Quinn, Program Developer, The Conference Board of Canada 9:30 a.m. Plenary Session 2 Round Table Discussion/Q&A Breaking Down the Barriers to an Innovation Culture 8:30 a.m. Plenary Session 1 Introduction and Welcome: Innovation Within and Beyond HR Ian Cullwick and Bruce Good will discuss the Conference Board’s research, and the key barriers to creating and sustaining an innovation culture, followed by Q&A with the audience. Ian R. Cullwick, Vice-President, Leadership and Human Resources Research, The Conference Board of Canada The Conference Board is a leader in innovation research and practices review and assessment. Ian Cullwick will explain why the Conference Board believes innovation is a critical strategic challenge over the next decade, and why HR has a leading role to play. 9:45 a.m. Plenary Session 3 Innovation as a Natural State of Doing Business Karen McKay, Vice-President, Human Resources and Learning and Development, Eli Lilly Canada Inc. Eli Lilly is known for its innovation culture and tradition of collaborating for great ideas. Karen McKay will describe InnoCentive, one of the world’s longest-standing crowdsourcing initiatives, conceived by scientists at Eli Lilly in 1998 and launched in 2001. Its purpose was to encourage outside-the-box thinking, and to structure outsidethe-department collaboration for solving business and R&D challenges. High performance and innovative cultures are the result of very conscious and deliberate leadership choices, enabling strategies that may take years to produce results and that require great effort to protect and sustain. Ian will provide an overview of the core characteristics of a high performance, innovative culture, based on his more than twenty years of management consulting, research, and teaching experience. He will also offer a perspective on different organizational design and human resource strategies and programs. Karen will share Eli Lilly’s innovative approaches to employee engagement, culture, and values, and how “debateable moments” are used to increase confidence that management really does listen. Karen will also explain how catalyst teams and trailblazer projects help break down silos and create innovation leadership. How Leaders Turn the Innovation Vision into a Reality Bruce Good, Executive Director, Centre for Business Innovation, The Conference Board of Canada 10:30 a.m. Tri Fit Energizer and Refreshment Break Most senior leaders recognize that innovation is a primary engine of growth. However, many are unsure how to manage innovation effectively in their own firms. The Conference Board’s Centre for Business Innovation (CBI) recently conducted a major survey of Canadian businesses’ innovation practices and performance, how they manage their innovation strategies, and the cultural and other factors that impact innovation performance. 10:45 a.m. Plenary Session 4 HR as the Driver for Innovation Dr. David S. Weiss, President and Chief Executive Officer, Weiss International Ltd. A decade’s worth of executive surveys on innovation highlight a significant gap between what leaders say they want and what their organizations deliver. To register, visit www.conferenceboard.ca/conf Over 80% of leaders surveyed believe innovation is important for future success, but less than 30% are satisfied with their current level of innovation. This same pattern is found in HR leaders, where 82% believe innovation is important for HR, but it is ranked as priority number 12. To create meaningful, sustained value creation in their organizations, HR leaders must start where the organization is now, and apply courage, capability, and commitment to stand up and take a leading role in driving organizational strategies such as innovation. So why, despite all the talk, have business and HR leaders not given innovation more attention? The short answer is that they haven’t had sustainable, practical, and reliable program options that deliver long-term, predictable results. Instead, there has been an endless array of partial answers, with the result being an alarming innovation gap. Louise Taylor Green is one of the few HR executives with functional accountability for designing and leading the overall organizational strategy. Louise will describe what HR leaders must do to earn credibility and take on that important strategic role, whether it’s for the organization or its HR strategy. David Weiss will examine how HR can take a leadership role in closing the innovation gap, so innovation happens systematically and sustainably. This insightful and entertaining presentation is based on the book David co-authored, Innovative Intelligence: The Art and Practice of Leading Sustainable Innovation in Your Organization. Louise will offer real life examples from Hamilton Health Services, including improvements to losttime injury rates, and an enterprise approach to workforce engagement as a key enabler for strategy implementation. David will focus on the following questions: 1. What is the innovation gap and its root causes? 2. How can HR develop leaders of innovation and a culture of innovation? 3. How can HR reduce barriers and maximize innovations within HR? A round table discussion will follow, giving delegates an opportunity to explore how these ideas can be applied to their organizations. 11:45 a.m. Plenary Session 5 Stop Talking, Start Doing—The Innovation and Courage for HR to Lead Strategy Louise Taylor Green, Executive Vice-President, Corporate Affairs and Strategy, Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation 12:15 p.m. Tri Fit Energizer and Networking Luncheon 1:15 p.m. Plenary Session 6 The New Competitive Advantage—Innovate and Differentiate, and Faster Please! Manny Sousa, Senior Vice-President, Global Human Resources, OpenText Corporation OpenText has grown aggressively, both organically and through acquisitions, during its 20-year history. As it expanded geographically, the complexity of managing a 5,500 person workforce in over 40 countries required that the HR make some changes. Today, HR is a strong strategic partner to line management, well integrated with each line of business, and playing a key role to help the company succeed in a highly competitive marketplace. As OpenText becomes more focused on product differentiation, improving the customer experience, and becoming more responsive to customers and markets, HR is driving a culture to support innovation. Following the economic turmoil of the past five years, companies are finding themselves in increasingly competitive markets. HR must first re-invent and reposition itself to be a credible partner to the business, if it is to contribute fully to organizational performance. PROGRAM 2:00 p.m. Plenary Session 7 Firestarter Roundtables: New Thinking in HR Leadership Selection, Development, and Diversity Beth Wilson, Toronto Managing Partner, Canadian Managing Partner, Community Leadership, KPMG LLP KPMG challenged the assumption that all leaders can be made to be great leaders, if they get the right training and support. Instead, KPMG considered, what would happen if we put people into people leadership roles who are naturally good leaders? KPMG are proud winners of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers for 2012, and are recognized for their commitment to leadership and innovation. Beth Wilson will discuss the KPMG experience, and how to assess the diversity, leadership, and innovation options for your organization. Overhauling Traditional HR Processes Karen Phelan, Consultant, Operating Principals, and Author, Sorry I Broke Your Company Karen Phelan says her mission is to help companies replace onerous human resource practices and systems with better dialogue, better relationships, and better employee job fit. She will challenge our thinking with traditions such as ranking employees for performance appraisal, doing performance appraisals at all, and leadership competency models when you take people like Steve Jobs, Larry Ellison, Meg Whitman, Martha Stewart, and yes, Donald Trump. The presentations will be followed by a group discussion, where delegates can interact and consider how these insights can be applied to their HR functions. 2:45 p.m. Refreshment Break 3:00 p.m. Plenary Session 8 Treating You Like Family: Having an Investment Mindset About People strategic blueprint for the organization, aligning the people strategy to business innovation, viewing people as an investment rather than a cost. Quinn, Program Developer, The Conference Board of Canada 8:30 a.m. Plenary Session 11 Human Resources Trends and Metrics – Original Conference Board Research Results Heidi Martin, Research Associate, Leadership and Human Resources Research, The Conference Board of Canada Ruth Wright, Director, Leadership and Human Resources Research, The Conference Board of Canada As the telecommunications industry has become more intensely competitive, the need for the “right” people and culture strategy has become critical. Resetting the EVO to bring a sharper focus to the talent and culture strategy is fundamental for success. In partnering with the line, HR’s role is critical to set the right tone to attract and retain talent needed to win. 10:00 a.m. Tri Fit Energizer and Refreshment Break 10:15 a.m. Plenary Session 13 Dropping the Performance Appraisal System and Compensation Grid Elizabeth Gates, Director, Global Management Effectiveness and Performance, Adobe Systems HR is now expected to make “evidence-based” decisions that positively affect organizational performance. To support these decisions, HR requires accurate and appropriate metrics to measure and analyze its workforce, and the effectiveness of its talent management strategies. Have we become so enamored with our traditional HR processes that we’re afraid to break what we’ve built? Adobe, like many companies, struggled with its dreaded performance review process for years, until Senior Vice-President, Donna Morris boldly abolished it in 2012. HR must also look within, to measure the efficiency and effectiveness of the HR function itself. But what metrics are Canadian organizations collecting and analyzing, and how are they using this data? Consistent with Adobe’s move to simplified and agile software development, Adobe transformed its review process into a back-to-basics approach of continuous feedback, expectations, and growth and development discussions. Heidi Martin and Ruth Wright will share their research findings, including a review of talent management processes and outcomes, HR functional metrics, and human capital metrics reflecting the value of people to organizations. 9:15 a.m. Plenary Session 12 Compete to Win: How a Focused Employee Value Offering (EVO) Drives Innovation and Success Sandra Pasquini, Director, Talent Acquisition, Rogers Communications Inc. Jim Reid, Senior Vice-President, Human Chief Human Resources Officer, Rogers Communications Inc. Rogers Communications is a diversified communications and media company with approximately 28,000 employees. Four years after Ted Roger’s passing, the company is still committed to Ted’s “the best is yet to come” philosophy, and continues to invest heavily in innovation. Elizabeth Gates led the team that created the new strategy, with Donna Morris and other key stakeholders across the organization. Ellie is also responsible for the frameworks and tools used to build capacity in employees and managers to execute the new approach. Elizabeth will discuss the bold leadership required of the chief HR officer role, and the change management and development strategies Adobe used to change their program. She will also offer lessons learned and practical steps for transforming your process into a leaner and more agile talent management mechanism. Round Table Discussion and Live Action Research Should we maintain performance reviews, or is it time to start over?
