The ABC’s of Shampoo Service
It’s as basic as a professional beauty service can be. All other salon services
achieve better results when performed on clean and healthy hair and scalp.
If it is true that we don’t see the trees because of the forest, or the leaves
because of the tree, it may also be true that the shampoo is so taken for
granted that this solid and vital service may be unnoticed and non respected.
If, however, as much attention and concern were given to the shampoo as is
given to a color, conditioning or perm, patrons would have as much respect
for this first phase of all of the other services. The shampoo service is as
elementary as the ABC’s in the alphabet of the beauty services.
A is for ADDITIVES
Some shampoo additives such as enrichments and built – in conditioners,
etc., may coat the hair shaft. Since this coating tends to attract pollutants,
such as dust and grime, it can result in the hair getting dirty more quickly.
B is for BASIC
There are two basic kinds of shampoo-soap and detergent. Today most
shampoos have a detergent base for better cleaning ability. The difference
between a soap shampoo and a detergent shampoo is that soap shampoos
have a cleaning base made from fats and oils, and detergent shampoos use
synthetic materials to achieve the same end result. Contrary to popular
training which associates “detergent” only with heavy duty laundry
products, there are many types of detergents. A detergent is simply a
combination of ingredients designed to clean well, and the detergents used in
most professional shampoos today are tailored not only to clean well, but are
mild on the hair and scalp.
C is for CLEAN
Clean hair is the most basic requirement for any attractive looking head of
hair. Clean hair has bounce, shine and movement. Clean hair show the cut
and style to its best advantage and clean hair smells GREAT!

SH #1
D is for DANDRUFF
While there are many theories of what factors contribute, no one knows its
precise cause. Dandruff is marked by excessive flaking and itching of the
scalp. Fortunately, it is a condition that may be effectively controlled
through the regular use of a dandruff shampoo containing a proven
antidandruff ingredient called zinc pyrithione, or ZPT, which acts directly on
the scalp where dandruff occurs.
E is for Environment
Most of our cities have dirty air which filters down onto your heads. The
harsh particles of soot, grime and smog attach themselves to the hair and
cause a “sandpapering” effect. A simple way for coping with problems of
the environment is to shampoo as frequently as necessary.
F is for Fallout
Shampooing does not aggravate hair “fallout.” The loss of 50 to 250 hairs
per days is considered normal, and the follicles begin to sprout new hair
immediately. Shampooing may loosen hairs, but only those that were about
to fall anyway.
G is for Growing
Everyone’s hair grows at a different rate. On the average, hair grows about a
half inch each month. You can’t actually make hair grow faster, but you can
suggest the best way to encourage it to grow at its maximum rate. A healthy
diet, plenty of exercise, adequate sleep and regular trims are the best way of
encouraging hair to grow.
H is for Harsh
Of all the myths surrounding shampoo, one of the most persistent is the
harsh versus mild myth. In fact, among todays popular shampoos THERE
ARE NO SUCH THING AS A HARSH SHAMPOO or ONE THAT IS
DAMAGING TO YOUR HAIR. There are shampoos for every type of hair
and the choice is almost limitless – as the expert, you must prescribe the
correct shampoo for each patron,
I.J.K.is for In Salon, On the Job, Knowledge
You know that no two heads of hair are identical. And there really is no such
thing as absolutely “perfect” head of hair. There is nothing you can do to
alter the basic character of hair through shampoo. But with gentle handling,
Scalp Info Page 2 of 34
Revised 3-06
SH #1
cleanliness and educate, expert common sense, you will help your patron to
achieve healthy, well – groomed hair.
L is for Lather
Shampoo lather serves to “lift” the dirt out of the hair and insure that it is
rinsed away. Because of the reduced quantity of dirt on the scalp, a shampoo
lathers more easily with the second application. During the final rinse, any
remaining dirt and oil is washed away, along with the shampoo. It is
important to note that a shampoo simply lifts collected debris from the outer
layer of the hair shaft and scalp.
M is for Massage
Massaging the scalp during the shampoo service is important. It improves
the circulation and brings important nutrients in the blood to the scalp area.
These nutrients, in turn, feed the hair follicles in the scalp.
N.O. is for Necessary and Often
Or how often should hair is shampooed? Many hair problems may be
controlled when the hair is shampooed properly and frequently. A number of
factors determine how often this should be: environment, use of
conditioners, hair sprays, etc., the rate at which a particular head of hair
produced sebum or “hair oil”. On the “average” or normal head the sebum
begins to spread through the hair again one day after shampooing. The
second day after a shampoo brings more oil distribution and be the third day
the hair is beginning to clump together again.
P is for pH
pH is the measure of acid or alkalinity in a substance, measured form O
(which is very acidic). An acid or low pH shampoo is softening and would
be selected for dry and damaged hair. Allowing the cuticle layer to lie down
and hair to be tangle free, manageable and to have a shine. An alkaline or
high pH shampoo is drying abrasive and would not be used except to
restructure hair, i.e., break bonds to form a perm curl. Continual use of either
“extreme” will destroy hair.
Q is for Quantity
How much product you use depends largely on how much hair you must
shampoo. Manufactures usually suggest a quantity to get the best results.
You should use enough at least to insure that all the hair is well covered with
shampoo. There should be sufficient lather to “carry” away the dirt.

Revised 3-06
SH #1
R.S.T. is for Remember, Service and Technique
Technique is important. This is true of all professional beauty services,
there’s a “right” and “not so right” way. Concentrate your attention on the
service. A good shampoo is as valuable as a finished comb-out. The
following six- step outline should serve as a reminder:
1.
Massage the scalp to loosen dead skin and remove dust and lint
from the hair
2.
Wet hair and apply the appropriate shampoo. First, put the
shampoo on hands, and then work it into lather with the
fingertips, insuring that the scalp – as well as the hair is being
washed.
3.
Distribute the shampoo through all of the hair and massage
gently.
4.
Rinse well with lukewarm water. Apply shampoo again,
repeating the same basic technique.
5.
During the final rinse, gently separate the hair into sections.
Rinse each section thoroughly until both the scalp and hair are
free of lather.
6.
Finally, comb with a wide toothed comb. Remember wet hair is
fragile ALWAYS treat it gently.
U.V.W. is for Unquestionable, Vital, but which One?
With so many products available it can be confusing knowing which one to
choose. The responsibility of the professional is to be ever alert to new
products you feel will best do the job successfully. What is true for color,
perms, conditioners and all other professional services products is equally
true of the shampoo.
X.Y.Z. is for Xplain Your Zeal
When your patron’s hair look great she may not remember it all began with
a terrific shampoo, so remind her again and again that a good shampoo
service is a part of the foundation of the best looking hair fashions.

CONDITIONERS
ApHOGEE
For Professional USE ONLY
Formulation is based on an intensified
polymeric unguineous lotion with and
affixed catalyst which enables the
polymer to penetrate the hair shaft,
attaches itself to existing polypeptide
chains of keratin fibers. (Think of this as
a grafting process like that of a skin
graft).
In “cross linking” or grafting it bridges
the adjacent polypeptide chains which,
reduces the solubility of the polypeptide
chains which helps to preserve the
integrity of the hair as well as strengthen
it to great degrees. It now becomes
extremely difficult to re-damage the hair
with highly alkaline chemicals found in
such things as bleach, permanent wave
solution, and others.
Hair that has been conditioned with
ApHOGEE has a vast amount of
elasticity, promoting longer lasting
perms, hair sets, and air waving styles.
General Directions
FOR SERIOUSLY DAMAGED HAIR:
1. Shampoo hair with a pH balanced shampoo
2. Towel dry
3. Apply ApHOGEE to hair (apply liberally) comb through to distribute thoroughly
4. Place under HOT dryer (NO plastic cap, PLEASE) and dry thoroughly (about 30 minutes)
5. Rinse hair thoroughly and proceed with next service, (setting,
blow drying, iron curling, bleaching, tinting, etc.)
FOR HAIRCOLORING / TWO PROCESS:
1. Bleach hair in usual manner. Rinse bleaching agent from hair.
2. Apply ApHOGEE (liberally) to hair.
3. Place under dryer and dry thoroughly.
4. Apply tint (comb through with large toothed comb).
5. Apply plastic cap over head and place under HOT dryer and check closely
(every 2 ½ minutes) for development
6. When tint is completed, rinse thoroughly and continue with styling.
 Applying ApHOGEE before tinting can result in an improved acceptance of the tint, toner or
rinse.
The tints have intense sheen, great depth of color and adhere with a tenacity that defies belief.
FOR PERMANENT WAVING:
1. Process permanent in usual manner, after curl pattern has been established,
BLOT hair (each curl) thoroughly with towel.
2. Apply ApHOGEE generously to each curl.
3. Place under HOT dryer and dry thoroughly about ONE to TWO HOURS.
(NO plastic cap over hair, PLEASE)
4. Apply neutralizer, leave on for 5 minutes.
5. Rinse and remove rods and proceed with styling.

EMERGENC’EE
Is the ultimate Polymeric Reinforcement for
structurally degraded hair that falls beyond
the realm of conventional conditioners. The
unique combination of polymers creates an
internal strengthening framework where
disintegration of hair proteins has occurred
through natural or chemical abuse. The
cuticle of the hair is additionally
strengthened and protected with a tough
polymeric web of support. This permeable
structure will remarkably transform
hopelessly damage hair to a degree that will
allow a return to chemical services.

CARE OF SCALP, HAIR AND MANIKIN
Shampooing the Manikin:
Rise back of the shampoo chair to the level of neck rest on shampoo bowl.
Pull chair about 2” to 3” away from bowl to form shelf on which to rest the
manikin in prone position. Be sure head is well-balanced.
If two people are working together, one can hold the manikin while the
other shampoos.
Supplies Needed:

7.
8.
Pin towel around neck of manikin.
Rinse hair with tepid water then apply shampoo. (one soaping is
usually sufficient).
To avoid matting hair, do not massage but work hands gently.
through hair several times in same direction as hair falls.
Rinse thoroughly with tepid water.
Apply cream rinse. Distribute rinse in same manner as when
shampooing. (use 1 oz. Cream rinse to 7 oz. Water). If you had
concentrate cream rinse.
Comb through hair with large-tooth comb.
Rinse lightly. Avoid tangling hair.
Pull towel up over head and squeeze out moisture. Do Not rub with
towel.(this could cause excessive tangles).

Comb hair again and allow it to dry at room temperature or place

NOT used HOT temperature.
HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR PRACTICE MANIKIN
You have the finest practice manikin made. The care of it is quite
simple. Just observe the instructions listed below and your manikin can
and should last for years.
1. DON’T WORK ON THE HAIR WHEN IT IS COLD.
If your manikin has been exposed to low temperature, allow it to
warm to room temperature before working on it. Without the human
scalp to warm it, the hair is more brittle and easier to break when it
is cold.
2. CLEANING THE HAIR.
Since there are no natural oils to trap dirt, the hair will not require
frequent washing. Before washing it, first comb out the hair
removing any snarls. Use a detergent-type shampoo. A cream
shampoo will make the hair soft and limp. Use only cool or
lukewarm water. NEVER USE HOT WATER. Hot water will
make the hair mat and tangle. Shampoo the hair from the scalp to the
ends. You need not scrub or wad the hair. It will clean easily
because there are no oils to remove.
RINSING THE HAIR
After every shampoo, give the hair a protein rinse. This will give the
hair body and life. It is particularly necessary I areas where the water
is hard. Your manikin has no natural oils to replace those lost in
shampooing. After every two or three shampoos, give the hair a
cream rinse. When combing out the wet hair, if a snarl should occur,
do not attempt to comb. Instead, use the large tooth at the end of the
comb to untangle the snarl.
SETTTING THE HAIR
Wet it in the same way you would set the hair on a human head,
using plain water or waving lotion as you prefer.
DRYING THE HAIR
You may let it dry naturally. Or, you may use a dryer. If you use a
dryer, DO NOT use HOT air. You may use warm air for only five
minutes, then cool air until the hair is dry, Hot air will dry out the
hair and make it brittle, easy to break.
COMBING OUT THE HAIR
Scalp Info Page 17 of 34
ST #5
7.
Comb it as you would the hair on a human head (don’t pick the hair
out with a hair pick). Before brushing ;the hair, apply a non-greasy
dressing to it. This is especially important if you use a nylon brush.
The static electricity that results from brushing dry hair with a nylon
brush causes the hair to “fly” or stand away from the head. A light
dressing will hold the hair together, making it more manageable.
USING HAIR SPRAY
Use hair spray sparingly on manikin, only enough to hold the set.
Any

Hair spray will do, so long as it doesn’t have a lacquer base.
TILTING AND TURNG THE HEAD
Hold head firmly at the base of the neck when you wish to tilt or
turn it as you work. Do not push on the top of the head or the face
when Tilting or turning it. The latter would soon damage or break
the threads, which fasten the head firmly to its swivel holder.
HOW TO LUBRICATE METAL HOLDER
If the swivel holder is too stiff, place a few drops of household oil in
the ball of the ball and socket joint. This will free the ball for easier
movement, but sufficient tension will always remain to hold it firmly
in position. Do not remove screws that fasten down the metal
piece that holds the ball in place. A very heavy steel spring is
seated inside the holder and if you remove the screws you would be
unable to reassemble the holder without special tools.
CLEANING THE MANIKIN FACE
You can clean the face easily with any good household cleaner.
Make sure the cleaner you use specifies that it is for painted
surfaces. Use a very mild solution, bathing the face with a soft cloth.
Blot dry with soft dry cloth.
BLEACHING AND TINTING
If you use your manikin exclusively for practice and training
purposes, we recommend that the hair not be bleached or tinted.
Even the most careful bleaching will weaken any human hair a little.
But if you want to bleach and tint the hair on your manikin to make
it more attractive for display or to make the hair easier to see when
you are working on it, you may do so with little harm if you follow
these directions closely:
a.
Never more than 2 shades lighter.
b.
Use neutral oil bleach.
Scalp Info Page 18 of 34
ST #5
12.
c.
DO NOT USE BOOSTERS OR QUICK BLEACHES.
PERMANENT WAVING
Permanent Waving the hair is never recommended for an AKO
Manikin. It might damage the hair and it would immediately limit
the changes you could make in hair styles. The high quality hair
used on AKO heads is very pliable. easy to mold and curl. It has a
natural tendency to wave. These manikins are excellent for the
practice of permanent wave blocking, wrapping and winding.
There you have it. Actually, the care of your manikin’s hair should follow
the same rules you’d use for your own, or a customer’s. With care, your
AKO manikin will be at your service for a long while. You will find it one
of your most rewarding and most pleasurable working tools.

THEORY OF SHAMPOOING
EFFECTS OF HARD WATER ON SHAMPOOS
SOAP SHAMPOO
A very important factor in shampooing is the softness of the water used to rinse
the shampoo from the hair and scalp.
A feature of modern hairdressing is the demand placed on the town or city water
supply. Each patron requires many gallons of water during the client stay in the salon.
The type of water available would, of course, depend on the particular location of
the salon. In general terms, those towns and cities closest to the sea have the softest
water supply. Those farthest away have the hardest water.
Thus the Mid-West States have the hardest water and areas along the Atlantic and
Pacific sea-board has the softest. The difference in water hardness in the water supply to
these separated areas may be as large as sixty times.
As important as this softness may be, it is often too expensive to treat the large
quantities of water used for shampooing. This difficulty is another reason for soap
shampoos being displaced by soap less shampoos.
The hardness in water supplies is due to certain salts (mainly calcium and
magnesium) dissolved in water as it collects in the watershed areas.
Whenever these salts in hard water come into contact with soap shampoo
molecules, a chemical change takes place. The “head” of the soap molecule is replaced
by calcium or magnesium.
This new molecule formed is no longer soluble in water, thus the soap molecules
are precipitated in the form of thick curd.
Furthermore, the molecules of calcium and magnesium soap are attracted to the
cuticle of hair. There, it results in a greasy, slimy coating of soap scum around the hair
shaft.
Although it has a greasy nature, it is considerably different in property from hair
conditioners or sebum. Greasiness is a physical characteristic of some molecules to roll
easily over one another.
For example, the graphite (carbon) in a pencil is a slippery, greasy substance
itself. In fact, it is often used as a dry lubricant in locks, etc, but graphite hs no chemical
relationship to “grease.”
Certainly, the coating of soap scum around the hair is most undesirable. It is
insoluble in water or shampoo. Thus it is impossible to remove during the usual rinsing.
It remains clinging to the hair as a serious obstacle to further treatment of the fibers for
setting, cold waving, etc.
The dried-out soap scum, in addition, has a depressing effect on the natural sheen
of the hair. It leaves the hair dull, drab and lifeless.
Scalp Info Page 25 of 34
S #50
The water-insoluble molecules of soap scum are split by mild acids to make two
soluble parts. These parts can be simply removed from the hair by more rinsing.
The mild acids restore the sheen to the hair by removing the dulling layer. They
also cause the imbrications to tighten and give the cortex added strength, manageability
and body.
SOAP LESS SHAMPOOS
The performance of soapless shampoo is not hindered by the presence of hard
water. In fact, any type of water, hard or soft, can be used with these shampoos.
Some suppliers actually add hard water salts to their shampoo. The reason being
that soapless shampoos tend to foam better in contact with calcium and magnesium salts.
These suppliers know that many salons judge the shampoo on its foaming ability
alone. So, increased foaming becomes a “gimmick” to help sales. But caution is needed
by the salon, for the increase in foam does not necessarily indicate that the shampoo is a
satisfactory all-round performer.
Although it is true that the calcium or magnesium “head” of a soapless shampoo
will enable these shampoos to work in hard water, it does not mean that hard water is as
good as soft water for shampooing.
Hair can retain relatively large quantities of rinsing water. As this water dries out,
the salts in hard water are left in the cortex and on the cuticle. This gives the hair a harsh
felling, even though it has been previously cleaned.
The salts in hard water react with the “heads” of soapless molecules as they did
with the soap molecules, but in this case the “head” remains soluble in water, Thus they
continue to functions shampoos and are easily removed by rinsing.
(Note that soapless shampoos must NEVER be mixed with soap shampoos. They
are incompatible. The cleansing properties of the soapless shampoo will be seriously
diminished.)
TEST OF HARD WATER REACTION WITH SHAMPOO
A good test to demonstrate hard water problems in shampooing is to take a
sample of diluted soap and soapless shampoos in two different glass containers. (If no
soap shampoo is available a solution of toilet or laundry soap willdo.)
Next, add some artificial hard water. This can be made by adding two or three
teaspoonfuls of calcium and magnesium chlorides (or nitrates) to a pint of water. (These
salts are inexpensive and may be obtained from any druggist or chemical supplier.)
The soap solution or shampoo will react immediately to form thick white curds of
soap scum. If the container is tilted on its side and rotated slowly, a greasy deposit of
soap scum will be left clinging to the glass.
If the contents are then discarded the glass container will be coated with an
opaque, slimy layer. Furthermore, any soap bubbles or foam that were present in the
beginning will collapse if sufficient hard water is added.
Even if the dirty glass is rinsed with tap water it will remain cloudy.
The layer of soap scum cannot be easily removed once it clings to the glass.
Scalp Info Page 26 of 34
S #50
If vinegar or some acid rinse is used it will cut the scum restoring the clarity of
the glass.
This soap scum is, of course, attached more firmly to the rough, scaly cuticle of
hair. In addition, the cuticle scales are swollen by the alkali in soap and so trap further
amounts of scum.
In the case of soapless shampoo no such problems arise. The shampoo continues
to foam and is easily rinsed away even when hard water is added.
(This test can also be used to detect soap shampoos as well as the mild acid test.)
