AUDITION GUIDELINES
Overview
MHS Musical Theatre directors are excited and delighted that you have decided to audition. We want to see you at your best. Below you will find some
guidelines that will point you in that direction. Most of your questions can be answered here. However, if you have other questions, please do not hesitate to
contact Mr. Blessinger, Mrs. Gradwhol or Mr. Rupp immediately by email.
Preparation
The saying is true that “how you prepare will determine how you perform,” and, in this instance, how you audition. Every musical hosts a wide
array of character types. It is vital that you understand these characters as they have always been presented in order to portray them with the kind
of reverence they deserve and/or present a new viable and substantive interpretation. That requires research and an inquisitive mind.
Open Call Expectations
1. Arrive on time to your audition
2. Be warmed up and ready before you enter the room
3. Be prepared to act, sing and dance in the allotted time
4. Wear appropriate clothing for movement/dancing - NO JEANS (Questions? Ask Mrs. Gradwohl)
5. Arrive 15-minutes prior to your audition time for check-in (Hallway near the Dance Studio)
Audition Materials
Bring the following materials to the audition without which you will not be allowed to audition:
1. First Year Performers: Anyone in their first year of performance at MHS.

Acting
Please prepare a 1-minute monologue of your choosing that demonstrates your ability to create a believable character (physically, emotionally and
intellectually). You will not be considered for a main or supporting role if you do not come prepared for this portion of the audition.
Singing
Please prepare an audition song. An audition song is composed of a 16-32 bar portion of a Broadway song (not from the currently produced
show) that showcases your vocal and character range. Singing is storytelling. Be prepared to express the themes of the song you chose and your
character process. Choose a song that you connect with on an emotional level. You will not be considered for a main or supporting role if you do
not come prepared for this portion of the audition.
Choreography
The link to the choreography audition video can be found on the Maranatha Performing Arts web page. Please review the choreography on the
video in order to be prepared for the audition. You will not be considered for a main or supporting role if you do not come prepared for this
portion of the audition.
1. Mrs. Gradwohl will be hosting an optional one-hour Choreography Review session on the Friday before auditions begin in the Dance
Studio right after school.
Call Back Auditions
These auditions will be held in the Dance Studio. The Call Back audition will help the directors to narrow down the selection of cast members
and see if there is chemistry among the performers. It is not an indication of casting, nor is it an omission from casting. Should you be asked to
attend a Call Back audition, please prepare the following:
1. Acting: Scene selection given from Current Production script
2. Singing: Song selection given from Current Production score
3. Dancing: Choreography will be repeated possibly with accompanying song sung
