We Need Your Help!
Many people have respiratory problems
or suffer from strong sensitivity to strong
scents. In order for SPBC to become a
safe place to worship for everyone, we
are asking that you do not wear
perfume, cologne, after shave or
body sprays, as we attempt to become
SCENT FREE. Thanks for your help in
creating a safe environment for all!
Youth DR Compassion Team
We have a table set up in the foyer with
donation information. Please pray for
our team as they continue to raise funds
and prepare!

STANLEY PARK 101!!
You are all invited to attend the
second week course that will run
immediately after our corporate worship
time TODAY.
The three one-hour sessions will
explore The Commitments We Make,
examining along the way our Church
Covenant, our Statement of Faith, the
importance of baptism and membership,
our expectations of members and much
more!
There will be a time for questions and
interaction in each session. This is a
course that is designed for those who are
new to SPBC, but we would like
EVERYONE to attend so that you can
help us refine the course for future
classes.
REFUGEE RESPONSE!
From The SPBC Library
We have asked you to pray and ask
God how we may respond as a church
to the Refugee Crisis in the world, and
also to the refugee requests from some
of our own church family. Now we are
asking that you come to a meeting that
is intended to help plan our response.
Specifically, we want to know who would
be willing to champion refugee work and
chair a committee that will enable SPBC
to raise funds and sponsor refugees.
We will also be looking for committee
members who will be vitally involved in
fundraising, in completing the necessary
paperwork, and in helping refugee
families settle and acclimatize to their
new home. There will be a meeting
following worship on Sunday, Feb. 21st
at approximately 11:15 a.m. Please
attend if you are interested.

Exploring

CANADA
Many have already felt the effects of the
decline of the Canadian dollar along
with the rising cost of food, but this has
had a devastating impact on the working
poor, those who rely on public
assistance, and food banks – all who
are having to pay higher prices for food
than can be afforded. Please remember
those in your communities in prayer,
and for support to come in this time of
need, particularly for those who rely on
food aid and social support.
The title, Slaves, Women and
Homosexuals,
albeit
somewhat
fascinating, was not the author's idea
(for that, see the sub-title), but came
with the publisher's desire to sell books,
and that it has done. Anyone expecting
something alluring, unless they are
theologically
oriented,
will
be
disappointed.
Bill Webb, one of my colleagues at
Heritage Theological Seminary when I
worked at that institution, served as
Professor of New Testament and was
arguably the best-liked teacher on
College and Seminary Staff (even by
those who considered him a heretic!),
and a man who modelled the Christ-life
for students and neighbours alike.
Today, he teaches both at Tyndale
(Toronto) and Acadia Divinity College
(Wolfville, NS).
In this book, Webb seeks to remedy the
dilemma of the present-day ─ and
especially the postmodern ─ readers
who begin to read the Bible but soon
give up because they find the materials
contained therein to be culturally archaic
and irrelevant. A good example of this
unhappiness is Exodus 21, where
principles of slave management are set
forth for Israelites by Moses. What could
be more archaic than such stuff! We
don't own slaves and haven't done so
since the early 19th century. Even more
disturbing is verse 7: “When a man sells
his daughter as a slave, she will not be
freed at the end of six years as the men
are" (NLT).On the other hand, if we
follow through with a study of slaves in
Scripture, from the Old Testament
through the New, we shall find a
"redemptive
hermeneutic,"
which
reaches its completion in Galatians
3:28: "There is no longer Jew or Gentile,
slave or free, male and female. For you
are all one in Christ Jesus" (NLT). Webb
sees this as evidence of a forward
movement in the liberation of slaves, a
redemptive trajectory which we can
extend into our own day to push for the
liberation of all those who are enslaved,
not only to other human beings, but also
to corporate systems and material
entities.
Does the Bible engage in the same
redemptive hermeneutic in regard to the
acceptance of practicing homosexuals
(as some theologians would claim)?
Webb observes that ancient (GraecoRoman) society as having "mixed
acceptance and no restrictions of
homosexual activity" (40). In contrast,
Scripture in each and every age
condemns such practice throughout as
an abomination (Old Testament), noting
(in the New Testament) that those who
continue in such a lifestyle will not enter
the Kingdom of Heaven. Thus, there is
no
redemptive
movement
for
homosexual practice; it stands
condemned regardless of the era or
society in which it occurs.
Because of the controversy generated
by women in professional ministry
among evangelicals, Webb treats that
subject, as well. He acknowledges that
there are arguments against women in
leadership as well as those in favour.
His conclusion after examining the
biblical evidence is that a redemptive
hermeneutic is present, but he opts for
either a "soft patriarchy" or a full-blown
acceptance of women as pastors.
Many pastors and theologians have
condemned
Webb's
book.
My
experience in dealing with some of
them, was that most had never read it!
There is nothing heretical about it. The
plain fact is that almost every interpreter
of the Bible uses some form of
redemptive hermeneutic. Webb's book
is not for everyone. It is recommended
for those (lay or clergy) who are
advanced students of Scripture.
