memoriam Rev. Danny Milton Arbogast (‘94) of Renick, died on July 30, 2004 following a long illness. He served several United Methodist Churches in West Virginia as pastor over an eighteen year period and is survived by his wife, Maryona Arbogast, six children; Skip, Cindy, Kim, John, Paul and Lesley, twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild. Roma T. Arnott (’28) passed away on January 25, 2004 in Greenwood Village, Colorado. He retired in 1972 from Roane County Schools were he was an educator for thirtyseven years. Roma was a lifelong resident of Spencer, only recently living in Colorado for health reasons. He was preceded in death by his wife, Macel Kincaid Arnott and is survived by sons, Robert Arnott and William Barry Arnott, four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Sheila Nichols Ball (‘71 ) passed away July 4, 2004 at her residence in Elizabeth after a battle with cancer. She was employed as a teacher with the Wirt County School System for thirty-three years and had recently retired at the end of the school year. Surviving is her husband, Lawrence Ball (’71), who is in a nursing home, and her sister in law/caregiver, Joyce Fitzwater. Frank Mason Beall Jr. (‘29) died of heart failure in October 2003 at his residence in Manassas, Virginia. Frank was Gilmer County’s Band Director in the late 30’s and early 40’s. A talented saxophone and clarinet musician, he played in dance bands throughout WV and on the East Coast and at times had his own dance band. Frank retired from a career in Public Health but continued playing in bands until he was in his eighties. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Jones Beall, also of Glenville and is survived by one daughter, Susan Holme, a son, Frank III, three grandchildren, one great grandchild and three sisters; Madelyn Haywood, Yetive Young and Gwendolyn White. He received his master’s degree in psychiatric social work from the University of Pittsburgh and was retired with many years of service as a psychiatric social worker with the State of West Virginia. His wife, Laurabelle, survives him. Hugh Hyer Boggs, Jr. (’47) of Procious, departed this life on Saturday, July 10, 2004 following a long bout with cancer. Before retiring, he gave fifty years of service to Roane and Clay County Schools where he worked as a teacher, principal and bus transportation director. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Mae Woodall, in 1956, and a stepson, Robert “Wag” Allen Gandee in 1996. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Samples Gandee Boggs, son, Hugh III, daughter Debra Anne and their families. Philip I. Brake (’47) died April 8, 2003 at his home in Damascus, Maryland. Philip received his master’s degree and principal certification from West Virginia University. He began his teaching career serving as both teacher and principal in Ritchie County. Philip retired from Montgomery County Public Schools where he was a special education teacher at Demascus Elementary. He was a licensed preacher and lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. His first wife, Elaine Law Brake, preceded Philip in death. He is survived by his second wife, Annabelle Scott Brake, and three children; Judith Ganley, Kenton Brake and Bonnie Macey. Patricia “Pat” King Brannon (’66) of Parkersburg died February 20, 2004. A native of Lewis County, she retired after 42 years of service in Wood, Lewis and Monongalia Counties as a schoolteacher. Surviving is her husband, Wallace Adrian Brannon, her son, Daniel Dean Brannon and two grandchildren. Patricia Ann Britton (’65) passed away March 5, 2004 at Charleston Area Medial Center after a short illness. “Patty” furthered her education by attending the College of Graduate Studies and taught in the Kanawha County School System for years. She retired from Sissonville High School, where she taught English, Social Studies, Speech and Drama. Beatrice “Bea” Brown (’79) passed away at her home on January 12, 2004. She was a former member of the Glenville State College Choir, past president for GSC’s classified staff, a three term representative for classified staff on the Glenville State College Board of Advisors, GSC’s Classified Employee of the Year in 1994, and an administrative secretary at the College from 1979 – 1997. Bea was preceded in death by her husband, H. Ford Brown in 1987 and is survived by their two daughters Deborah Brown Gillespie (’75) and Deanna Brown Stewart (’81) and their families. Letha D. Butcher (’84) of Weston died on December 7, 2003 in Charleston following a sudden illness. Letha was band director at Lewis County High School. She loved to play the piano and sing. Letha was especially devoted to the students and loved to teach music and travel with the band. Surviving is one brother; Doug Butcher, of Weston; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Beatrice A. Norman Cain (’37) of Caldwell, Ohio departed this life on June 29, 2004. She had worked for Hazel-Atlas Glass Factory in Zanesville and as a substitute teacher for the Caldwell Exempted Village Schools. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Donald Cain and is survived by two daughters, Carol Joyce and Ann, a son, Donald, several grandchildren, great grandchildren and step great grandchildren. Lindell Craig Chapman (‘73) died January 4, 2004 after a short illness. Lindell was a retired rigger and insulator for E.I. DuPont Chemical Company in Belle. He is survived by ex-wife, Cathy Chapman; a son, Joshua R. Chapman; and daughter, Briana M. Chapman. Mary Louise Crockett Chenoweth (‘53) passed away February 2, 2004 at her home in Gassaway. She was employed as an elementary teacher in Clay and Braxton Counties until her retirement in 1973. Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Burgess Ernest Chenoweth. She is survived by her daughter; Carolyn Leonard. Paul H. Collins (’39) of Tallahassee, Florida died April 24, 2004. He received his master’s degree from WVU and completed one year of graduate study at Harvard University and the University of Virginia. He held numerous positions as an elementary teacher, high school teacher and elementary and high school principal. He served as associate dean of the Marshall University School of Medicine where he retired after 32 years of service. Paul served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theatre and during the Korean War. His wife, Georgia Collins, preceded him in death. Surviving is his two daughters; Karyl Bodine and Kay Price, several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Sue Ellen Garrett Coughlin (’63) of Stevensville, Maryland died March 21, 2004. She taught in the Wood County School System for several years and since 1980, had taught at Kent Island Elementary School in Maryland. She received her master’s degree from Loyola College of Maryland. Surviving are her husband of 41 years, Arthur C. Coughlin Jr.; one son, Michael; two daughters, Stephanie Finn and Melissa Oldfield and four grandchildren Earl Dorsey, Jr. (’34) died December 6, 2003 at his home in Huntington. Earl was a retired Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve, serving in active duty from 1942-1946 in Norfolk, VA, Lakehurst, NJ and Washington, DC. He began his teaching career at Sutton Elementary then received his master’s degree from Marshall University and did post graduate work at Ohio State University and George Washington University. Earl was a retired payroll and pension supervisor for BASE and a part time Social Studies instructor at Marshall University. Surviving is his wife, Ruthalea Keener Dorsey; daughter, Nancy Dorsey; son, Rev. Steven E. Dorsey and three grandchildren. Harold “Doc” Dougherty (’67) died January 26, 2004. A native of St. Mary’s, he spent 26 years at the Smithsonian Institution, leaving in the late 90’s as a manager in its photographic services division. He also performed magic – especially card and mind-reading tricks - at area theaters, trade shows, embassies, and wherever his act could take him including programs at his alma mater. As his health failed, he was a photo technician at a Penn Camera store in Washington, D.C. “Doc” had diabetes and a circulatory ailment that required a double leg amputation in recent months. He leaves no immediate survivors. Susan Elaine Kelley Faulknier (’83) of Marlinton died unexpectedly on November 7, 2003. She was a partner/financial director of R.W. Faulknier Excavting and employed as a secretary for the Pocahontas County School Board. Surviving her are husband, Richard W. Faulknier; and sons, Lucas Faulknier and Matthew Faulkner, both at home. Anna Royce Buckhannon Bode Fisher (‘49) of Weston, died Monday, April 19, 2004 in the United Hospital Center at Clarksburg following an extended illness. She was a retired schoolteacher and a member of the Ohio and West Virginia Retired Teacher’s Associations. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lester Robert Bode and also by her second husband, Harland R. Fisher. Surviving is her daughter, Royce Bode; her son, Michael Bode; three grandchildren, five great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Robert Ward Harrison, Jr. (’46) died December 4, 2003 at his residence in Georgia. He was a graduate of Georgia Military College, Glenville State College and Samford University – Cumberland School of Law. He passed the State Bar in 1950 and was awarded the Juris Doctor Degree in Law in 1951. In 1965, he was elected as the first State Representative of the 98th Legislative District of Camden and Charlton County. He is survived by his wife, Faye M. Harrison, daughter Suzzane Harrison, two step daughters, Cindy Wallace and Missy Brazell, and a step son, Kevin Ridenour. Herbert R. Holbert of Greenville, SC died April 18, 2004. He was retired after 28 years in furniture sales with Sears and Henderson Furniture. While attending GSC, he was inducted into the U.S. Army, serving in WWII as radio technician in Rhineland, Central Europe and Ardennes Campaigns, for which he was awarded three bronze stars. After the war, Herbert attended Kansas University and began a 20-year career in quality control with Hercules Power Company. After working in Kansas and Western Maryland for Hercules, in 1965, he moved his family to Greenville, SC. Surviving is his wife, Margaret McCarty Holbert; two sons Randy and Richard Holbert; two daughters Molly Bulla and Becky Farmer; five grandsons and three great grandchildren. Helen E. Mulnix Hunter (‘35) of Beverly Hills, Florida died March 31, 2004. Helen spent a good part of her life living in Burnsville before moving to Parkersburg. She earned her master’s degree from Marshall University and retired in 1976 with 36 years as an elementary and high school teacher in West Virginia and Ohio. In 1978, she and her husband, Thomas Hunter, relocated to Beverly Hills, Florida. He preceded her in death in 1993. John Patrick Hunter (’35) of Middleton, Wisconsin died November 26, 2003 of congestive heart failure. Born in Richwood, WV, he was married in ’37 and had two children Jon Blair and Johnie Patricia. During WWII, he became a Navy Seabee combat correspondent where he covered action throughout the Pacific Theatre. After the war, he received his journalism degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, met and married his second wife, Merry Marx, and joined the staff of The Capital Times as a journalist. John worked at The Capital Times for almost half a century (1951 – 1995). He became editorial page editor in 1970 and in 1979 became associate editor in charge of the paper’s political coverage. Throughout his career, he continued to write a twice-weekly column on the editorial page and covered politics until he was forced to retire because of his health in 1995. Surviving are his wife, Merry; his son, Jon Blair Hunter; his daughter, Johnie Pat Brown, their sons, Joel Hunter and Will Hunter, and five grandchildren. Orpha Skidmore Hyer (’26) of Flatwoods died on May 30, 2004 following a long illness. She received a Standard Normal Degree from Glenville State College and taught in elementary schools throughout Braxton County. She was recognized as Flatwoods Centurion during the Flatwoods Centurion Days Celebration. Orpha was preceded in death by her husband, Orville Burton Hyer and is survived by two daughters, Janet L. Burnside and Mary Ann Rogers, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Audrey Lynch Jividen (’39) passed away on December 16, 2003, at her residence in Charleston after a short illness. She was 100. A retired educator, she taught at Taft and Overbrook elementary schools and also taught at Morris Harvey College. She is survived by her twin sister, Olive Lynch Jividen, (’25). A native of Glenville, they were possibly the oldest living identical twins in the world. Besides her sister, a stepdaughter, Yvonne Young of Las Vegas, Nev; a stepson, Cecil M. Jividen, Jr; four step grandchildren and one step great-grandchild survive her. Her husband, Dr. Cecil M. Jividen Sr. preceded her in death. Glenda Sue Johnson (’76) and her sister, Nancy Jane Johnson perished in a house fire on January 21, 2004. After graduating from GSC, Glenda earned her master’s degree from West Virginia University and was employed as a second grade teacher at Sutton Elementary School. Surviving is her sister, Linda Brown of Flatwoods. Dr. James Gay Jones (’36) departed this life on February 11, 2004 at the Stonewall Jackson Medical Center in Weston. He received his master’s degree in 1946 from West Virginia University and in 1952, was the fifth person in West Virginia to receive his PhD in History from WVU. He began his teaching career in a one-room school in Roane County and later moved to Glenville State College where he was a professor for 27 years. While at GSC, he was a Chairman of the Social Science Department and upon retirement was awarded Professor Emeritus status. An accomplished author, he has written several articles for the World Book Encyclopedia and also four books on Appalachian Ghost Stores. Gay was proceeded in death by his wife, Garnet Louise Miller Jones, whom he married in 1945. Surviving are three children, Kim Jones (’75) and Alysia Moody (’79), both of Glenville and Rod Jones (’71) of Staunton, VA. Six grandchildren and eight great grand children also survive him. Lloyd Marlin “Casey” Jones (‘34) died on June 4, 2004 in an auto accident near his Oakland, Maryland retirement home. After graduating from GSC in 1934, he became the College’s business manager following a year of teaching at Richwood High School. He left GSC to enlist in the United States Navy, serving in the Philippines during World War II. Following the war, he continued as business manager at the college until 1966 when he because Assistant to the Vice President for Administration and Finance at West Virginia University. Casey was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Summers Jones and is survived by his son, William G. Jones, (’64), his daughter Sarah Elizabeth Stuart (’71), several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. William “Billy” Karantonis (‘46) died June 18, 2004 in Beckley after a long illness. He was a retired mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and the retired owner of Karantonis Brothers No. 2 Store in Dorothy. Surviving is his wife, Joann Ferrell McGraw Karantonis; daughters Nancy, Sonya and Pam; son, Steve, twelve grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Claude Ray Kemper (’33) of Cape Coral, Florida and Newberne, WV died on January 7, 2004 at Hope Hospice House in Cape Coral, Fl. Surviving is his son, Ronald Kemper and his daughter in law, Lynne Kemper. Claude was preceded in death by Ethel Foster Kemper (‘32), his wife of 66 years, who died in 1998. Claude was best known in West Virginia as the carver of “Birds of My Hollow,” a collection of 45 bird species indigenous to the Newberne area, where he spent his childhood and his summers after he retired from West Virginia University. Beginning in 1975, he took part in annual Stonewall Jackson Heritage Arts and Crafts Jubilee fairs in Jane Lew, participating in 28 of the 30 years that it has been held. He also exhibited his personal collection in the annual West Virginia Folk Festival in Glenville. A complete collection of his bird carvings, which he donated to Glenville State College in 2000, is on permanent display in the Claude and Ethel Kemper Room, located in the College’s Robert F. Kidd Library. Elizabeth Boyce Lamp (‘ 52) of Osawatomie, Kansas died on June 16, 2004. A native of Doddridge County, she was preceded in death by husband, James Cleburn Lamb in 1984. Surviving are three sons, James, Charles and Timothy, a stepson, Ralph, three daughters; Doris Barnett, Teresa Daniels and Susie Shore, a stepdaughter, Sandra Kincaid, sixteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Kathryn Underwood Lampe (’64) died on December 10, 2003 at the New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, North Carolina. She retired in 1990 as principal at Frametown Elementary. Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband, Cliff S. Lampe, Sr. She is survived by her son, Cliff S. Lambe, Jr. Cleva Mick Linger (’38) died January 21, 2004 in Melbourne, FL. She taught in the West Virginia School System for 24 years then moved to Florida in 1962 and taught there until she retired in 1977. Her husband, Wirt Linger and a son, Richard, preceded her in death. Surviving is her son, Aaron Linger. Rev. Glendon McKee (’47) passed away on April 16, 2004. Early in life, he was employed at Spencer State Hospital and the American Viscose Company in Parkersburg, After being called into the ministry, he enrolled at GSC and accepted the ministry to a Charge of 11 churches in the Glenville-Normantown circuit. After graduation, he moved to Calhoun County and pastured churches until his health failed. In addition to preaching for 55 years, he was a teacher for 30 years in the Calhoun County School System. Rev. McKee is survived by his wife, Eupha Hicks McKee, one son, Rev Roger McKee; one daughter Roanna Stump; six grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 4 step great grandchildren and 1 step great great grandchild. Elsie Katherine Mills (’50) of Elizabeth died March 2, 2004 in the Cedar Grove Personal Care Home where she had been a resident since November 1993. “Katie” furthered her education by doing graduate studies at West Virginia University and taught at Elizabeth Elementary School for over 40 years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, George Warren Mills. M. Genevieve Mills (’36) died on December 15, 2003 in Marietta, Ohio. She received her master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh and was employed by the USSO Travel’s Aid in Newport News, Virginia during WWII. After the war, she worked in hospitals for the Veterans Administration in East Orange, NJ; Huntington, WV; Clarksburg, WV and Chillicothe, OH. She retired in 1974 as a supervisor of psychiatric work and moved to Marietta. Genevieve was a life member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the National Association of Social Work. She was an avid reader and traveled extensively in many countries. Christy A. Gregory Morton (’97) of Summersville died on June 11, 2004. Surviving is one son, Andrew Gregory, and a daughter, Kerry Lester. Carl E. Mullenix (‘30) passed away on April 14, 2003 at his home in Highland, California. Surviving is his wife Vivian, son, Ronald and daughter, Sharon. Martha Summers Allen Painter (‘30) departed this life on April 30, 2004 in Elkins. She taught school in Clay County Schools from 1928 – 1934 and substituted in Pendleton County in the 1940’s. She and her husband owned and operated Bill’s Place at Seneca Rocks for 24 years and they built the Gateway Restaurant in 1966. Her husband, William “Bill” Painter, preceded Martha in death. Surviving are two sons, Mark Painter and Jon Painter; one daughter Nita Kay Richards and an adopted daughter, Mary Thompson. Gilbert Ross Rhoades, Jr. (‘40) died on May 30, 2004 at the Villages of Lady Lake, FL. He was a mine foreman in Glenville and was later Vice President of Columbia Gas Transmission Company in Charleston. His wife, Mildred “Judy” Gainer Rhoades (42), preceded him in death. Surviving is his daughter Victoria Rhoades Frisk; son, Gilbert R. Rhoades, III; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Steve Richards (‘70) formerly of Harrisville passed away August 11, 2004 in Zambia, Africia. He worked for Westvaco Corporation for 14 years and at Camp of The Hills in Procious for 3 years. He founded and pastured Calvary Baptist Church in Harrisville and was involved in numerous mission projects. Surviving is his wife, Linda; his son, Kevin; daughter, Julie Seagraves and three grandchildren. Ora May Linger Rogers (’49) passed away on January 23, 2004 at her home in Sutton after a short illness. She was employed by the Braxton County Board of Education for thirty-seven years as a teacher and administrator. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Lorraine Rogers in November 1994 and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Grace Holcomb Schulze (’50) departed this life on July 5, 2004. Born in Clay County she was a resident of Hammonton, New Jersey for thirty years where she worked as a childcare specialist. Her husband, Theodore, preceded her in death. Surviving is one daughter, Martha Schulze; two sons, Joseph and Stephen and two grandchildren. Ronald Keith “Tony” Shuman (’57) died January 21, 2004 following a long illness. A retired teacher with experience in Canton, OH and Calhoun and Braxton Counties, Tony more recently served on the Braxton County Board of Education. During his teaching career, he also served as freshman football coach and assistant wrestling coach at Braxton County High School. Surviving is his wife, Shirley James Shuman of Gassaway; daughter Mary Anne Backus; sons, Brian Mark, Christopher Ronald, Philip Allan, Thomas Keith and Joel James. Meredith Daniel Sisk (’46) died June 8, 2004 at Crestview Manor in Jane Lew. He was a retired educator is Lewis County Schools, a veteran of WWII and a member of the American Legion Post #166. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Gladys Pearl Burton Sisk, in 2003. Surviving is their only child, Janet Sisk Justo and her family. H. Jack Sizemore (’55) died on July 1, 2004 in Marietta, Ohio. He had been a resident of Marietta Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation since August of 2003 where he was a patient in the Lighthouse Unit for Alzheimer’s disease and related ailments. A native of Welch, Jack spent thirty-two years as a YMCA Director. He is survived by his wife, Lois Martin Sizemore; two children; R. Elese and Ritchie; three stepsons, Gregory Smith, Johnny Smith and Jeffrey Riss; and one stepdaughter, Poppy Crawford. Thomas C. Staats (’57) of Clarksburg departed this life on June 1, 2004. An employee with CNG Gas Company, he retired with 37 years of service. His wife, Paula Jackson Staats, survives. Also surviving are four daughters, one son and two grandchildren. Garnett Gaines Taylor (’80) of Marietta, Ohio and formerly of Glenville died on May 24, 2004. For many years, she worked at the circulation desk in the Robert F. Kidd Library on GSC’s campus. She had been in declining health since suffering a stroke three years ago. Her husband, Rev. Donald E. Taylor, preceded her in death. Garnet is survived by her two sons, Joe and Daniel (‘74); five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Ray H. Watson (’47) passed away on May 18, 2004 in Charleston at the Charleston Area Medical Center. A native of Weston, he was well known throughout the State of West Virginia as a great high school and college football coach. Ray was president of the Little Kanawha Athletic Conference for three years, a member of the Board of Appeals of the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission, and was elected to the Elizabeth City Council and to the Wirt County Board of Education. He served on the Wirt County Development Authority, the Wirt County Health Board, the Mid-Ohio Valley Hall of Fame Committee and was a commissioner of the Wirt County Little League for 16 years. A 2001 Inaugural Inductee in Glenville State College’s Curtis Elam Athletic Hall of Fame, he is also a member of the West Virginia University Institute of Technology Athletic Hall of Fame and the Mid Ohio Valley Sports Hall of Fame. His other honors include being named Principal of the Year by the West Virginia Coaches Association, Retired Coach of the Year by the West Virginia Coaches Association, and a Lewis County Sports Great. Ray is survived by his wife of 57 years Beatrice “Bea” Stewart Watson, a daughter Becky Watson (’76); son, Mike, and four grandchildren. Eunice Chambers Wilson (’50) of Washington, D.C. died February 9, 2004 at the Knollwood Health Services Retirement Center. She taught in Roane County Schools until 1958. Eunice was also the bookkeeper for Wilson & Chambers Dairy, owned and operated by her husband and her brother. The family moved in 1958 to Marietta, Ohio and she continued teaching until her retirement. Her husband, Hal Wilson, preceded Eunice in death. Surviving are her two daughters; Virginia Claypool and Dona Lynn MacMurdy; five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Shirley A. Wilson (’51) died on July 6, 2001 of an apparent heart attack. He earned his master’s degree from WVU and retired from teaching world history and driver’s education at Berkshire High School in Burton, Ohio in 1984. Shirley enjoyed sports and was an umpire at Greater Cleveland baseball and softball games for 30 years. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary L. Wilson; daughters; Shirleen Turko, Sandra Cseplo and Shelly Peattie. Elva Yoak (‘44 ) of Grantsville passed away on August 20, 2004. She was 92 years old and was one of Calhoun County’s last “old time” teachers having retired in 1973. Until her stroke in June 2004, she enjoyed quilting five days a week for Calhoun County Senior Citizens. Elva was a cancer survivor “walker” at the area’s annual Relay for Life, and was ever present at community affairs. Lucille King Young (’39) of White Rock, South Carolina passed away on May 5, 2004. She received her master’s degree from Marshall College in 1955. Her career in elementary education began in West Virginia in a one-room school and continued until she retired from the Florida education system in the early sixties. Lucille was preceded in death by her husband, Preston G. Young, Sr. Surviving is her son, P.G. Young Jr., three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Captain Maynard Fling Young (’29) died February 29, 2004. Maynard graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in1937 and obtained his law degree from George Washington University. He had 26 years of military service and was a WWII veteran. After retiring from the Coast Guard, he was a Contract Administrator for American University. Surviving is his wife, Yetive of Vienna; and daughters from deceased wife, Rosemary Cooper Young; Gail Workman, Melinda Landolt and Holly Helvig, and stepchildren; Sherry Huggins and Skip Norman.
