Our Principal Writes - Nord Anglia Education

Our Principal Writes
“One day you will ask me which is more important? My life or yours? I will say mine and you will walk
away not knowing that you are my life.”
Kahlil Gibran
Given as our students have just been hugely successful in the international poetry recital competition
at Novy Porg, I thought it perhaps appropriate to use a little poetry for this week. The quotation above is
from the Christian Lebanese poet Khalil Gibran, who although most will not have heard of him, is the third
best-selling poet of all time. His words I am sure will resonate with parents especially and speak of the
capacity of love we are all capable of. It perhaps also reminds us that this needs to be articulated with our
loved ones as often as we can, as loving and being loved so deeply must surely be one of the most
fundamentally important things we experience in this life.
Thank you for your support as ever.

We are now well and truly into the run up for Christmas and it is busy busy busy! Last weekend saw us host
the Nord Anglia U18 Sports tournament which was a huge success and I would like to thank everybody
involved in the planning and executing of that event as it was a lot of hard work. My thanks goes to the PE
department, the cleaners, the parents, the staff and the students. Our boys and girls teams competed with
determination and showed great sportsmanship over the two days. Both teams came fourth in volleyball
so a big congratulations to the students as this is certainly an improvement on last year and for a school of
pour size we are really not that far behind the rest.
On Wednesday we were very privileged to
be visited by two Juilliard alumni who held
small concerts throughout the day with
year groups from Years 3 to 13. Avery Waite
played the cello and Kim Mai Nguyen
played the viola. They treated us to a
variety of pieces from Afghanistan, the
United States and the Caribbean. It was a
wonderful experience for the students who
also got to ask questions about the
instruments, Juilliard and their lives as
travelling artists.
Also on Wednesday four of our students from Years 10 and 13 took part in an international poetry recital
competition in Prague. Ksenia in Year 13 came in third place and Tomas in Year 10 came second so
congratulations to both of these students and to the others that took part.
This week two of our Year 13 students have attended interviews at the prestigious University of Cambridge
in the UK. They should be hearing from the university in January so I would like to wish them the very best
of luck. Our fingers are crossed.
Next week is our famous 24 hour bikeathon starting on Thursday 17th December. If you have not signed up
already, then please do so at the winter market or by contacting me. All of the money raised will go
towards the school’s Tanzania charity. Thank you in advance for your continued support.
We also have Years 11 and 13 parents’ evening on Tuesday at 4.30pm and all year groups will be receiving
reports by the end of next week.
My final note is to wish everybody a wonderful and restful winter break and I look forward to seeing you all
again in January.
Best wishes,

Early Years News
On Thursday the Early Years children performed The Smallest Angel for parents, families and friends. They
were fantastic and really tried hard to remember their lines and to sing loudly.
Based on the traditional Christmas Nativity, The Smallest Angel is a story about a group of angels who are
searching different countries to find the perfect place for Jesus to be born. On their journey they visit
America, Scotland, Switzerland and China. The smallest angel is told she is much too small and the job is
too important for her, so she is not allowed to go. Guess who ends up finding the perfect place…?
For some of the children it was the first time they had performed in front of an audience. The Pre-Nursery
children were Swiss, the Nursery children were Native Americans, Shepherds and Three Wise Men, and the
Reception children were Angels, Scots, Chinese, Mary and Joseph. After the performance we all enjoyed hot
chocolate and cakes in the school canteen. A great big thank you goes to everyone involved, especially all
my Early Years colleagues and Miss Donaldson for the hard work which went into making this performance
possible. Merry Christmas Everyone!
Also big thank you to Lucia En for the beautiful photos! They can be seen

Charities
On Monday afternoon I visited Nové Strašecí Orphanage, which is one
of our whole school charities this year. They are located about 40km
west of Prague. I met with the director, the staff and the children that
live there. There are about 23 children ranging in age from 2-18 years
old. They live in three family groups and each family has access to a
living room and a kitchen. All of the children seemed very happy there.
The orphanage itself looks well-run but they need our help to build a
playground for their younger children and with securing educational
courses for the older students, as well as some desperately needed
help with costs of psychologists. Some of the students still have parents but they have been taken away
from their families due to problems with drugs or alcohol. I really think the money we raise will be put to
good use and have a great effect on the lives of these children. Thank you in advance for your generous
support with the school charities.
EISP Students Show their Skills.
This Wednesday, a team of students from EISP was involved in a poetry recital competition for English
speaking schools in Prague. The competition was held at Novy Porg School and sponsored by the British
Council.
Students learnt two poems by heart and were judged on their accuracy, speech and dramatic presence. The
standard was incredibly high and all competitors were rigorously grilled about the meaning of their poems
and the reasons why they chose them.
Our students rose to the challenge and
gave impressive performances,
demonstrating an ability to memorise
difficult poetry and explain the ideas of
the poems in a mature and profound way.
The final scores saw Tomas McKee being
awarded second prize and Ksenia
Marchenko achieving third.
We now look forward to getting involved
in more recital competitions organised by
the British Council next year.
Years 11 and 13 Parents’ Evening
Dear Parents/Guardians,
On Tuesday 15th December, we have a parents’ evening for
students in Years 11 and 13. The focus of the evening will be to
find out how your child is progressing in individual subjects and
what areas they need to work on for their upcoming exams.
Students are expected to attend the evening along with their
parents.
The event will take place in the Gym and will start at 16:30 and continue until 19:00. Your child will be given
a schedule in school and will be expected to talk to each of their teachers to arrange appointments for the
evening. Appointments will be for either 5 or 10 minutes.
The Careers Advisor will also be present at the evening so please feel free to talk to her if you need any
information regarding university choices and future careers. An appointment is not necessary.
Please ensure your child has the appointment schedule and make a record of any appointments made in
case they lose their appointment sheet.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child’s tutor or their Key Stage Coordinator.
We look forward to seeing you on the evening.
Best wishes,
Caroline Troughton
Assistant Principal and Head of Secondary School
We are very sorry to inform you that due to the Parents` Evening for Y11 & 13 the FLOORBALL club will be
cancelled next Tuesday. Thank you for understanding.
The Tanzania Bikeathon 2015
Dear Parents, Teachers, and Students,
This academic year there will be a trip to Tanzania happening from 20th – 28th January 2016 involving fifteen
students from Years 10 and 12.
On the 17th December the students involved are holding a 24 hour bikeathon starting at 2pm and finishing
at the same time the following day. To complete the full 24 hours, we as a community will have to
continuously bike in shifts of 30 minutes on exercise bikes placed in the main reception.
The aim of this activity is to raise as much money as possible in sponsorship/donations to support our
school charity Seeway Tanzania and to allow the fifteen students to partake in some of the following
projects:


Work within a local Tanzanian school and orphanage. Jobs will include general landscaping,
maintenance of classrooms, ceiling repair and developing the library.
Work in the community which will involve building goat sheds and supplying goats and hopefully
installing smokeless stoves into houses.
What we need from you as a school community is the following:


Volunteers to participate in completing 30 minute slots on the exercise bikes. This can be staff, students
or parents (Everybody participating needs to either obtain sponsorship or make a donation).
Sponsorship for participants in the biking sessions if you do not wish to cycle.
We are aiming to raise as much money as possible by completing this activity. If you are willing to help in
anyway please contact Miss Troughton directly on [email protected] or sign up in the main
reception.
On behalf of Seeway Tanzania, thank you.
Kindest Regards
The Tanzania 2016 students

Coffee Morning this week
Thank you to our Dutch families for a great Coffee Morning this week! Whoever didn’t
try “oliebollen”, missed out!
What a wonderful week of music we have had.
On Wednesday we had the most fantastic visit from Juilliard alumni, Avery Waite and Kim Mai
Nguyen, a cello and viola duo who performed music they discovered from teaching music around the
world. As part of our Nord Anglia-Juilliard arts programme, Juilliard organised this visit from 2 of their
alumni, experienced in not only performance but also music education.
The concerts began with beautiful melodies from Afghanistan then a mixture of American folk music and
some Jamaican melodies as well. These all combined unusual performing techniques and background
history that the performers shared. Students from Years 3 - 13 were able to share this experience as well as
chat with the performers themselves.
A truly inspirational visit to open our musical minds even further.

Thursday saw two fantastic performances by our younger students. Our Early Years gave a very polished
performance of The Smallest Angel, all speaking clearly and singing beautifully, accompanied by our
very own Happy Birthday Ensemble.
This was followed by another great performance from Key Stage 1 of their Pirates musical. Excellent
acting and fantastic singing. A joy for us all to watch and a high level for our Key Stage 2 performance to
match next week!
Congratulations to all our performers for their dedication and enthusiasm in not only the performances but
also the rehearsals.
This afternoon, our Key Stage 2 choir will be launching the Christmas market with a selection of Christmas
songs. We hope that you all enjoy this performance and the market which follows.
Next week in the music department:
KS2 performance of Dragons the musical
Please reserve your Thursday 17th December for this performance in the theatre at 14.30.
Senior school Music Competition
