CELEBRATING OUR 6TH ANNIVERSARY
2009 – 2015
We are honored you could join us today as we celebrate the sixth anniversary of
the USF Chapter of the National Academy of Inventors with our seventh annual
luncheon.
At our inaugural luncheon in 2009, we inducted 131 members into what was
then called the “USF Academy of Inventors.” Out of that group grew the National
Academy of Inventors. Today, the USF Chapter is the largest chapter of the NAI
and boasts 332 members who collectively hold nearly 1,900 patents. It is truly
remarkable to see how far we have come.
USF continues to be recognized as a major global research university that exemplifies a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. The underlying component
that drives research initiatives is the talent of our faculty, staff and students like
you. In every corner of the university great scientists, scholars and educators are
translating inventions to become significant factors in economic development
for Tampa Bay and the state of Florida. USF is ranked 10th in the nation among
universities for U.S. patents, according to the most recent Intellectual Property
Owners/NAI rankings and has been ranked in the top 15 universities worldwide
for the past five years. The university also broke records with 110 U.S. patents issued; over 100 new licenses and options executed, and 10 new startup companies.
This is only possible because of your innovative research that you are converting
into patents and commercialization activities to benefit society.
For FY2014, USF was awarded a record-breaking $428.3 million in contracts and
grants, a nearly $15 million increase over the previous year, and ranks 43rd in the
nation among all universities for research expenditures, according to the National
Science Foundation. It is an honor to be here today as we recognize and celebrate
the USF innovators whose dedication to the advancement of knowledge and its
translation to the market brings these successes to life.
This year, USF Inventors Commons was established in the USF Research Park
to honor the members of the USF Chapter of the National Academy of Inventors. Located on the north side of the Interdisciplinary Research Building (IDR),
between the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame “Walk of Fame” and the FLEX, the Inventors Commons walkway features a brick for each chapter member, with larger
pavers honoring members of the National Academies and other high honors and
awards. Inventors Commons was made possible, in part, by the generous support
of the Sanberg family, the Chacour family and the Florida High Tech Corridor
Council.
Our chapter has had an active year. In February our members again served as
preliminary judges for the USF Young Innovator Competition. Chapter members
also served as preliminary judges for the Cade Museum Prize, the State of Florida
Healthcare Innovation Competition, and the Pinellas County School Invention
Convention. As part of Hillsborough County’s Economic Development Innovation Initiative (EDi2) the chapter, along with USF CONNECT and the Florida
High Tech Corridor Council, was a sponsor and participant in the Tampa Bay
Gulf Coast MakerCon. In conjunction with USF Technology Transfer Office
(TTO), the chapter convened our fourth workshop in our continuing Tampa Bay
Alliance series entitled “Training in Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (2TIE)” with our fifth workshop scheduled for October 28, 2015. With the
TTO, our chapter hosted and co-sponsored six additional educational seminars
and we kept our members informed of workshops and educational programs presented by USF CONNECT on entrepreneurship and innovation, along with other
news of interest and importance. Finally, the University of South Florida has been
named an I-Corps™ Site by the National Science Foundation (NSF), becoming the
second site in Florida and one of only three dozen institutions around the country
to earn the designation. The local chapter of the NAI is actively involved in this
effort as investigators, mentors, and in promoting the initiative.
We continue to work closely with the national leadership of the NAI and participated in the NAI conference this past March, held at the California Institute of
Technology in Pasadena. The 5th Annual Conference of the NAI will be held on
April 14 and 15, 2016, and will return to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
in Alexandria, Va. We hope you will be able to join your colleagues from NAI
member institutions worldwide for two stimulating days of speakers and panels,
networking, and the induction of the 2015 Fellows.
Technology and Innovation, the quarterly journal of the NAI, is in its sixth year
and continues to grow. A number of our USF chapter members have provided
articles for the journal and your manuscripts are invited for submission. Your
membership in the chapter includes an annual subscription to the journal, courtesy of USF Research & Innovation and the Florida High Tech Corridor Council
sponsorships.
We applaud the efforts of all our inventors and thank you for your continued
support in honoring academic invention as the USF Chapter of the NAI moves
forward to what promises to be an exciting future.

T
he National Academy of Inventors® (NAI) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit member
organization comprising U.S. and international universities and governmental
and non-profit research institute, with over 3,000 individual inventor members
and Fellows spanning more than 200 institutions, and growing rapidly. It was
founded at the University of South Florida in 2010 to recognize and encourage
inventors with patents issued from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, enhance
the visibility of academic technology and innovation, encourage the disclosure of
intellectual property, educate and mentor innovative students, and translate the
inventions of its members to benefit society.
NAI Fellows
As of March 2015, 414 exceptional innovators from across the country and around
the world have been inducted as NAI Fellows for their contributions to innovation
through impactful research, invention and innovation. These notable academic
inventors represent more than 150 prestigious universities and governmental and
non-profit research institutions. Collectively, the Fellows hold nearly 14,000 issued
U.S. patents.
With the induction of the 2014 class, there are now 61 presidents and senior leadership of research universities and non-profit research institutes, 212 members of
the other National Academies (NAS, NAE, NAM), 22 inductees of the National
Inventors Hall of Fame, 16 recipients of the U.S. National Medal of Technology and
Innovation, 10 recipients of the U.S. National Medal of Science, 21 Nobel Laureates,
11 Lemelson-MIT prize recipients, 112 AAAS Fellows, and 62 IEEE Fellows,
among other awards and distinctions.
Fourteen elected NAI Fellows are affiliated with the University of South Florida.
