Overview for Volunteers
Seaton Jurassic is an inspiring and ambitious project with a bold vision. A high quality visitor attraction in
the middle of Seaton, it will encourage more visitors to the area, revitalising the local economy. Inspired
by the unique natural heritage of East Devon, the visitor centre uses an iconic design, immersive
interpretation and strong links to the wider landscape to tell the uniquely powerful story of the geology
and marine ecology of the Jurassic Coast - England’s first Natural World Heritage Site. The project will
also provide enhanced access to the South West Coast Path, the stunning Axe Estuary Wetlands, the
dramatic Undercliff National Nature Reserve as well as the beach and rockpools on the foreshore.
Working with a number of partners, Seaton Jurassic
aims to ensure more people can connect with, enjoy,
understand, value and take steps to protect the natural
heritage of Seaton. Seaton Jurassic will be the
physical base for this, a place of learning and
discovery. As well as hosting a world-class
interpretation centre and forming the focal point for a
range of events and activities, it will co-ordinate a
range of formal and informal education opportunities
for schools and families. In particular, we aim to
nurture a constantly developing connection between
people and the wonderful natural heritage of Seaton
and the surrounding Jurassic Coast World Heritage
Site.
Seaton Jurassic will be open for Easter!
Volunteers will be central to its success, building a bridge the community and infecting visitors with their
enthusiasm. Right now we are particularly looking for volunteers who are not afraid to make a fool of
themselves! People who will have a go, throw themselves into character, and engage visitors to the
Centre in character and in costume and with puppets! They will have the option to then take the story
out into the local community through the medium of marionettes! Training is provided.
To begin with we will have the following volunteer roles:
•
Welcome and Retail Volunteers
•
Not Just a Room Guide – costumed characters and marionettists
•
Education volunteers
•
Event volunteers
•
Gardening volunteers
And in time we hope to develop a whole host of opportunities, from attending or organising bioblitzes
and beach cleans, to running Wildlife Watch Clubs or an aural history project, and designing or leading
guided walks -or other ideas that might grow in response to the skills and interests of our volunteers.
