2008/5768 Annual Report A Message From the Chair and the President & CEO JFS: A Pillar of Strength in Uncertain Times T his year was a very exciting and eventful year for Jewish Family Service! It was the culmination of a decade of visionary planning and service to the community. As dark clouds gathered marking an imminent global economic crisis, JFS maintained its position of strength and stability. Our achievements over the past ten years have helped position us to weather the storm. These accomplishments would not have been possible without the steadfast continued support of you, our stakeholders. We marked the fifth anniversary of our move to the Joyce and Kal Zeff Building, which increased our capacity as a service provider and helped transform JFS into a premier community agency. SHALOM Denver celebrated its seventh anniversary at its present location, a move which vastly expanded its work area. The new workspace, coupled with enhancements to SHALOM Denver’s technological capabilities, have enabled it to compete effectively with other business providers. Over the past ten years, the JFS budget doubled from $4 million to over $8 million, yet our efficiency and effectiveness grew more than six-fold. In the past decade, the number of lives we touched increased from 3,500 to a remarkable 21,500, unprecedented in JFS’s 136-year history. This year we launched JFS at Home, a dynamic fee-based homecare agency, that provides 24/7 inhome care to seniors, people discharged from hospitals, and people with chronic illnesses or disabilities. We have become a statewide innovator in many areas, including refugee mental health, Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCs), and school-based counseling. Change has become the buzzword of our times and never before has change been so crucial. This annual report embodies another important change we celebrated this year, shifting to a more dynamic, forward-looking brand. Being more than just a new logo, the brand is defined as the images and ideas that represent Jewish Family Service today, and help us convey to our clients and the community who the agency is and what we do. Our new brand helps us communicate not only our history of service to the community, but our strong, unwavering commitment to being a premier human services provider with cutting-edge programs and services. It conveys the strength of our agency and our commitment to change and to never be complacent about human suffering. The agency’s new tagline is Improving lives. Rebuilding hope. This is our brand promise, capturing our fundamental mission and the empowering role our organization has played for 136 years. It is simple and succinct in conveying what JFS does and the transformative impact our work has and will continue to have on people’s lives. This year’s annual report showcases the new look and feel of our brand, and illustrates how we exemplify the new tagline. You will learn about the agency’s many accomplishments from the past year and how your support helps us positively affect the lives of thousands of families and individuals. You will learn firsthand from our clients and volunteers about how JFS has touched their lives. These good works could not be realized without the help of our dedicated board, staff, donors, volunteers, and community partners. As we all face uncertain economic times, the one certainty is that JFS will be here for you, a friend, or loved one. Thank you so much for your support! B’shalom, Chet Schwartz Board Chair Yana Vishnitsky President & CEO Improving lives. Rebuilding hope. O ur family was making it pretty well until my husband was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago. He has been undergoing special treatments and is slowly recovering, but his medical emergency has devastated our family financially. We did not have enough saved to cover his loss of income. We have spent the last 10 months struggling to pay our bills and keep our house. We learned about the Weinberg Food Pantry at Jewish Family Service and have been using it regularly. The Summer Lunch & Learning program has been especially helpful as we did not have a spare dollar in our budget for the extra food expense for our children being home for lunch during the summer. Our children, who are six and nine, received lunches, books, and school supplies through the program. My husband is recovering, but it will take us many months to pay our back bills and get selfsufficient again. The Lunch & Learning program helped us on a financial as well as an emotional level this summer and we are truly grateful! —“Mary,” 40, Family Safety Net client Family Safety Net T he Family Safety Net program has never been in the spotlight as much as it has been the past year. With need growing throughout the community, this program strives to provide crucial emergency financial assistance and supplemental food and necessities to individuals and families. The Family Safety Net is the last line of defense for people at risk of homelessness, eviction, hunger, and food insecurity. What we have seen the past year is that no one is immune from financial misfortune and we truly serve people from all walks of life who need a helping hand to lift their lives and spirits. As a key participant in Denver’s Road Home: A 10-Year Comprehensive Plan to End Homelessness, the Family Safety Net helps people stabilize and regain control over their lives. Summer Lunch & Learning: Nourishment for the Body and the Mind Summer can be a time of barbecues, swimming pools, and baseball games. It can also be a time of severe stress for families struggling to feed their children who usually receive free or subsidized lunches at school. Summer is also a time when advances in reading levels are lost due to lack of practice or opportunity. The Family Safety Net’s Lunch & Learning program was created to address both of these concerns – to provide assistance to those children at risk of hunger during the summer break from school and to offer easy access to interesting, new books to encourage reading. In 2008, the program provided food and books to 58 children. Every Monday each child received a week’s worth of food and a chance to select a new book. A total of 2,175 lunches were distributed. In addition, all participants attended a celebratory picnic at which new school supplies for the coming year were distributed. The 2008 Summer Lunch & Learning program was generously funded by Venoco, Inc., an independent energy company. JFS FISCAL YEAR 2008 ANNUAL REPORT JFS Counseling Center A t least one out of every four Coloradans is affected by an emotional issue. The JFS Counseling Center has been at the forefront of removing barriers to treatment and making it possible for people to get the help they need. This year, Jewish Family Service’s skilled psychotherapists, social workers, and psychologists helped individuals, couples, and families facing a variety of issues. Our wealth of interdisciplinary expertise and access to the large range of other JFS services helped meet the unique needs of each client. Though much of what we do is not visible due to our commitment to protect the privacy of our clients, what we do has an indelible impact on community life. We do an incredible amount of important work outside the confines of our Counseling Center, as well. Our school-based programs made a profound impact on the lives of students, parents, teachers and staffs at many metro Denver schools. JFS KidSuccess and International KidSuccess counselors helped address the students’ behavioral and academic problems in school. Bilingual and bicultural counselors focused on the unique problems faced by refugee and immigrant students. KidSuccess By operating in the schools, KidSuccess directly supports an educational environment that fosters student-centered achievement, self-esteem, resiliency, Improving Lives and Rebuilding Hope… I personal responsibility, and leadership. With Jewish Family Service’s experience and knowledge of both the educational and health care systems, our therapists worked together with staff and parents in providing a safety net for at-risk students. Students were able to meet with therapists in a safe, confidential, and nonstigmatizing atmosphere; allowing therapists to more readily consult with teachers, school staff, and parents; and making it possible for therapists to immediately respond to emergency situations. International KidSuccess The primary goal of the International Kid Success (IKS) program is to help refugee students with the acculturation process and emotional difficulties that can follow resettlement to the new school and culture. IKS services included group and individual counseling sessions, parent education, teacher and school staff training, and diversity education for mainstream students. Many of these children had been through war traumas, had been deprived of basic human needs such as food, safety, and shelter in their lands of origin, and found themselves in a new and different environment in America. They struggled to fit in and make sense of their new life here. We responded effectively to guide them through their difficult challenges. for our youth. am a refugee from Afghanistan and had been living in the U.S. for about a year when I realized I needed some help dealing with some difficult family issues. Due to serious medical problems, my mother wasn’t able to work any longer. Shortly after that, my father lost his job. All of a sudden I became the primary person dealing with my family’s very bad medical and financial situation. I sought help from the International KidSuccess (IKS) therapist at my school. I told the therapist I was worried about my family’s future in America. I expressed that I was feeling overwhelmed and burdened with many new responsibilities, such as filling out job applications for my father since I am the only one who can speak English in our family. With the help of the IKS therapist, I was able to access community resources that could assist my family, and in turn, I was able to again focus on my school work and achieve success at school. —“Ameen,” 16, International KidSuccess client 3 4 JFS FISCAL YEAR 2008 ANNUAL REPORT Disability Services S ince 1955, SHALOM Denver has provided mailing, packaging, and assembly services to the Denver business community. In addition to its business services, SHALOM provides employment, training, and job placement opportunities to people with disabilities, employment challenges, and those moving from welfare to work. It also offers a host of cost-effective professional and community services to enhance productivity and quality of life for people with disabilities. Jewish Family Service provides caring supervision at its JFS Group Home for eight adults with developmental disabilities. This residential property provides a warm and comfortable home life for the residents where they lead active lives and participate in a variety of social, recreational and cultural activities. Jewish Disabilities Network The Jewish Disabilities Network (JDN) provides services and coordinates resources to promote full participation of Jewish people with disabilities in the Jewish community and the community at large. The JDN is comprised of several Jewish organizations dedicated to addressing the needs of Jewish people with disabilities and their families. It is a collaborative program of Jewish Family Service, its SHALOM Denver work center, Allied Jewish Federation of Colorado, Keshet of the Rockies, and the Robert E. Loup Jewish Community Center. The JDN is made possible through the generosity of individual donors, the Allied Jewish Federation of Colorado, and The Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation. In 2007, the Jewish Disabilities Network hosted a successful Building Bridges Luncheon for local leaders in the disabilities services community. The goal of the event was to help to increase awareness of the needs of those with disabilities, and connect professionals and organizations in the Denver metro area that can help people with disabilities get the care they need. The luncheon resulted in educating participants about JFS Disability Services, the JDN, and some of the issues facing those with disabilities today. The event also motivated and energized attendees to arrange follow-up meetings. A group in the Jewish Disabilities Network enjoys a trip to the Denver Zoo. JFS FISCAL YEAR 2008 ANNUAL REPORT Improving Lives and Rebuilding Hope… for people with disabilities. I am living with cerebral palsy and am confined to a wheelchair. I have lived in a senior assisted living complex since the young age of 42, and have been the only resident in this facility under the age of 62. I lost my dad last year. My elderly mom lives alone and is scheduled to have heart surgery. My twin brother has bipolar disorder. So, at times, despite my own disability, I need to be the “caregiver” in the family. I cannot work and am in great financial difficulty. I learned about Jewish Family Service and the Jewish Disabilities Network (JDN) through my synagogue. When I called, a JDN case manager visited me at my apartment, and she quickly arranged a meeting with JFS’s Safety Net department, which provided me with one month’s rent to help with my expenses. The case manager also arranged for a volunteer to deliver food from the Weinberg Food Pantry to me every month, and found a JFS volunteer to take me to the grocery store. If that wasn’t an incredible amount of help already, the case manager also purchased a booklet of Access-a-Ride tickets for 30 free bus rides. I was thrilled because now I can go to my doctors’ appointments without worrying how to pay for rides, and I’ll be able to visit my mom in the hospital when she has her surgery! I am so grateful for all the help JDN and JFS have provided. It’s helping me feel less isolated and more empowered to be as independent as possible. It was great to receive services from different areas within the agency - Jewish Family Service truly is a single point-ofentry with a multitude of resources! —“Jody,” 54, Jewish Disabilities Network client Just as despair can come to one another only from other human beings, hope, too, can be given to one another only by other human beings. –Elie Wiesel 5 6 JFS FISCAL YEAR 2008 ANNUAL REPORT Improving Lives and Rebuilding Hope… for older adults. A little over three years ago, my wife and I moved to Colorado from Chicago to be closer to our son. We found an apartment at Crestmoor Downs (now called Berkshires at Lowry). A year and a half after moving, my wife passed away. Losing my companion of more than 60 years, I sought out connections. I learned about Colorado Senior Connections (CSC) from a neighbor and attended a grief and loss support group offered through that program. This experience inspired me to become more involved in the program. I immediately identified a common need among residents — rides to medical appointments. Since Colorado Senior Connections is resident-driven, I set out to develop a solution. Using my experience from volunteering for a senior transportation program in Chicago and on Jewish Family Service’s RIDE program (Responsible Individuals Driving Everywhere), Colorado Senior Connections created its own version for Crestmoor Downs’ residents. But, for me, providing an average of two to three rides a week for a fellow resident just wasn’t enough. I found another skill that I could bring to the program — cooking. I discovered that cooking some of my wife’s recipes and being in the kitchen helped me to not only stay busy, but to feel closer to my wife while, at the same time, being able to bring joy to others. Over the past few months, I have made meals for an ill neighbor, provided baked goods for various CSC activities, held a bake sale and donated the money back to the program, and even made a Thanksgiving dinner for Colorado Senior Connections’ Lunch Club that drew a record attendance! I was also available for any other kind of help, including volunteering in the “RUOK” (Are You OK) program where resident volunteers call all CSC members monthly to do a wellness check. Thanks to Colorado Senior Connections, I was able to find a loving, healthy community to be part of after my wife passed away. —“Ben,” 86. Colorado Senior Connections client Growing old is mandatory – growing up is optional. –Chili Davis JFS FISCAL YEAR 2008 ANNUAL REPORT JFS Senior Solutions and Care Connection JFS Senior Solutions FS Senior Solutions, one of our core programs serving generations of Coloradans, remains on the cutting edge of meeting the needs of people as they age. JFS Senior Solutions encompasses a variety of JFS programs and services that meet the needs of older adults. We understand the important demographic that 95% of seniors live in their own homes, so we must bring our services to them, helping them live safely and independently. Services we provided this past year include in-home care, meal delivery, counseling and mediation, transportation services, visitation, personal finance assistance, nursing home information and selection, and information and referrals. We are the lead agency in the pioneering Colorado Senior Connections program, a 21st century answer to caring for our aging population. This trend will only grow as baby boomers age. What sets Colorado Senior Connections apart from other programs? CSC: • Provides a range of coordinated health care, social services, and group activities on site • Draws strength from partnerships that unite housing entities and their residents, health and social service providers, government agencies, and philanthropic organizations • Promotes independence and healthy aging by engaging seniors before a crisis occurs and responding to their changing needs over time • Provides seniors with vital roles in the development and operation of the program (both in governance and volunteer roles) • Fills the gaps (without duplicating) where Medicare, Medicaid, or Older Americans Act services are insufficient or inadequately coordinated Colorado Senior Connections In partnership with the Allied Jewish Federation of Colorado, the Daniels Fund, the Colorado Health Foundation, Rose Medical Center, and the Dominican Sisters, JFS’s Colorado Senior Connections (CSC) program helps seniors continue to live independently in their own residences. This resident-driven program is the state’s only NORC (Naturally Occurring Retirement Community) project, which refers to neighborhoods or building complexes where a large number of the residents are 60 years and older and have aged in place for several decades. This model engages housing complex residents in decision making about the services they wish to receive, by providing a variety of direct services, and by coordinating with other agencies’ services at the site. The program focuses on seniors’ strengths, not their deficits. Because CSC is resident-driven, much emphasis is placed on ensuring that activities planned meet the seniors’ needs and desires. Programs and activities range from health and fitness classes, to gaming groups, to guest speaker events, to a program where residents call each other for monthly wellness checks. Aging in place promotes self-sufficiency, alleviates isolation, reduces health care costs, and allows the elderly to maintain their social networks. JFS Care Connection JFS Care Connection is another important group of programs and services led by a highly skilled staff that strives to restore and enhance the well-being of adults living with physical disabilities or chronic illness. JFS Care Connection carried through this commitment, creating a single point of entry for services, advocacy and support, and offering a wide and thorough continuum of care. In doing so, our clients were safely able to remain in their own homes and subsequently maintained their independence, self-sufficiency, and emotional well-being. J Cathy Grimm, JFS Senior Solutions director, speaks to a group of residents during a Colorado Senior Connections kickoff party. 7 8 JFS FISCAL YEAR 2008 ANNUAL REPORT JFS at Home I n one of our most exciting developments of the year, Jewish Family Service launched a new homecare service, JFS at Home, which is built on the agency’s solid foundation of providing care to generation after generation of older adults. JFS at Home provides non-medical, in-home help, such as personal care, companion services, and housekeeping to anyone who needs extra support at home. JFS at Home is a trustworthy, dedicated resource for specialized care operating 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. JFS at Home provided services for people seeking a completely customized care program on a private-pay basis. Our primary clients included seniors and those living with temporary or permanent medical conditions. The services provided by our qualified, bonded and insured JFS at Home staff members allowed people to maintain their inde- pendence and live safely in their own homes. An added benefit of the service is access to the wide range of JFS programs and services, and tapping into the agency’s extensive knowledge of the community. JFS at Home coordinated care quickly and efficiently, helping clients access almost any additional services that they needed. In addition, JFS at Home proactively addressed all kinds of situations and conditions that may have led to depression and isolation. Our staff worked diligently to keep at-risk clients from spiraling into a declining state of wellness and self-sufficiency. We provided assistance, coordination of additional services, and other resources to clients. Our staff helped address dementia, evaluated housing and transportation needs, and provided other client-focused services. Improving Lives and Rebuilding Hope… for people in need of extra help at home. A s soon as my knee replacement surgery was complete, I realized I was going to need help at home. My surgery was moved up three weeks from the original date, so I was unprepared for all that would happen when I left the hospital. I sat in my hospital room and confided in my close friend that I needed help and didn’t know where to turn. I didn’t want to rely on my friends for help the whole time while I recovered. Fortunately, my friend told me that JFS has a new homecare service called “JFS at Home.” I immediately called JFS at Home and Carla, the director, came to the hospital to learn about my needs. I had a very specific need for help for just a week for a few hours each day. Carla analyzed the situation and made a caregiver match. It was terrific! I have known about JFS and supported it for years, but never thought I would need its services. You never know where life will take you! Since I hadn’t planned to have help after my surgery, I was relieved when JFS at Home provided an easy, comfortable fix, and came through for me when I had no idea where to go for help. I am very picky and I was quite impressed and pleased with the experience. JFS at Home is a fabulous service to offer to the community and I highly recommend it to anyone, whether they need short-term help like I did or need continuous care for a more serious illness. Although I only required a caregiver for a week, JFS continued to help me on a limited basis by driving me to follow-up doctor’s appointments. —“Mary,” 48, JFS at Home client JFS FISCAL YEAR 2008 ANNUAL REPORT Volunteers S ince our founding in 1872, volunteers have been an integral part of Jewish Family Service. They truly are the heart and soul of JFS, and energize the agency with their dedication and incredible service to the community. In 2008, volunteers once again played a critical role in our community outreach. JFS volunteers served in a variety of crucial operations, including Bikur Cholim Para-chaplaincy, New American Support Services, JFS Senior Solutions and Care Connection, Weinberg Food Pantry, Party with a Purpose centerpieces, administrative support, special projects, and boards and committees, as well as providing consulting and other professional services. In fact, 646 community volunteers provided a total of 17,053 hours of service, equivalent to over $332,000 in volunteer time! Volunteers are the backbone of JFS and we could not provide services to more than 21,500 people each year without their invaluable support. Improving Lives and Rebuilding Hope… with the help of one volunteer at a time. M y husband passed away more than four years ago of cancer. In the last year of his life, he had to undergo a lot of chemotherapy. I was working full time and we needed help. I called JFS and they found a wonderful match — a man who made it possible for my husband to remain active and for me to have peace of mind while I was at work. I knew I wanted to give back to the agency. When I called to volunteer two years ago, I was open to a variety of opportunities, but since I was still working, the time commitment of being a Friendly Visitor for about an hour a week best fit my schedule. Initially I only wanted to make a six-month commitment, as I was planning to retire in that timeframe and thought I would travel frequently. However, my positive experience with Gertrude Schreiber, the senior I visit, caused me to continue volunteering indefinitely. Gertrude is such an incredible person. She is almost 91 years old and lost her eyesight just a few years ago. Her mind is still sharp and she’s very easy to talk to. She has become a mother-figure to me and we openly share things about our lives. I truly enjoy and look forward to our time together. And apparently the feeling is mutual because Gertrude says she is very happy to have me around and that she adores me! I live in Parker and try to leave my house early each week so Gertrude and I can be together for as long as possible. I started out visiting with her for one hour each week, but now it’s closer to 2 hours. We have so much to talk about. I have become very close with Gertrude and plan to continue my visits with her for as long as possible. I can’t imagine telling her I won’t be coming anymore. We spend most of our time talking at Allied Jewish Apartments, where Gertrude lives, and like to go outside as much as the weather permits. We often attend a Jewish culture class or current events class held at the apartment complex, as well. Through attending these classes, I have gotten to know many of the residents, which has given me new perspective on the challenges of aging and becoming dependent on others to accomplish daily tasks or to go out and socialize. —Diane Rubinstein, Friendly Visitor volunteer 9 10 JFS FISCAL YEAR 2008 ANNUAL REPORT Once you choose hope, anything’s Donors A special thanks to all of our supporters who supported Jewish Family Service with financial or in-kind contributions which enabled us to care for our community from July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008. This money is being used to expand and improve the current NORC (Naturally Occurring Retirement Community) site at Berkshires at Lowry (formerly Crestmoor Downs). In addition, the funds are designated to support services at two new sites on the west side of Denver — Edgewater Plaza and Sheridan Glen. These apartment buildings are subsidized, low-income high rises, in which the average age of the residents is 73. Both of these buildings are owned and managed by Brothers Redevelopment, Inc., a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide safe, affordable, accessible housing, and housing services for the lowincome, elderly, and disabled of Colorado. JFS is working with Brothers Redevelopment’s management and the residents to provide programs and services which will improve the quality of life for the residents, following the successful model that JFS has established at Berkshires at Lowry. SHALOM Denver opened a new satellite facility, SHALOM Jeffco, located in Lakewood. Through a new contract with Jefferson County Human Services Department’s Colorado Works Career and Family Services, SHALOM Jeffco now offers services to Jefferson County TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) recipients. Since 1997, SHALOM Denver has successfully helped TANF recipients in Denver transition from welfare to work. We are now able to provide the same kind of services to Jeffco residents. SHALOM Jeffco started serving clients in September, 2008 and has the capacity to accommodate 10-12 workers at a time. The goal is to get TANF recipients, generally single moms, off of the funding and into the workforce within three to four months. DHS@JFS: New Collaboration with Denver Human Services The Family Safety Net Program of Jewish Family Service began a new collaboration with Denver Human Services in late 2008. Denver Human Services has a satellite office in the JFS office building every Wednesday and Friday. At this office, Human Services accepts applications for Food Stamps, Medicaid, Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF), Old Age Pension (OAP), Aid to the Needy Disabled (AND) and other human service programs. This satellite office is beneficial to clients who need multiple services and for whom the trip to the main DHS office at 1200 Federal is a difficult undertaking. The world is hugged by the faithful arms of volunteers. –Everett Mámor JFS FISCAL YEAR 2008 ANNUAL REPORT 17 JFS Volunteers T his list includes people who volunteered from July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008.
