INTRODUCTION
Mini Course Title: United States Civics: Federal Government System
Curriculum Area and Grade: Social Studies 8th Grade
Course Purpose:
The purpose of this course is to understand the Constitution and the Amendments to the Constitution and how they impact the operation of our
country’s government.
Major Learning Goals and Understandings:
Student Learning Expectation(s):
Students will learn the Three Branches of Government and how each branch checks and balances each other.
Students will understand the importance of each Bill of Rights and amendments 11-17

Big Idea and Essential Questions

Big Idea:
The United States Constitution designed a government to guarantee checks and balances between the three federal branches.
The amendments to the Constitution protect the rights of the individuals.

Essential Questions:
How does the U.S. Government create a strong national government in which each of the three federal branches check and balance each
other?
How does the U.S. Government protect the rights of the individuals?
Part 3 – Common Unit Assessments
Student will write either the formal three paragraph essay on the checks and balances of the Constitution or the formal three paragraph essay on the
pros or cons of one of the 27 amendments.
Part 4 – Common/Assured Learning Experiences
Students will become familiar with the three branches of federal government and how they provide checks and balances to the federal government.
Students will have learned how the amendments to the Constitution protect their rights.
