Quarterly Membership Meeting Friday, March 4 6PM

True Winter This Year
by Tim Hanlon, Commodore
Two Snowfalls so far
by Anita Hulo, Vice Commodore
As we experience a true winter season in 2016 I want to let
you know how well the Club is hosting events, moving snow
and continuing to make the MRYC a “home for its
members!”
Our entertainment Committee has set up a series of events,
including the Mother-Son, Father-Daughter dinner dance
which had over 70 attendees, all of whom had a great deal
of fun dining and dancing. The Club recruited two new
member families from this event!
Fleet Captain Penny and I attended the YCM Fleet
Captain’s meetings a couple weeks ago at Eastern Yacht
Club in Baltimore. Many of the other clubs who attended
the meetings also signed up to visit on cruises to MRYC
this season. The other Commodores are busy setting up
Opening Day events at their clubs and Kent Island YC will
be visiting MRYC for a BBQ on Friday, May 13th, the
evening before our Opening Day celebrations on Saturday,
May 14th. MRYC Opening Day ceremonies will begin on
Saturday morning at 11AM. Plan to attend and if you arrive
by boat remember to “dress” your boat. More details will be
sent out to you soon.
Fr. James Nash of Saints Peter & Paul Church, Easton, is
our new Fleet Chaplain and will replace Rev. Abigail
Crozier Neslehutt who has taken a new assignment in
Pennsylvania. We wish Rev. Neslehutt much success in
her new assignment and welcome Fr. Nash who will take
on his first official duty with our Opening Day ceremonies.
Carl Pergler brought in a most interesting speaker in
February, Captain Rick Carrion of the Elf, a Lawley built
1888 30’ Class Cutter. The stories he shared about the
restoration project and his experiences made for a most
enjoyable evening. We look forward to seeing “The Elf” this
spring and summer as she will be in the Miles River for
races and tours as she is now berthed at the Maritime
Museum.
I look forward to seeing all of you at the Club.
Maybe Mother Nature is trying to tell us to slow down
and just be. With the low temperatures we had and
the snowfall making it dangerous to drive, thus
appealing to stay in, it was much needed “time out.”
That’s when I could catch up on things like writing this
article.
The Sail Committee’s Winter Speaker Series speaker
on 4 February was very interesting. Rick Carrion, the
owner/captain of The Elf spoke about his journey with
restoring her to beyond her original sturdiness. It was
a very interesting talk and enjoyed by all in
attendance. Tell your friends about the winter speaker
series occurring on the first Thursday of Jan-Apr. You
won’t be disappointed with a nice dinner and
captivating speakers.
The Valentine’s event on February 13th with the Fred
Hughes Jazz Band was great! We had the
Chateaubriand for two and it was exceptional. Along
with the Commodore and his wife being seated at our
table, it made for a very special Valentine’s
celebration. Although Commodore Tim and I are line
officers at the same time, we don’t often get such
quiet evenings to talk and laugh.
MRYC’s 2016 Yearbook is coming along. We’re
working on the final stages of proofreading as you
read this. The House Committee is going well. Our
General Manager has challenges with implementing
her ideas and staying within a tight budget. I’ve asked
her to write an article each month to let you, the
members, know what she has in mind and what’s
new.
I want to be available to you. Email me at
[email protected] or call at 301-613-9801.

SPECIAL SUPPORT
Long Hauler Editor: Sharon Miller
by Glenn Higgins, Rear Commodore
When my children were younger
they had an activity book. It was
called "Where's Waldo?” The
idea was to find "Waldo," a
cartoon character dressed in a
red and white striped shirt,
glasses and a red knit cap. Each
page had a different scene.
Generally a very busy street, a
carnival or some other type of
chaos. Waldo was hidden in
amongst the clutter. Sometimes
barely visible. Finding Waldo was always cause for a minor celebration.
Fast forward to the present. The Miles River Yacht Club is missing one
of its trophies. The Bigelow trophy, or it's more recent name, "The
Jimmy Wilson Memorial Trophy," (pictured above) is awarded to the
Log Canoe winning the Wednesday night around the island race. It was
determined to have been misplaced during a recent Trophy audit.
I need to be clear about this. The trophy has not been stolen. The
trophy has been awarded without adequate record keeping. We are
human. And sometimes humans make mistakes. We have made one.
During my search for the Bigelow I was told of a large trophy that had
been missing for fifteen years, only to be found in the attic of the
recipient’s home. I'm quite sure this will be the case with the Bigelow.
Or, it may well be "hiding in plain sight” on a mantle or bookshelf.
I ask for your help, especially Log Canoers, please give this some
thought as we have wracked our brains trying to come up with a
solution. Make a search around your home, your office or anywhere
that you can think of. I thank you in advance. Let's bring The Bigelow
home.

Spring is Soon
Junior Sail Program
Sail Class Dates
by Penny Rhine, Fleet Captain
Week 1 - June 20-24
Spring begins soon! YEAH!
Let the “harping” begin.
We have all 66 slips assigned and most contracts have
been returned with proper insurance information.
However, we are still awaiting the last 25. According to
the time line set by the Board, contracts are due March
1st. If they are not returned by March 15th, you will be
notified that your slip may be forfeited. Okay, ‘nuff said.
Slip holders – we will have a party on Sunday, May 1
from 1-3PM. Come meet your “neighbors” and choose
your Dock Captains for 2016. It would be great if each
of you orders a name badge before then. (See page 6
for ordering information.) I’m sure you’ve seen lots of us
wearing them – and you can store them on the “board”
outside the Chartroom. They make life so much easier
for those of us with CRS disease.
Look for the Club Crawl on April 9th.
We will have some details next month regarding cruises
this Summer – Bob Luff is our Cruise Coordinator and
has great ideas.
We have booked 4 visiting Yacht Club cruises and are
looking forward to many more. Everyone is excited
about the 2016 boating season.
Week 2 - June 27-31
Week 3 - July 11-15
Week 4 - July 18-22
Week 5 - August 1-5
Week 6 - August 8-12
Annapolis Junior Race Week - July 6 – 8
Annual Regatta - August 11
Awards - August 12

the Junior Sail page on the Club web site.
P/C Auction
by Dick Steen, Past Commodore
Bring items you no longer need and either donate them
or we will pay you 75% of the sale price they bring at
the auction. Please combine items of small value so we
can have a fun day. It would be nice if items are valued
at $10 or more. Items should be in working order.
The items can be brought to the Club starting on April
25th and will be put in the Commodore’s Room. We will
have a preview on Auction Day from 10AM to 1PM. The
auction will start at 1PM sharp.
CLUB CRAWL
Mark your calendars –
April 9th, 2016.
Here is a great chance to
visit some of our sister
clubs with an all day
PARTY!!!
Bus will leave Miles River
at 8:00 am. Beverages will
be on board.
We pick up more partiers
at Kent Island Yacht Club
and head to the Western
Shore. We will visit 3 or 4 different clubs (Sue Haven
and Crescent are booked). Kent Island Yacht Club will
be our last party stop and we should arrive back at
Miles River Yacht Club around 7:00 pm. Details are
being finalized but we can promise a fun day for all.
Please contact F/C Penny Rhine if you are interested in
joining us.
Thanks for your participation and come join us for a
great time.

Two New Directors Named to
MRYC Foundation
Manager’s Corner
by Cheryl Alfes, Club General Manager
Two long-time sailors have been elected to serve on the
Miles River Yacht Club Foundation’s Board of Directors.
Marshall Patterson, Past Commodore of the Miles River
Yacht Club and a veteran log-canoe captain, and Dick
Cooper, Past Commodore of the Chesapeake Bay Bermuda
40 Association, joined the board of the non-profit
philanthropic organization in January.
“We are thrilled to welcome Marshall and Dick to our board,”
Foundation Chair Dr. Sherry Manning said. “Marshall served
as a founding member of the Board of Directors and returns
after serving as Commodore of the MRYC. Dick comes with
a wealth of experience as an award-winning journalist and
will help present the Foundation’s work to the community.”
Tickets still Available for
Foundation Awards Dinner
Tickets are still available for the annual MRYC Foundation’s
Awards Dinner on Saturday, April 16. The Foundation is
honoring America’s Cup TV Host Tucker Thompson at the
dinner that will be held at the Talbot Country Club in Easton.
Thompson, a professional sailor and broadcaster, will
receive the Foundation’s Distinguished Service Award and
give a multi-media presentation on the 2013 America’s Cup
in San Francisco and the preparations for the 2017 Cup to
be held in Bermuda.
Proceeds from the event will support the Foundation’s
philanthropic efforts including the Sink or Swim Program
that has taught hundreds of Eastern Shore children how to
swim. Corporate or Individual Sponsorships are available for
$500 to $5,000. Tickets are $125 per person. Contact Philip
Webster at [email protected] for information about
sponsorships. For ticket information, contact Libby Moose at
[email protected] or call 410-916-0473.
SUELLEN G. GARGALLI JUNIOR SAIL
SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT
Last February 2015 the SGG Endowment was created to
provide annually a junior sail scholarship(s) to future young
sailors on the Chesapeake Bay’s Eastern Shore in Kent,
Caroline, Dorchester and Talbot counties.
The endowment honors 2007 P/C Suellen Gargalli’s interest
in junior sailing and enhances MRYC’s and the MRYC
Foundation’s mission statements. The Foundation manages
the SGG Endowment and administers future grants.
For each $16,000 invested a perpetual annual scholarship
will be available to a junior sailor participating in a qualified
program in the above named Maryland Eastern Shore
counties. This year $6,000 is still needed to provide the first
scholarship in the future. Your help is needed. Each
additional $16,000 will provide another annual scholarship.
Contributions payable to the “MRYC Foundation SGG
Endowment” can be mailed to: The MRYC Foundation; 606
North Talbot Street, #115; St. Michaels, MD 21663

Spring is approaching and it is time to spruce up the
Club once again!
The pool is probably the most exciting place to be
during the summer months and could really benefit from
some new items to make it more fun for our youngest
members. Since we have limited funds to work with, I
am hoping we can count on our membership to donate
the following items or contribute a cash donation so we
can purchase the list below. Gently used items are
welcomed!
So if you don't need and it's on the list please consider
us first!
Swing set
Tether ball
Fuse ball table
Ping pong table with paddles and net
Swinging chairs for hanging
Shade awnings for the baby pool area
Replace broken storage sheds for pool items
We will also be planning a planting day for the spring to
make everything beautiful once again for your
enjoyment! We will need plants, flowers, pots and a
work force to complete the process. Once we finalize
the date I will let everyone know.
Thanks once again for your support and assistance!
Cooking Classes
Classes will be limited to 8-10 students per class.
Students should come prepared with closed shoes, long
pants and long hair restrained. Class time for all classes
is 2:00 – 4:00 pm. The cost of each class is $50.00.
The final class is Thursday,
March 24 – Easter Ideas!
Get some fun ideas for that
perfect Easter celebration in
the March session.
Be sure to sign up early.
Space is limited!
If you know of a member who
could use some sunshine because of
an illness or family loss, let Karen
Harrison know at 410-310-2519 and
she will get word to the Club.

Birthdays and Anniversaries
If you see your name below, tell the bartender and get
a free drink to celebrate. To have your special days
listed in the LongHauler, email
[email protected] with your information.
Don’t keep us in the dark! Club management and your
House Committee needs your feedback so we know
what is working well and what is not. We need to know
what our members want and expect of our Club. If you
have a problem while in the Club, tell someone then, so
the problem can be fixed when it happens. There is
always a Manager of the Day on duty and usually an
officer or House Committee member in the Club.
So, tell us what you think about the menu, the food, the
service, the entertainment, the pool, the marina. Please
email comments to the House Committee at
[email protected].
We want to hear from you and we will respond.

Welcome Spring in MRYC Logowear
This is a good time to think about sprucing up the
wardrobe with new shirts and jackets. Check out the
MRYC logowear from members Charles and Dot Low at
Embroidered Images (410-745-6280). They provide the
Club with beautifully embroidered MRYC logowear and can
help you with personalization – think name, boat name,
and custom items – from their many catalogs, or you can
purchase from the display case in the lounge. They can
embroider a whole lot more than they display at the Club!
Ask in the office or at the bar, if you want to purchase an
item from the case or visit Dot and Charles in their shop on
Fremont Street (behind Acme). All purchases help the Club
whether you make them at the Club or at their shop.
