Week Of School
A few schedule changes will be in place the last
week of school. There will be no hot lunch on
Wednesday, May 25th as we will be having the
school picnic on Friday, and Chapel will be
held on Friday, May 25th instead of Wednesday. On Friday, the students may leave after
the picnic lunch at noon.
Last Day of School and School Picnic
The last day of school and end of
year school picnic will be held at
school on May 27th at noon. The
families of the school children are
invited to attend as well as our
many wonderful volunteers who
help us serve the children here at Zion. The
cost for the picnic will be $3.00 for the school
children only -- everyone else is free. Please
RSVP to the school office by May 20th.
Thank you, and if you have any questions,
please feel free to contact the school office at
367-3617.

This enjoyable event is for children in grades K8. Teams are made up of all ages of children,
and the teams compete against each other in
various track events. Please remember to wear
tennis shoes and comfortable clothes for this
fun event. Everyone is welcome to come and
watch!

Vacation Bible School
Kindergarten News
“God’s Great Rescue” is the name of this year’s
Vacation Bible School. This fun week-long event
will be held July 11th - 15th from 9:00 a.m. 11:30 a.m. and is open to children three years of
age up to those entering the sixth grade. We are
asking for a $15.00 per child donation for teaching materials. Please return the registration form
to the school office. If you would like to help with this year’s
VBS, please feel free to contact the school office.
The children will hear that God wants us to share his Word
with unbelievers. A young servant girl helped Captain
Naaman by telling how he could be healed of leprosy by the
almighty God of the Israelites (9A). God wanted Jonah to
share God's Word with the people of Nineveh (9B). "God our
Savior . . . wants all men to be saved" (I Timothy 2:3-4).
Make Your Camping Reservations Today!
The 2016 LGP Sponsored Zion Family Camp
-out is scheduled for June 17th-19th at NagaWaukee County Park (group campsite #4)
and is open to all Zion members. Whether
you camp with us for the whole weekend or
just visit us for a part of it, just $8 per person covers reservation fees, camp-fire wood, and a 5:00 p.m. Saturday evening
meal. In case of rain, this meal will be moved to the Zion
cafeteria and gym. Please also note — Naga-Waukee Park
now charges a $4 per vehicle per day fee (to those who do
not have an annual park sticker). The Saturday morning
family activity will be a nature walk led by retired park ranger
and Zion member, Bruce Stichmann. The walk will begin at
the campsite at 9:00 a.m. and will run about 1 ½ hours. For
more information or to RSVP, please contact Sarah Hahm
([email protected] or 262-369-0614).
Track Uniforms
All washed track shirts should be turned in by Friday, May
20th. Please remember not to machine-dry these uniform
shirts. Thank you!
3K/4K News
This week our Christ Light lessons will be “A Young Girl
helps Naaman” and “Jonah”.
Next week is the last week of school. Please bring a swimsuit and towel, so that we can play in the water if the weather permits.
Letter Z is the last letter for this school year!
The stage is up! This Thursday, May 19th is Entertainment
night! We will be performing the play called “Caps for Sale”.
We will turn the children into monkeys. (That’s easy!) I have
monkey hats and ask that the children wear brown for the
play. We will also serve a dinner, and it's a fun evening for
the entire family! Please invite family and friends to share
this great night!
The last day of school and the big school picnic is Friday,
May 27th. Please come at 11:45 a.m. and join us for lunch
that day.
We will be singing a special song for the 8th grade graduation on Sunday, May 29th, at 10:30 a.m. I hope that you can
all join us.
Recently, the 5K students studied the letter
Vv. The kindergartners heard how Golly, the
Superkids' pet dog, cut his leg when he
stepped on a piece of glass. They read how a
vet helped Golly at the pet hospital. On Tuesday, May 17th, Dr. Tom Gilligan from the
North Lake Vet Clinic will visit the children in 4K - 4th
grade. Dr. Gilligan has served as a vet in our area since
1988. You can read more about him and the clinic
at www.northlakevet.com.
It's almost showtime! The children in 3K - 5K had their last
rehearsal together today. On Wednesday, they will perform Caps For Sale for the children in grades 1 - 8. The children who come to school on Thursday will watch the older
children perform that morning. We are eager to entertain you
Thursday night! We hope to see you then.
Please remember that the 5K students will be involved in the
track and field events scheduled for this Friday afternoon at
school. They have been assigned to teams led by eighth
grade students. The children should wear comfortable clothes
and running shoes (no sandals or flip flops) that day. Come
cheer them on as they participate.
1st & 2nd Grade News
Word of God
Theme: Boldly tell unbelievers about God and his judgment
on sin.
Lessons and truths:
The Three Men in the Fiery Furnace (11A) Mon. and Tues.
Daniel and Belshazzar (11B) Wed. and Thurs.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stood out in the crowd
when they refused to worship the golden idol. They confessed
their faith in the true God. God wants us to show our faith by
saying no to those who ask us to sin and by telling them
about God. When telling the king the meaning of the mysterious words that a hand wrote on the wall, Daniel told Belshazzar that God would punish him for his sin by taking his kingdom away. God may also call upon us to tell others about
their sins. We pray that God would give us the strength to
speak his Word bravely.
Math The first graders will be working on addition facts. Our
focus this week will be the doubles and doubles plus one
facts (5+6, 4+5, ...). The second graders will continue to study
fractions of a group of objects. After that, they will explore
equivalent fractions.
Science The grass seeds we planted last week have
begun to germinate. We will use the grass to investi-
Page 3
gate what plants need to thrive. A few of the mung bean
seeds are beginning to germinate as well.
Reading/Phonics This week we will be working with the
sound of “aw” and “au.” As you read with your children,
point out words that have these special vowel patterns.
Field Trip The permission slip for our final field trip is in
your child’s Leave At Home folder. Please fill it out and
return it to school by this Friday.
Entertainment Night We will be busy this week putting
the finishing touches on “It’s Saturday!” If your child has
not yet brought a sleeping bag (or blanket), please be sure
that it is here tomorrow. We will need to practice with the
the sleeping bags. As stated in the note you got last week,
pajamas need to be here on Wednesday. After the second
song, they will need to change into play clothes - something they’d wear on a Saturday. They could just wear this
outfit when they come for Entertainment Night. Then they
would simply change into their pajamas before the performance and back into their other outfit during the performance. They do not need to bring a special “play clothes”
outfit for the performance or the dress rehearsal on Thursday.
3rd & 4th Grade News
If you haven't turned in the permission slips, please do so
ASAP. Thanks!
Students may bring their pajamas, pillow, and
sleeping bags to school for the musical. They
will also need to wear a solid colored t-shirt
and either shorts or jeans.
Excitement
mounts!
Christ Light stories this week are "Namaan is Brought to
Faith" and "Jonah." Memory treasures are 1 Tim. 2:3,4
(due Tuesday) and Matthew 28:19 (due Friday). "Hark the
Voice of Jesus Crying" verse 1 is due NEXT Thursday.
Have a great week!
5th & 6th Grade News
Welcome to the last two weeks! Our preparations for Entertainment Night will continue this week, and the kids are
doing a great job. Thursday night will once again be a fun
evening for all the Zion families.
We're getting lots of things done in the classroom, as well.
5th grade has finished its Math book and is
now reviewing with tests from throughout the
year. The 6th grade book has a number of
extra lessons, so Logan is still learning new
material. We're also reviewing the diagramming concepts
we've already learned in Grammar. The one book that we
won't finish this year is History, although we've made it
past page 800! We will have a couple of big History sessions to see how far we can get since we're finishing up a
number of other subjects.
Zion Lutheran School
Thanks to the parents who accompanied us on our biking field
trip and the Wisco track meet last week. We had a great time at
both!
7th & 8th Grade News
Welcome to one of the busiest weeks of the school year! Entertainment Night dress rehearsal is scheduled for Thursday
morning and final performances are that evening. We are looking forward to entertaining you with our play. Parents, thanks
for helping with costumes again this year.
Friday morning the students in grades 5-8 will take down the
stage and get everything put away. Then the Zion Track meet
will be held Friday afternoon. All the students in
Kindergarten through 8th grade have been placed
on one of four teams lead by our eighth grade students. If you have the opportunity, please join us for
a great afternoon of fun and competition.
We are having classes this week also! We corrected our last
regular Math lesson today, so we have a few topics to cover
from the back of the book along with the final tests to be taken
next week. We finished our Science chapter on the respiratory
system and the excretory system today and will start our last
chapter on control and coordination. We will also take a Geography test tomorrow on Atlantic South America before starting
our last chapter on Pacific South America. We have a few lessons left in Grammar on diagramming before taking our final
test next week.
May God bless our final two weeks together!
