yprus may be pressured into considering alternatives to a federation if current UN talks fail to
achieve results by early next year. The idea of a
velvet divorce is starting to gain traction as the international scene begins to lose interest and optimism.
Touting a different kind of devolution for Cyprus
is political heresy, but another failure to reunify the
island could bring about the unthinkable.
Some actors appear to be asking how Greek
Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots would profit
from a complicated deal, like the one currently
being discussed, which will make reunification difficult
to implement. “Why not negotiate partition instead,”
it has been suggested.
The Cyprus Weekly understands the idea of a divorce has been expressed by players from abroad.
But sources close to the talks told us President Anastasiades does not consider anything less than a
workable federal state.
Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci is also
on the same page, although time for their kind of
deal may be running out. >4
