We have a great chapter because of people like you who will work hard to make the Chapter grow and be successful (meaning let’s ride and have fun!) On another note...We have already started getting ready for the 2016 VA State Rally which is in Lynchburg and we would like to have an OUTSTANDING showing this year. The hotels should be opening up soon for reservations for the rally. As soon as I get the Information I will pass it on to you so check your E-mail often. Also, we need everyone that is going to the rally to preregister when it opens as well. I hear this rally is going to be a doozy and if you don’t go, boy, are you going to miss something fabulous. Rallies in the past have been fun but I think this one is going to be even better. Let’s show the other Chapters what Hampton Roads HOG Chapter is all about and get pre-registered! I would be remiss if I didn’t remind everyone to be sure to wear proper gear for the colder temperatures and be extra watchful of other drivers who sometimes get a little crazy during the holidays. Ladies of Harley have organized 17 events for Toys for Tots. I'd like to share a little history of how all of this began. . . Millie Handle was one of the first HOG Members at Hampton Roads. She has held every position within the Chapter that we have. Millie started our LOH back in 1998 or 1999, we still weren't sure which year the last time we discussed this. Anyway, Wanda Hale, another Lady of Harley, who came to the Chapter way back when has also had many different positions within our Chapter. Well, she started our Toys for Tots campaigning with the USMC back in 1998, I believe, because this is our 17th year of doing this. So, throughout each year we raise money by having bake sales, grilling Hog Dogs and Biker Burgers at the dealership open houses. We have silent auctions, raffles, and you name it, we have done it and if we haven’t done and it’s a good idea then we will do it! Then, during the last few weeks of October a shopping night is scheduled, dinner is first of course, and in our US Marine Corps T-Shirts and Hoodies we invade a local toy store, the last two years it has been Wal-Mart in Yorktown, and we commence to filling our carts to flowing over with toys for girls and boys of all ages. The toys are purchased from all the fund raising. It is so much fun for all of us to buy these toys for kids who otherwise would not have a very merry Christmas. Once the toys are all purchased we haul the out to a truck or trailer provided by one of our HOG members and load them up and keep them safe until the Big Day! As the year draws to an end, we have this HUGE event to raise more money and to collect more toys (this is the Big Day!). The Toys for Tots bike event has always been on the first Sunday in November and it has always been an escorted ride, except for a few years back when we could not have an escorted ride and the LOH had no choice but to do a poker run and such. An escorted ride is a pretty safe ride. This is the way to go because the police block the intersections so we ride through all the lights without stopping and they also prevent anyone from the adjacent lane from entering our column of bikes. The privilege to ride with us means each participant will donate one toy. With all of those toys we need something to haul them in so the Marines load up two 5-ton trucks. Then, after a ride brief and a prayer and in a staggered formation we roar down the city streets making our way through Yorktown and Newport News and back to Yorktown. There are people along the route waiting for us to ride by and with a toot on the horn and a parade-like wave we ride for the kids. It is an awesome event and demonstrates our commitment to the children at Christmas. And….it’s not over yet, as if by magic more money is raised and we get to go shopping again! We highly encourage you to make it a point to participate in this annual event. You can ride your own bike or ride with someone else, it doesn't matter! What matters is all of us working together for the kids and having fun and riding our Harleys!! Corrina Bunch, HR H.O.G. Let me start off by saying Carl Laycock was our road captain and he did a great job. This was our, Rick’s and mine, first trip to Skyline with the HOG chapter and lots of known and new friends were along for the trip. We had a few delays at the start of the trip but nothing major to speak of. Once on the road we had a fairly nice ride. We stopped for lunch in Fredericksburg and that is where things started to get a bit interesting. Once we hit the road we somehow lost our sweep!! They could not reach him on COM and they tried for a good 30-45 minutes. We headed out again and our sweep knew our next stop was Waugh Harley in Orange so we knew we would meet up there. Shortly after we hit the road again we ran into a backup of about 4 miles long! While in the back up of traffic a voice comes over the COM system “Carl, Carl are you there? Carl can you hear me?" Holy heck it is our sweep! Apparently he got ahead of us and we have no idea how he did it. He tells us where he is and that he will meet us at Waugh. As we approach the end of the back up who do we see sitting on the side of the road cooling down but our sweep! Well ok, his bike had cooled down and he hopped in behind us to continue our ride to Orange VA. Our visit to the Harley store was a great time to stretch our legs and prepare for the rest of our ride. We left Orange and headed out . It was a bit later than normal but with delays here and backups there it was understandable and everyone was in good spirits. We hit route 211 and headed for some twisties. I was not on my bike and this would be a first for Rick and I on such a road so I calmly told him I would not be talking and to just go for it. It was an interesting experience especially on the switchback. Once the road settled out Rick asked how I was doing and I let him know I was fine and that I trusted him implicitly. He chuckled and said that was my next question... Yes, Rick, I would not be on the back of this bike if I didn't trust you! We gassed up and headed to Front Royal to check into our hotel and head for a very pleasant dinner with the group. On Saturday morning we all got up and had a relaxing breakfast at the hotel and headed north up to Winchester Harley for a little shopping. After our excursion we headed south to a great little restaurant at Brookside Inn for lunch. We got some group photos in before we headed up the mountain to Skyline Drive. While we are in line.....it was quite busy, Carl comes over the COM to tell us take the skyline to the right, north towards Front Royal. We pass it along to folks around us that do not have COM and we proceed to do just that. A couple of miles up the road Linda Laycock is flagging us in as we each show up so we can continue as a group. However, we have lost two bikes.....they went left and south instead of right and north. Linda proceeds to try and get a hold of our sweep, who is one of the culprits, calling the wife's cell phone. Our wait was actually not that long and here comes our riders. One of our riders has now been nicknamed "North". I will not tell you who "North" is, I will let you figure it out on your own. Once we were all together we headed out as a group, funny thing was we had many people taking pictures and videos of our group! Our first stop was to take a group picture, the weather was just amazing. Clear, sunny with just a slight coolness in the air. Perfect picture day so Justin Gardner and I went across the road to take group photos, our chapter lined up along the rock wall and on top of the rock wall. (continued on next page) HR HOG EVENT LINE: (757) 872-0955 HR HOG WEBSITE: http://www.hrhogchapter.com Volume 28, Issue 11 November 2015 Hampton Roads HOG Chapter #5300 Yorktown VA Our Sponsor: Hampton Roads Harley Davidson As Justin and I were taking pictures a ruckus occurs and neither Justin or I knew what had happened just that the rock wall had gotten loose. Ha! The wall had broken away under Nelson Rogers feet and he fell back. Thankfully there was about 10 feet of sloping ground before a 50-60 foot drop!!! Someone, I wish I could remember who, likened Nelson to a cat. Another said Nelson made them think of Wolverine of x-men fame. All I can say after seeing the amount of wall that fell away is someone was indeed watching over Nelson that day. After we all laughed in relief we got ourselves together and had an uneventful ride through the rest of the Skyline. It was truly an unforgettable day with our chapter. We all got back safely to our hotel and had about an hour and a half to relax before we headed to dinner. Well, I found a coffee shop called Daily Grind that was about 2 blocks away. I know most of you are thinking ok big deal. For those that know me, most times you would think there was an IV attached to me with Starbucks Latte in it! This is now day 2 of no decent coffee!!! So Rick, Justin and I head over and have the best latte I have ever had! Oh thank you for putting this place here, all is now right in my world. Later, we all meet on our bikes and head to a great little pizza shop for dinner called “Melting Pot Pizza.” Thank you, Tracy Spencer, for getting this place set up for our group, pizza was terrific and the company even better. The views that day were beyond beautiful and we all had such a good time. Once we all got back to our hotel to stay for the evening we got out of our riding clothes to relax for the night. Most of us met up just behind the main office right near the pool to sit down and enjoy the rest of our night chatting and such. One of the hotel staff was nice enough to offer up the banquet hall to us so we would get out of the chilly night air. We headed up and proceeded to enjoy our evening. I have to say I don't think I have laughed so much for so long in my life. Tracy told me his ribs were hurting from laughing so much. It really was a fun and silly evening. Sunday morning we woke up to a bit of rain so we decided to just relax and have breakfast at the hotel. We took our time and got ourselves ready to head home and to give the rain time to dissipate. I've had fun darn it. I don't want to go home. I want to stay and have more fun with these very diverse and fun people, but not this time. As we got closer to home bikes start to turn off for their homes. Rick and I are headed to Smithfield so see each one as they head home safely. I cannot wait until next year's ride to do this again. Thank you to Carl Laycock for being our Road Captain, Tracy Spencer for Wing and Frank Heise for Sweep! And to every rider from our HOG chapter that went that weekend thank you for an amazing and fun trip!! Cheryl Dobkins, HR H.O.G. Riding in support of our freedom! The Second Amendment! A firestorm of a topic these days and will be for generations to come! The liberals say banning guns will put an end to gun related crime! Conservatives say that banning guns only means the criminals are the only ones to have them! Our president and congressional democrats are working to get rid of them and leave us defenseless. Congressional republicans and the NRA fight back to keep the Second Amendment alive! Just the fact that I scheduled and put this ride together should tell you which side of the fence I’m on! I originally scheduled it for September but mother nature had her own ideas about it and hit Richmond, our end destination, hard with rain. We don’t often rescheduled rides but I really wanted to get this one in so I put it down on October’s calendar determined to fit it into a very busy month! I had set the ride up with Dominion Shooting Range in Richmond. Not a fancy place, as a matter fact, quite run down and not in the greatest of neighborhoods but they had 19 lanes, plenty of guns to rent for any liberals wanting to come out of the conservative closet, and the price wasn’t too bad although we were required to buy their ammo! It was kickstands up at 9am for a basic five and dime ride! Leave the dealer, take 17 to 105, right onto 143, exit onto 199 and straight to John Tyler aka route 5! The temp was pretty cool that morning with most of us in leathers. Route 5 has a lot of shaded areas and it made for a brisk morning ride to Highway 10! We took a lengthy break at the Sunoco Station on 10. The shooting range had informed us they had a 30 man college frat get together at 10 and asked me to delay our arrival a little to get them out before we arrived. We headed out on highway 10 through Chester and Chesterfield until we got to Jessup Road. We took a right and rode a short distance through a residential area until a sharp right turn put us on Turner Road and close to the range. To get into the range parking lot we had to ride through an old used car lot dodging pot holes and junk cars (remember the neighborhood? My kind of place!!) We parked, got signed in and started shooting. I had a new gun I was dying to try out! 150 rounds, three dead paper targets, and a sore wrist and I was ready to go! I was the last one out and the others were ready for lunch. As we headed out of the parking lot and turned left onto Turner there was a gas station filled with police cars and crime scene tap! While we were in the shooting range they had a little shooting of their own! While a gentleman was washing his car another “individual” decided to jump into his car and drive away with it. Unfortunately the poor soul picked an off duty police officer to steal from and the officer shot him! No word on his condition or the future status of the officer involved!! A couple miles down the road we stopped at Mi Hacienda for lunch! Good Mexican food if you are ever in the area! After lunch we headed home through downtown Richmond and onto I-64 for a speedy ride home. We arrived back at the HRHD around 3:30 to find Scootin America in full swing and some of our HOG brethren cooking burgers and dogs! Of course we had to partake since our director Carl had the spatula in his hand in A true McDonald’s burger flipping fashion!! Sorry you had to cook Carl, you missed a great ride but now you have a start on a second career (kidding)! I plan to make the 2nd Amendment ride an annual event! Hopefully next year the weather will cooperate and we can have it in September! We will try to change up the locations each year and do some indoor shooting as well as outdoor. I highly encourage everyone to join us whether you own a gun or not! We ride responsibly and we shoot responsibly! For all you anti gun closet conservatives out there, come out and see what the second amendment is about! We would love to have you! There was something special about this particular Saturday though, employee, customers, and H.O.G. members were buzzing about an exciting visitor that was in route to HRHD, Adam Sandoval and his dog Scooter, with Scootin’ America. Adam, a former Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter and promoter, and his dog Scooter began their journey across America last year to visit every Harley-Davidson dealership in the lower 48 states to raise money for the American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fun. The fund is designed to give scholarships to children whose parents lost their lives while serving in the United States military. “I was introduced to the American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund because I used to hang out at my local post fairly often,” said Adam. “There is not enough out there for supporting the military in general but there is more support for the wounded soldiers than there is for the families who make big sacrifice as well. I don’t think there is enough support out there for when a father/husband or mother/wife leaves to serve in the military and this is an area that I felt needed some attention.” Adam trained MMA for 14 years, currently owns five gyms and exclusive contracts with seven different casinos. He was one of the prime consultants of writing the rules and regulations of athleticism in three different states, so when it comes to MMA, Adam has done it all. Since marketing and promotions is a huge part of MMA he took that particular set of skills and put them into place to help others. Adam said, “I needed a change in my life and this is what I came up, I had a lot of regrets for never serving in the military. I wanted to give back to my community and I wanted to do something fun with it as well! I love the motorcycle community and I wanted to find a way to serve both and this is what I came up with..." Scootin’ America was originally scheduled to take one year, but now the year is up and there are still over 300 dealerships left to visit. Scootin’ America’s stop at HRHD makes the 396th dealership on the road. With 44,000 miles logged Scootin’ America has broken two world records, the longest charity ride and the longest single motorcycle trip in a single country. After visiting first 396 dealerships Adam has raised more than $120,000 for these kids. With 300 more to go it will take him another year to fulfill his commitment to these kids. “This event would not have been as successful as it was without the help of our HRHD staff" said Darlene Raiford, “Not only did we have everyone on board at the dealership but local businesses that are tied to HRHD wanted to show their support as well. Quaker Steak & Lube, Tom McGrath Motorcycle Law Firm, Thunder Roads Magazine, 757Recruit, the local American Legion Chapters, and Combat Vets Motorcycle Association all were active participants of Scootin’ America’s 3-day visit. Not only were they active participants, but they all donated to Scootin’ America as well.” HR HOG EVENT LINE: (757) 872-0955 HR HOG WEBSITE: http://www.hrhogchapter.com Volume 28, Issue 11 November 2015 Hampton Roads HOG Chapter #5300 Yorktown, VA Our Sponsor: Hampton Roads Harley Davidson “My family is very proud of me and very supportive of me. It is difficult to be away from family and away during holidays, and that is one of the biggest things that I have learned is the fact that, prior to this trip, I was a business man. I was more concerned about that next dollar and I saw the holidays as an excuse to not work. That is the way I looked at life. Now that I have spent Christmas, Easter, birthdays and Thanksgivings alone I have a new appreciation for that family time. I cannot wait to be able to go home and have a loved one and family to cherish those moments together in a way I have never had before. It put things into perspective for me. That perspective is what helps me get through the hard times, because as hard as this trip has been for me I know that there are service members out there who are going through the same thing that I am but they are getting shot at, or they are worried about taking the next step because there might be a mine there or they are worried about a little kid with candy having a bomb attached to them. I take pictures with kids all the time and I never worry about whether or not they might be carrying a bomb. I think about that a lot and it helps me get through the hard and the lonely times,” said Adam. “I have slept on the side of the road. I finally broke down a couple months ago and bought a tent because the bugs were so bad,” said Adam “On the other hand, though, I am lucky because people take me into their homes and some people donate hotel rooms. HRHD donated a hotel room for two days which is wonderful to not have to unpack and repack the bike for almost two whole days which has become quite the tedious task, it was nice to take a break from it.” As Adam and Scooter’s travels continue the awareness of their adventure continues to grow more and more with every stop they make. Adam and Scooter continued the last leg of their adventure that weekend as they headed out Monday morning bound for their visit to SSHD. A large group was waiting outside of SSHD cheering as the group of a dozen riders arrived. As always, Adam and Scooter took time to talk and take pictures with everyone in the crowd. Adam and Scooter, along with everyone in the crowd, were invited to enjoy hamburgers and hot dogs personally grilled by SSHD’s General Manager, Steve Benoit. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end and the time had come for Adam and Scooter to leave. But first Darlene, on behalf of HRHD and SSHD, presented Adam with $1,824.40 for the American Legion Scholarship Fund. This figure did not include the proceeds from the Dine to Donate event at Quaker Steak & Lube the previous day. The total from that event was $335.29 for a total of 2159.69 raised during the visit to HRHD and SSHD. It was then time to say good-bye and the group watched as Adam rode off to tackle the next leg of his journey. Then, he was gone, but many of us will always remember his visit and time with us. He gave us the chance to do the right thing and support the families of our men and women who fell in the line of duty. His visit touched us all and made us remember that freedom isn’t free. The men and women and their families of our military, both active and retired, pay that price every day, some of which have paid the ultimate price. "If you did not serve in your military find the time to serve those who did. Less than 1% of Americans have served in the military yet everyone reaps the benefits,” said Adam. “So, if you are looking for an excuse to get out and live your dreams and have that adventure of touring the country on two wheels then this is it!"
